Volume 3, No. 4 – April 2014 Reflections from ‘The Rev’ Almost Living vs. Fully Living It was mid-day. It was downtown. It was a city in the Northeast. A woman was standing at an intersection of two busy streets. She was waiting for the traffic light to turn green so that she could walk across the four-lane street in the white-painted crosswalk. While the woman waited on the corner sidewalk, she noticed a teenage girl—about seventeen years old—on the opposite side of the street. The young girl was also waiting for the green light. What attracted the woman’s attention to the girl was the reality that the girl was deeply upset. She was sobbing. Uncontrollably. Just then, the traffic light changed from red to green. The woman continued her gaze on the teenage girl as the two of them approached each other in the white-painted crosswalk. Everything in the woman wanted to reach out to the girl, to touch her, to ask her how she might help her. The woman came within ten feet…then six feet…then two feet of the girl. The woman slowed her steps. Then she passed by the weeping girl. The woman continued walking in the painted crosswalk until she reached the other side of the street. The woman never spoke a word. Almost Living vs. Fully Living

It was mid-day. Reflections from ‘The Rev’ (Continued from Page 1)

For the remainder of that day, the woman was haunted by the look of pain etched onto the girl’s face. The woman was more intensely shaken by the reality that she…did…nothing. Twenty-three years after the incident in the white-painted crosswalk, the woman still remembers that she almost did something. But only…almost.

* * * * * Everyone dies. But not everyone lives. Many settle for almost…living. Many of us have many opportunities to say a kind word, to do a good deed, to give to a worthy cause. But we stop short. We almost say. We almost do. We almost give. We almost…live. This month, April, we celebrate the definitive event of our faith: Easter. The singular experience of Easter represents the fullness of God’s human Son, Jesus. Jesus did not “almost” love. Jesus fully loved. Jesus did not “almost” suffer. Jesus fully suffered. Jesus did not “almost” live. Jesus fully lived. As seekers and followers of Jesus, we are called to live in the same manner: To move from almost...to fully. Jesus himself described one of his life purposes: I came that you may have life, and have it fully. (John 10:10) This fullness is measured by quality, rather than by quantity. By the quality of goodness, of kindness and of generosity. You are invited to witness the fullness of Jesus’ life by participating in the holy services on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. You are invited to contribute the fullness of Jesus’ life by participating in the Sunday ministries of greeting, reading scripture, ushering, serving Communion, providing refreshments and providing elements for Communion (bread and juice). You are invited to share in the fullness of Jesus’ life by participating in the simple campaign to eliminate our church’s heating bill debt. (See opposite page.) You are invited to imitate the fullness of Jesus’ life by fully living. To move from almost attending, almost doing and almost giving to being fully present, being fully active and being fully supportive.

Reflections from ‘The ‘Rev’ (Continued from Page 2)

What happens if we choose “almost…living”? The 18th Century philosopher Edmund Burke once observed: “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.” In this season when we celebrate the fullness of the life of our Savior, may each of us choose—not “almost…living”—but fully living. Beside you in the journey of faith, Rev. BarbaraRev. BarbaraRev. BarbaraRev. Barbara

March 30, 2014 Dear members and friends of The United Church of Warsaw: Greetings of spring to you! With you, we rejoice in more sunshine and less snow. And with you, we are feeling and calculating the effect of our winter of historical extremes. As with residents throughout Western New York and the Northeast, The United Church of Warsaw sustained significantly higher heating bills throughout the months of November and December, 2013, and in January, February and March, 2014. While we, as a faith community, estimated wisely and budgeted “in faith,” we find that the collective heating costs of this not-yet-finished winter will exceed the church’s heating expense budget amount by $7500. You could say that we have amassed an unexpected $7500 Snowman of a heating bill! We need your help in “melting” this unexpected expense. Thus, The United Church of Warsaw invites you to participate in our “Melt the $7500 Snowman” Campaign. Rather than use a thermometer to show a rising amount of contributions, we will eliminate the snowballs used to make the Snowman. If ever your spirit has been warmed by the spirit and/or the people at The United Church of Warsaw, we ask for your help in this very specific need. In making donations to the “Melt the Snowman” Campaign, please issue checks to “United Church of Warsaw” and note “Snowman” in the memo line of your check. As pastor of The United Church of Warsaw, I have begun the “Melt the Snowman” Campaign with a personal $150 donation. Will you please join me in our “Melt the $7500 Snowman” Campaign? Faithfully beside you in the journey, Rev. Barbara

New Member/Inquirer Class on April 27:

Want to Know More about The United Church?

