The relation between CGPA, Gender and

    Annual Household Income.

    Introduction

The comparison of CGPA between males and

females has always been a topic of discussion.

Also, the relation s between the annual

household income and students CGPA is an

issue that educated parents want to know to

be aware of what type of environment they

can provide for their children. Hence, these

important intellectual and social issues are

addressed and here with necessary hypothesis

and supporting statements. Also presented are

the facts about the surveyed population group

    and information.

    Methodology

The 2005, fall class of Q.A. II (TR 11:00 am)were surveyed. The survey was taken of the

whole class on a paper and pencil basis. The

received data were tabulated and arranged

revealing their age, gender, annual family

house hold incomes, major, satisfaction in

    studies and other information. The

informative data about the sample like, age,

gender, annual family house hold income and

major were arranged, and the final results

about the sample composition was presented

in the form of percentages with appropriate

statistical diagrams. After the informative data

about the sample, the two major hypotheses

    were stated, which are

    a) Is there a relationship between gender and

    CGPA?

    b) Is there a positive or negative relation

between annual house hold income and

    CGPA?

These two hypotheses were tested by various

descriptive statistical tools and tests. Then the

final results were presented with tables,

    statistical diagrams, and necessary

    explanations.

    Data Analysis about the Sample

included from age 19 to 43. The mean age

however was 24.29 and the median was 21.

    III.Annual Household Income

The annual house hold income varied from

    $5000 to $150,000.

    RESULTS ON HYPOTHESIS TESTING

    1.Relationship between CGPA and Income

There are hypotheses whether the higher

annual household incomes lead to betterment

in a students CGPA. The probable reason can

be like, since a student does not have to work

too hard and earn money, he might be able to

concentrate in his studies and score high

CGPA, and thus income affects CGPA.

    Correlation Coefficient (r) -0.305

    t- value -1.6

    Coefficient of Determination .0933

The table states that the CGPA and income are

inversely related where, 9% of the variance in

the CGPA is affected by income. This is

not a strong inverse relation because there

can be a lot of other aspects like students

own motivation, family support, and others.

Also the relation that the CGPA and the

Income could only be verified a significance

level of 0.20. The number of samples

appeared to be low due to the unavailability

of adequate information. Hence it can be

feebly said that there is a little inverse relation

between CGPA and the annual household

    income.

    2. Relationship between CGPA and Gender

This is another of the talked about social

issue. Some rumors tell that girls are more

intelligent than other while the others say the

vice- versa. It might be that females are more

careful in studies compared to males because

males are usually distracted by a lot of things

    around.

    Mean CGPA 3.24 2.85

    Standard Deviation GPA 0.57 0.54

    Median GPA 3.224 2.72

The above table illustrates that the CGPA of

females is higher than that of males. The

mean CGPA of females is 3.24, where as that

    of males is 2.85.

This hypothesis can be proved by t-test that

the average CGPA of females is more than

that of males under significance level of 0.05.

    CONCLUSION

Hence, after the analysis and the performed

tests, it can be concluded that there is a

    negative relation between annual household

income and CGPA, and females score higher

    CGPA than the males do.
