IntroductionAt present, Indian steel industry is undergoing expansion and modernisation of steel plants to meet the requirements of steel envisaged in the coming years. Rolling Mills being at the finishing end of the steel making process have been supplied with precision controlled facilities for meeting stringent quality requirements. Operation and management of these high-tech mills and processing lines require good skill and technical insight. Beside this the existing mills are facing challenges of rolling advanced high strength steels and critical product-mix for sophisticated applications and niche market. To meet these challenges, one needs to keep abreast with latest innovations in various fields such as deformation science, reheating technology, roll pass design, roll bite lubrication, roll materials, thermo-mechanical treatment, descaling, pickling, annealing, coating, modelling, automation, instrumentation, etc. It calls for dissemination of knowledge on the emerging technologies in rolling and finishing of steel.

In order to share technological advances in the said fields, an International Conference on Rolling and Finishing Technology of Steel (RAFTS) was organized at Ranchi (India) in October 2012. Large numbers of technology suppliers, users, researchers, educationists and consultants from India and abroad participated in this Conference to address the growing opportunities and challenges in Rolling and Finishing Mills. Knowledge and information gathered during the course of the Conference were highly useful for all the participants. Taking the journey forward, it has been decided to organise the 2nd International Conference on Rolling and Finishing Technology of Steel (RAFTS 2015) during September 8-10, 2015 at Ispat Bhawan, Ranchi (India).

The RAFTS 2015 is being organised by Technology Knowledge Society along with R&D Centre for Iron and Steel, the corporate research unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd. Theme of the conference has been chosen as “Emerging Technologies in Rolling Mills”. It is planned to discuss around 80 technical papers from all around the world on different topics related to rolling and finishing of flat and long steel products. Eminent speakers have been invited from different corners of the globe to share their valuable experiences in this field. The Conference will provide unique opportunity for technical and business discussions to all the stakeholders.

About the Organiser RAFTS-2015 is being organised by Technology Knowledge Society (TKS) in association with R&D Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) at Ranchi.

RDCISIt is the corporate R&D Centre of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), the largest steel producer in India. It employs more than 250 scientists and engineers and is a premier research organisation in the field of ferrous metallurgy. The Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and testing facilities including pilot scale laboratories. The major efforts of RDCIS are directed towards process innovations, product development, cost reduction and quality improvement in different SAIL plants. The Centre pursues


a number of collaborative research programmes with leading institutions in India and abroad. RDCIS also offers consultancy, specialised testing services, contract research and training assistance to various external organisations.

RDCIS has a dedicated group of Rolling Technologists who are undertaking valuable research projects for improving performance of hot and cold rolling mills. A dedicated laboratory, which is equipped with a state of the art experimental hot and cold rolling mill, is used for developing new steel products and optimisation of rolling parameters.

TKS RDCIS has been organising large number of Conferences on various topics such as Raw Materials, Iron Making, Steel Making, Refractory, Rolling, Automation, Analytical Techniques, Tribology, etc. With the experience of conducting such events over the years, the RDCIS executives have created a Technology Knowledge Society (TKS). It is a knowledge sharing platform that has prime objective of disseminating technological knowledge through Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Lectures, etc. on latest global developments related to Iron and Steel Industry. TKS is an independent professional body registered under the Society Registration Act 21, 1860.

Each technical session will begin with a keynote paper by an expert in the particular filed. In addition to this, eminent experts will speak on frontier areas of rolling technology in the Inaugural and PlenarySessions.Finally,themeoftheConference,thatis,theemergingtechnologiesinrollingmills,shallbedeliberateduponindepth inthePanelDiscussionduringtheValedictory Session.
