As our boating season is winding down, I've been reflecting on the past few months. Despite these uncertain times, Seaford Yacht Club has remained strong. With precautions we have carried on with Club Cruises, modified monthly dinners and happy hours. There was a long lull during the height of the pandemic and during our remodeling construction phase, but we are back in action now! We have added new members and have several more applications pending.

Our Labor Day Club Cruise to Cape Charles had over 20 boats participating. The annual Stay Cruise on September 25th was a blast. Ten boats made the trip to the Club to hang out at the SYC docks with the regular slip holders. Vice Commodore John Leist and his band entertained us after the pot luck dinner on the back deck.

That was followed by the Summer Party finally being held the next day. An assortment of games outside for the kids, rum punch and sangria for the adults, and a delicious catered meal made the long wait worth it. Jaclyn Smith did an outstanding job in planning and making it all come together. Numerous Club members came through and helped out with decorations, set up, serving food and beverages, and of course the cleanup.

I hope everyone continues to stay healthy, and will soon feel safe enough to join us during our fall dinners and activities. 2020 OYSTER ROAST CANCELED

We are sorry to announce that the Oyster Roast is cancelled this year due to the uncertainty of COVID-19.

It is a huge party that takes us at least 6 weeks to prepare for and not knowing what restrictions we will have or how many people are comfortable coming we have decided it is best that we cancel it for this year. - Submitted by Bob & Janet Beilhart, Oyster Roast Party Co-Chairs -

LABOR DAY CRUISE

The SYC cruisers had a great time in Cape Charles over Labor Day Weekend at Oyster Farm Marina. We had a great turnout of SYC boats. Some made the voyage on Friday and had great weather. Others made the trip or tried to make the trip on Saturday. There were rough seas but the ones that could not make it Saturday made the trip on Sunday. The weather in CC was gorgeous.

Our Fleet Captains, Mike Webb and Jimmy Jones, and their wives, Jeanette Webb and Betty Ann Jones, did a wonderful job planning the events of the weekend. Friday evening offered a Happy Hour and pot luck (or BYOF). Saturday started with a King’s Creek dinghy cruise with the SYCers and a group that attended the Concert in the Park to see English Channel perform. Sunday started with an informal brunch on the dock and then a planned morning cocktail hour with Bloody Marys and Mimosas. A special SYC wine tasting at Gull Hummock commenced in the afternoon and was followed by delicious pizza from Deadrise Pies that Fleet Captain of Power, Jimmy Jones, picked up for all of the cruisers that placed their orders. A Sunset Dinghy Cruise commenced at 7:30 PM and the sunset was absolutely breathtaking. We ended the night watching the spectacular fireworks show from the campground. Our dock had the perfect view!

It was a wonderful weekend with our fellow members as well as guests that are potential members. We also met a family that was docked on our dock that has come to visit the Club after seeing how much fun SYC members have together. Truly a good time had by all and a testament to our slogan of being the friendliest people on the Chesapeake Bay! Cruising with fellow SYCers is always a great way to bond. Join us next season!

STAY CRUISE Stay Cruise was moved from Saturday, 9/26 to Friday, 9/25 so SYC could squeeze in the rescheduled Summer Party and make it a big weekend of fun at SYC! The 2nd Annual Stay Cruise did not disappoint. The slips were full in our marina with slip holders and SYC members that brought their boats over for the weekend. The goal of the SYC Stay Cruise is to give every member at SYC a feeling of our cruise weekends during the summer.

The Friday event started with a Progressive Happy Hour on the SYC docks with many boats offering cocktails to taste. Thank you to all that shared their cocktail mixing expertise. Members had a ball despite the rainy weather. Happy Hour was followed by a pot luck on the Clubhouse deck. Live music was provided by John Leist and his group. After eating many members enjoyed dancing to the music. Unfortunately due to the weather we had to cancel the planned bonfire.

We hosted the family we met at our Labor Day Cruise in Cape Charles and they were very impressed with the Club facilities and all of the nice people. Their kids had a ball playing the games we have in The Barnacle. Thank you to all that made them feel so welcome!

The weekend rolled on gearing up for the Summer Party. Due to a sewage leak in the river that the VDH set out guidelines to adhere to, we could not have the planned Commodore’s Cup races. (2020 keeps on giving…) Coast Guard inspections were offered during the day on Saturday. Saturday evening ended with the (Stay) Summer Party.

Many members called it an earlier night than usual and we heard it was due to the many amazing cocktails that were served the prior evening at Stay Cruise!

A fun weekend and another one for the memory books. If you missed the Stay Cruise this year, make sure to put it on your calendar next year! It is a great new tradition at SYC.

OCTOBER HAPPY HOUR

The October Happy Hour celebrated Oktoberfest! Bill Edmunds headed up a tasting of a variety of beers and members enjoyed a pot luck dinner and camaraderie in The Barnacle.

SEPTEMBER HAPPY HOUR The September Happy Hour was a fun and informal gathering with a pot luck dinner while others brought their own food. The Einfelds were guests at the Happy Hour and have submitted their application to join SYC. A great time for us to show the hospitality of the Friendliest People on the Chesapeake Bay!

SEPTEMBER DINNER MEETING: Roadkill Dinner The dinner was hosted by Art Dister and Tom Feldhaus and their team of manly men offering the finest “roadkill” cuisine (aka mystery meat…

or whatever meat was on sale at the store…)

SYC members gathered for an official meeting (it felt like it had been awhile) and were able to have fun and get updates on the latest news for the Club.

Members were also able to check out the new furniture in the Club Room!

