    FINALASSIGNMENT [MGTS402]

It was a sunny Friday, I needed to go home earlier, and I dont want to keep

anyone waiting for me as well. But as a hell, it was so called my last lecture of

Bachelors level. Indeed I was covered by weird kind of feelings around. I felt

like Ive lost myself something like Im not myself. I was so nervous when I

was a freshman and now they called me frustrated senior. May be Ive not

made any progress till now. Or maybe itsbecause Ive lost my appetite once

again. Anyway, it was a talk show plus a farewell speech about HAPPINESS

by our Arun Sir. I hadnt attended my Bachelors very first class but thought Iam not going to leave this time.

I was late to enter the mini auditorium, our classmate Shilpa had already

started giving her presentation. And next was Mr. Kedar Bhakta Mathema.

He came up with his mantras that he learnt during his career. The most

notable was to be full in love with the work - if you are working dontbe half

in love with your work, be full in love with your work. If you are half in lovewith your work, then this is not the place for you. This was what he did in Tri

Chandra College as a lecturer. He was 100 % madly in love with his work.

Also he added whoever be the client may be it will Bill gates or any junior not

to discriminate them but to be nice to them. Be sincere in serving them. Being

a high profile lecturer he could have just ignore the hard way to deliver his

lectures but he was sincere in teaching students. And he really feels proud

when he sees his student have become ambassadors, senior surgeons, UN

    officials etc.

After he left Tri Chandra College he was asked to come to College of Education.

But it was different than Tri Chandra College. It was more like teachers

training college and students they were elder than him. Grey haired, fierce

looking headmasters from Pyuthan, Palpa supervisors from Rupandhehi ,

Biratnagar. There he was not to teach literature but English as a second

language, phonetics. He was not familiar with all these. So he had nothing

except working very hard to persist in that new environment. After five years

    there he became the HOD.

At the time when he became the Campus chief at Tribhuvan University he had

to face the student rival activity and encounter the police action. The following

day he released a press statement along with his colleagues after which he

was threatened to submit names of all his colleagues participating on that

action. But rather that to please the boss he chosen to please the inner

conscience as a penalty he was fired.

Then he stayed at home until when a British friend and counselor came to

him and offered him a position at World Bank. But the things that he learntfrom college of education that if you really belong to the place or you really

want to belong to that place, you need to decide that. If not then get out. If yes

you need to work very hard to learn culture, art, and after this you will be

noticed by people and after notice you earn respect and then you learn to be a

leader. These things were what kept him at World Bank.

Similarly the things that he learnt from World Bank from the very first day

were What it was meant to be professional. He says that professional was

not about position, it is about the behavior i.e. hard work, being on time, andquality work.

After 2046 B.S. movement, there was a phone call for him from Baluwatar or

Prime Minister he was still working at World Bank. The phone call hinted a

possibility of a position as Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University. Prime

Minister Koirala was a man of few words he said. Mathema told him that he

would accept the position on some conditions. The first one was that he would

not be a flag bearer of any political party and the second that there would beno government intervene. Accepting this job he was moving from a highly

paid job to a low paid job.

He said that the position of Vice Chancellor was the lowest paid and the

toughest job. But he was determined to show the world that public sector can

perform. When approached by people who asked for a position in University

cabinet, he told them that he would appoint everyone on his own discretion.

While working as VC he had two credentials: first, the reputation as rebel

campus chief who stood against panchayat system, and the second that he left

more paid job to come here. No public institution in Nepal had shown reform

as Tribhuvan University during his stewardship. But later after the

government changed, he had to lose his position as VC. Then he got the

opportunity to serve as ambassador to various countries. Of all the jobs he had

done he says that being the VC was the toughest and the most enjoyed job of

    all.

There was round of applause after his session, he has taught some valuable

lessons no doubt. And for myself, I thought I have done right decision. My eyes

were watering listening to him. I started committing to myself that whateverIll do Ill give a 100% but who knows how long that commitment will persist.

Session again followed by Arun Sirs presentation on the topic HAPPINESS.

And he was really happy to have us as his students. And it was a great honor

to be tutored Management course by such a legend. Lastly, Ill always

remember Kathmandu University, my friends, and every moments that Ive

lived here. Surely these inspirational sessions will help me rise again and

again whenever Ill be falling down.
