The design of the D-series brings
together the very best in power
and drivetrain technology and
efficient, innovative design.
This is not an overnight phenomenon.
It has evolved through four generations
of strong reliable trucks. Trucks built
on the vision of combining the best of
the best in components and design,
creates lasting value.
...begins with an ultra-modern engine. The Mercedes Benz OM501LA is atechnological masterpiece.
With 4 valve technology, electronically managed unit injectorsand ultra high (8000 bar) injection pressures, theD-series’ power plant achieves low specific fuel consumptionand emissions. In a design that’s clean enough to meeteven future emission legislation. In addition it delivers powerat a lower rpm further conserving fuel. Clean burning fuelefficient technology at its best and Mercedes Benz achievesthis in a power density package some 38% better than theclosest competitor.
Through Allison's proprietary world series transmissiontechnology, which achieves 6 ideally spaced speeds withone less planetary gear set, the D-series gets more powerto the ground. Smoothly. Fuel savings from an efficientdrivetrain are maximized by Bell Equipment's innovativeweight-saving design focus.
From the low overhang front end to the ribbed load body, extensive use of high strength steel and composite materials, the D-series carries less dead weight. More Payload. TheD-series’ payload to weight ratio advantage deliversmore tonnes per unit of fuel used.
While the B40D’s newgeneration engine features amodest increase in power, thebeauty of this new technologyis 308 kW, available at just1 800 rpm. With 2 000 Nmtorque developed at a low1 080 rpm. The B35D’s powerhas increased 13% to 283 kWwith 1 824 Nm of torque.
This broad usable power band, coupledwith an improved power to weight ratio, delivers a remarkable performanceadvantage. Evenly spaced ratio stepsand uninterrupted power flow duringshifts help maximize this advantage.
At the other end of the cycle, superiorretarding and braking capacity is alsokey to greater productivity. The B40D’snew oil cooled multi disc brakes reducestopping distances by 20%, areunaffected by environmental conditionsand can go up to 10 000 hours betweenservices.
For wear, free speedcontrol down gradients, andin fact, for all rapid decelerationthroughout the cycle, the B40Dhas highly effective engine andtransmission retarding systems.
The transmission has an output typeretarder which is most effective at highvehicle speeds. Precisely when itsneeded. At the same time in retardingmode, the transmission is programmedto downshift, maximizing engine rpm,and the effect of the quiet yet powerfulMercedes Benz Engine Valve Brake
system (EVB). Together these systemsprovide as much as 830 kW of retardingpower for unsurpassed down haulproductivity.
The B35D features new ventilated drydisc brakes. Eight heavy duty calipersensure dependable stopping power.
Quick acceleration, fast haul speed, rapidbraking, 20% faster dumpcycle and an extra half tonnepayload. With the D-series the solutionfor more production is not more trucks.Just more truck.
Happy operators make happyoperations. There're a lot of ideasout there on how modern workstations should be designed. Bellengineers used the best of themand built the new D-series cabinin first class style.
A pleasing ergonomic layout, responsiveeffortless controls, improved vision out,a more powerful climate control systemand a few extras turn the cockpit intothe ‘corner office’. Like remote adjustedrear view mirrors. Lots of handy storagespace including a compartment thatuses the HVAC system to provide a cooldrink in summer or warm a meal inwinter.
With quieter cabin sound levels of76 db the D-series’ operator can notonly concentrate on productivity, he canmeasure it. The monitor display unitshows recorded cycle data, fuel usageand all-important operating conditions. If desired, available integrated on boardscales will keep precise tally ofproduction. At the same time theD-series’ controls are simple andfoolproof. Traction control is activatedby just 2 switches. The touchpadtransmission controller is fully protectedagainst accidental misselection.
In the D-series even new operators pickup production quickly. All this and thesmooth ride from the nitrogen over oilstrut suspension system make themthe operators truck in everyrespect.
...more component protection - payback time for technology.
Engineering advances have cut serviceand maintenance needs on the D-series. Innovative design providesquick access to all systems andcomponents. Easy to work onfeatures, appreciated by servicepersonnel.
Because prevention is better thancure, protection provided by fullauthority electronic control is along term benefit built into the D-series. The electronic controllersof the engine and the transmissionare networked by CANbus to thechassis control unit. Carefulattention to the finer details, robustconnectors, protected harnessesand secure restraints ensure lifelongreliability.
Maximum protection againstmalfunctions is built in. Should anoperating parameter go out of range, the controller reduces power or limitsshifts as appropriate to preventdamage. As this operating condition isstored by the ECM, retrieving information to pinpoint problems is as simple as pushing a button.
With the D-series pay back from technology givespeace of mind.
...and absolutely the lowest costper tonne
Many factors contribute to the D-series’unsurpassed long term economics.
For a start the Mercedes Benz powerplant is engineered with a B10/servicelife some 50% greater than itspredecessor. Up to 20 000 hours to firstmajor overhaul.
Because all major components aremanufactured in volume Bell truck usersare not held captive to exotic componentsor astronomical parts prices. Bell truckscontinue to produce cost effectivelybeyond traditional economic life.
From the first day on the job the D-serieswill deliver extra production economicallywith a long life ahead. The bottom line-absolutely the lowest cost pertonne in the business.