Do you want to learn why and how The United Church of Warsaw became “United”? Do you want to learn about the history of The United Church and about the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) and the United Church of Christ (UCC)? Do you want to know the difference between the “South Church” and the “North Church”? Do you want to take a “tourist’s tour” of The United Church…including an opportunity to ring the bell in the tower of the North Church? Are you interested in becoming a member of The United Church of Warsaw but wonder what church membership may mean? If your answer is “Yes” to any of these five questions, then please join Rev. Barbara for a New

Member/Inquirer Class on Sunday, April 27, at 11:30 a.m. in the Pastor’s Office. The informal but informative class (approximately one hour) will allow participants to receive information about The United Church of Warsaw as well as to ask questions about the church’s past and present. Now that spring has officially “sprung,” this New Member/Inquirer Class is rescheduled from the end of January…when severe winter weather made class attendance “challenging.” If you are interested in attending the New Member/Inquirer Class, please contact Rev. Barbara at the Church Office (585-786-3868) or by email at [email protected]. Come! Learn more about The United Church of Warsaw! Be a part of the growing life of The United Church!

Jennifer Fisher: New Director of Chancel Bell Ringers Beginning April 1, we welcome Jennifer Fisher as the new Director of the Chancel Bell Ringers at The United Church of Warsaw. Jen is the daughter of Nora and Royce Fisher, long-time members of The United Church. She graduated from Warsaw Central School in 2002 and then has earned multiple graduate degrees and post-graduate designations. Currently, Jen holds seven teaching certifications (i.e., Elementary; Elementary Special Education; Secondary Level in History; Secondary Level in Special Education; Literacy Education for Birth through Age 6; Literacy Education for Grades 5 through 12; and, Educational Technology). Importantly, Jen has played handbells for nineteen years and has attended more than a dozen handbell choir conferences and festivals. Currently, Jen lives in Jamestown, NY, where she is employed by Falconer Central School as their Educational Technology Specialist. Moreover, Jen directs the middle school play productions, serves as Technical Director/Stage Manager of the high school musicals and assists the Chain Crew for the school’s football team. We warmly welcome Jennifer as Director of our Chancel Bell Ringers!

F.A.C.E. Group: Lively and Full of Life

In Psalm 103, the psalmist speaks to his own soul: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all God’s benefits— who satisfies you with good

as long as you live, so that your youth

is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 103:2, 3 and 5 The United Church of Warsaw is blessed to have many “youthful eagles” who bring vigor and vitality to our worship, fellowship, outreach and activities. The F.A.C.E. Group (i.e., the Faith And Caring Encounter Group) continues to be lively and full of life within our faith community. On Communion Sunday, March 2, one F.A.C.E. Group member served Holy Communion. During the distribution of the sacrament, Joe Fisher held the glass chalice containing grape juice. In our Reformed Faith tradition, the chalice symbolizes the Cup of Salvation. Later in the month, the youth gathered for Sunday worship in the chapel and then gathered for Pajama Party and Movies in Fellowship Hall. The youth even received pastoral permission to wear pajamas to church that Sunday! (The pastor herself changed into pajamas immediately following Sunday worship.) Look for the presence and participation of the F.A.C.E. Group in April as they set up, serve up, clean up and, of course, eat up at the annual Sunday School Brunch on April 6. Likewise, F.A.C.E. Group members will add their energy and enthusiasm to the Rummage Sale on April 24, 25 and 26. The youth and Rev. Barbara (who plans, promotes and organizes most of the youth events) thank the friends and members of The United Church who generously support and encourage the F.A.C.E. Group and their activities. The youth of today are the church of tomorrow.

Holy Week remembers and honors the journey that Jesus takes from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Between these two Sundays, Jesus— offers the Last Supper, is betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane,

is let down—three times—by Simon Peter, is denounced by the same people whom he taught and fed and healed, is nailed to a cross, and is buried in a tomb. Join with your family of faith at The United Church of Warsaw and the faith communities within Warsaw in these holy services that remember and honor the fullness of Jesus’ life, suffering, death and resurrection: Palm Sunday – April 13 – 10 a.m. in the sanctuary

Maundy Thursday – April 17 – 7 p.m. in Miller Chapel with the Reformed

Catholic Church congregation

Good Friday – April 18 – 12 noon at The United Church of Warsaw;

“The Walk of the Cross” begins in the sanctuary

and concludes at the United Methodist Church

Easter Sunday – April 20 – 10 a.m. in the sanctuary

May you be touched and moved and blessed by the holiness of Holy Week.

Annual Report for 2013 The Annual Report of The United Church of Warsaw (UCW) for calendar year 2013 has been completed, compiled and copied. The Annual Report includes official reports from the Clerk of Commission, from the Permanent Pastor, from the six church Committees (i.e., Congregational Care, Education, Facilities, Ministry, Mission and Personnel), from Starburst Christian Preschool, from the Warsaw Food Pantry and from the Church Treasurer. Beginning Sunday, April 6, copies of the UCW Annual Report for 2013 are available for church members to pick up after morning worship in the East Room. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. (Hebrews 13:16)

During the Lenten season, Christians often reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice that God, the Father, and

Jesus Christ, his Son, made for all humanity on Good Friday culminating in Easter’s glory. Sacrifice is too much to imagine in all its shapes, sizes and degrees: physical, emotional, spiritual, financial and time.