(STAY) SUMMER PARTY

We were FINALLY able to have our Summer Party (even if it was technically fall) on Saturday, 9/26! The Governor of Virginia moved Hampton Roads back into Phase 3 just in time for our re-schedule date. Third time was a charm with well over 100 SYC members attending the (Stay) Summer Party!

The party was based on a notion of returning back to our Clubhouse home. Red right return was the inspiration and bringing back the history of fun that has been had at SYC over 4 decades. Members and guests were greeted in The Barnacle with a signature cocktail, Red Right Return Rum Punch, and a signature mocktail, SYC Friendly Seas Punch. Outdoor games were set up throughout the lawn for kids and adults to enjoy along with signature sangrias being served at the Tiki bar. Appetizers flowed while everyone enjoyed happy hour. Dinner was catered by Revolution Golf & Grille and the fried chicken, BBQ, mac & cheese, collard greens, mashed potatoes, salad, and rolls were enjoyed. Cupcakes were served for dessert. Members enjoyed playing the outdoor games, bar games in The Barnacle, watching football on a big screen in the Meeting Room and on the TV in The Barnacle, and enjoying the company of fellow SYCers. Kid packs were also created for the younger party goers

that included SYC logo coloring pages. It was wonderful to see so much energy back at SYC and see kids running around the yard again having so much fun with each other and their families.

Planning a party during a pandemic is not the easiest thing to do. I know the execution was hard but safety guidelines had to be put into place to keep our members and guests safe. An example was the appetizer preparation. It was detailed and took more time than normal appetizer preparation but it was imperative we had individual appetizers vs. a self-serve option to allow for safe serving. Thank you to that team for helping prepare them because I know it was not ideal or what the prepara-tion team was used to doing. Blame COVID!

I want to send out a million THANK YOUs to all of SYC for making the Summer Party a great event. Thank you to the big team that helped with the set up, during party serving, and the clean up. It takes a village and we have a great one! Shoutout to everyone that helped! Definitely could not have done this without the help of Ginger Smith, Jake Smith, Joan Gilday Edmonds, Bill Edmunds, Donna Gilroy, Angee Berry, Brad Berry, Janet Copeland Beilhart, Bob Beilhart, Penny Lewis Showalter, Pete Showalter, Doris Smoker, Nancy Hinman, Mark Hinman, Sandy Alex, Ashley Green, Jeanette Webb, Lizz Bollinger Epperson, Greg Epperson, Becky Riley, Jimmy Jones, Betty Ann Jones, Sandy Hopkins, Kathryn Pompei Moore, Susan

Pettyjohn, Troy Waller, Bill Waller, Faye Waller, Ben Huggin, Kevin MacRitchie, Rob Calloway, Michelle A Calloway, and all of the people that jumped right in to clean up after the party. Thank you to the members & guest (Sandra Byrd, Joan Gilday Edmonds, Lizz Bollinger

Epperson, Kathryn Pompei Moore, Jessica Showalter, Penny Lewis Showalter) that joined the deviled egg contest. They were delicious! I know I have missed names of people that helped. Thank you for pulling together to help make this party a great time and putting up with the crazy Jaclyn party planning ways. (Now you all can wonder how my parents are still willing to help me after they have endured the parties I throw at my house. I wonder that myself.)

Outdoor games and games in The Barnacle have been donated the Club . I donated big Jenga, big checkers, giant inflatable bowling (the hit of the

party with the kiddos), flying disc game, a putting green (we do need a putter so if anyone has one they are not using bring it by SYC), lawn darts, and all of the games in The Barnacle. Thank you to Ava Sparrer for donating the big Connect 4 game. Thank you again to Ginger Smith for donating the new cornhole boards. Please use them when you are at the Club and enjoy!

Get to know long time members Gladys & Otto Wagner!

Otto and Gladys Wagner joined Seaford Yacht Club shortly after moving to Seaford. They designed and had a brick rancher built on Chisman Creek.

Otto is a retired Air Force Colonel. He was a pilot who flew 24 different aircraft during his 32 year career. He retired as D.D. of Intelligence for Tactical Air Command at Langley A.F.B.

When SYC bought the Goodwin Neck property and old farmhouse, Otto quickly requested the illustrious position of House, Grounds, & Dock Chairman. The membership was only about 37 family units at the time. With the help

of other SYC members walls were removed, patched, and painted. Floors refinished and the well pump repaired. (It was well water only then.) Chickens and snakes hat to be dealt with. Even a new dock was started among many other things. Otto guaranteed the first mortgage on the property and served on the Board of Trustees. He set up a volleyball court and was Fleet Captain of Sail.

Gladys was a Registered Nurse at

Riverside Regional Hospital for almost 25 years. Gladys was SYC Entertainment Chair which included monthly dinner meetings and the special events. Also, she had been SYC housekeeper and is currently Co-chair of the Bridge Group.

With many years of SYC involvement, sailing was front and center for many years. Starting with a 24’ trailerable boat, then a 27’ sloop. Finally, a 35’ Pearson sloop. Many days and weeks were spent on the water with family

and yacht club friends.

Other hobbies included flying (Otto con-tinued to give private flying lessons). The last plane was a bi-plane, fully acrobatic and he enjoyed taking friends and family for a few loops and rolls. He also buzzed a SYC raft-up on the York River. Other hobbies included gardening, swimming, golf, and snow skiing ever winter. With a blended family of 6 children, the family has grown to 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. One granddaughter was married at SYC. One daughter, Audrey Isbell, was a member for a few years. One son and one grandson are deceased.

Currently living in a second story condo in Nelson’s Grant. It is close to many restaurants, church, friends, and best of all the Seaford Yacht Club.