Members of our military endure a variety of sacrifices: leaving their families for long periods, isolation, loneliness and dangers that may cause injury or death. Police and firefighters are often in harm’s way as well. Look around at our congregation to see abundant examples of sacrifice: spouses caring for each other; parents caring for children; grown children caring for parents; siblings caring for each other; and, friends caring for friends. All of us depend upon one another for a myriad of reasons. Sacrifice is often evident in some way. Sacrifice is giving. Sacrifice is thinking of someone else other than ourselves.

Even on a Sunday morning, there are examples of people giving of their time, talent and resources for the greater good. Some work behind the scenes to prepare the program, message and bulletin; some open the church and clear sidewalks; some operate the sound system. We actually see those who greet, who light the candles, who read Scripture, who give the Children’s Message and adult message, who direct and sing in the choir, who take the offering and who provide refreshments for the Time of Fellowship.

Everyone has the opportunity to participate in our worship experience by signing up and giving to fellow church members.

The Congregational Care Committee continues to work quietly within our family of faith. Other members of the congregation quietly do the same.

Moments from the Mission Committee

Sharing Brings Joy…to Us…to Others…to God During the season of Lent, as The United Church of Warsaw prepares for Easter, we also will prepare for our One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) to be held on Easter Sunday, April 20. OGHS enables The United Church to join with millions of

Christians to share God’s love with those in need around the world. OGHS supports both specific ongoing international programs and responds to natural disasters around the world. Special envelopes for One Great Hour of Sharing will be available in Sunday bulletins on April 13 and April 20. Through One Great Hour of Sharing, lives are transformed through support that provides clean water, food, medicines, shelter, healthcare, education and disaster relief in the US and internationally. For additional information on OGHS, you are encouraged to check out: www.onegreathourofsharing.org.

What’s happening in Missions in the near future? In one month, on the first day of May, The United Church will host our annual May Breakfast. The Mission Committee invites members and friends of the congregation to begin now in planning for our 102nd May Breakfast. This year our annual breakfast will be on Thursday morning, May 1, in Fellowship Hall. Sign-up sheets for food preparers, servers, workers and food donations will be available in the East Room during Time of Fellowship.

Greetings from Starburst!

You have heard it said: “It takes a village to raise a child.” And it’s true! Within the boundaries of Starburst, it is also true that it takes a village to raise a child. We could not do as effective of a job of teaching our students were it not for the help of our community. Therefore, our gratitude goes to members of our community for their generous efforts on behalf of our students this past month: Gidget Bannister and Summit Family Dental Care; Police Chief Peter Hoffmeister; former Police Chief Bill Blythe; Police Officer Ryan Buttles; Police Deputy Mike Bentham; and, the staff at Sinclair Pharmacy. These friends of Starburst are all examples of God’s blessings to Starburst Christian Pre-school as well as to our church and community. Our hats go off to them for giving their time, their wisdom and their resources. Thank you all so much!

We welcome the season of spring, and we look forward to opportunities to play outside on the play-ground once the weather is warmer. In the month of April, we will study plants, frogs, recycling and bubbles, to name a few of our chosen subjects. In addition, from March 31 through April 11, we will celebrate the “Week of the Young Child.” Please come to the Connection of The United Church of Warsaw and witness the artwork and talents of our creative Starburst preschoolers.

Once the snow melts, may you enjoy April showers as we look forward to reaping the benefits of gentle rain. Happy Spring! Larene

Memorial and Commemorative Flowers Flowers, which are placed at the front of our church or chapel, are a lovely and loving addition to our worship setting. Flowers—either ordered from a local florist or freshly cut from a garden—can be a special way to honor special people on special events (e.g., birthdays, wedding anniversaries,

death anniversaries, celebrations of appreciation or other milestones). Betty James now serves as Flower Coordinator for The United Church of Warsaw. Please contact Betty (call or text: 716-474-2056) if you want to provide flowers for a particular Sunday and the reason that you are providing the flowers (i.e., to celebrate a special person, to honor an individual who is deceased or to commemorate a particular occasion). Betty will note the date on a Master Flower Schedule and communicate the information to our Administrative Assistant, Cindy Kiel, and to our pastor, Rev. Barbara, so that the donor of the flowers and the reason for the flowers may be included in the Sunday bulletin. If you reside outside Warsaw and wish to provide flowers, you may order and purchase flowers by phone from either of the two local florists. Please call Betty to arrange for the delivery of flowers at The United Church as well as to discuss with her what you desire to be done with the flowers following the Sunday worship service. The United Church of Warsaw invites you to honor and celebrate special people during special seasons…with the special gift of flowers.
