When the air conditioning unit is turned on it creates a sort of vacuum that sucks air from inside the home and into the air handler. Inside the air handler, their are coils that are cooled. As the air passes through these cold coils, the temperature of the air is reduced and made to be cold.

HOW DO FURNACE AIR FILTERS WORK

Depending on how your air conditioning unit was installed, the filter might be found at the inside air handler, the return grill, or in a vent in the ceiling. Regardless of where the filter is placed, they all perform the same job which is to clean the air circulating throughout the air.

Most of your standard AC filters utilize a pleated filter design that looks like a zig-zag. This design is used because it is very effective at remove air born pollutants. This pleated design also extends the surface air that the air is forced to travel through. Here is an image that illustrates how this works.

REMOVE AIR BORN POLLUTANTS

ELECTROSTATICALLY CHARGED SYNTHETIC FILTER

The material that the pleats are usually made of is an electrostatically charged synthetic filter media. As air passes through the media, an electromagnetic charge is activated. This electronic charge literally electrifies the media which then acts like a magnet attracting particles. These particles include things like dirt, dust, pollen, pet dander and much more. Eventually the filter gets full of dirt and it needs to be replaced. This is what a clean and dirty furnace filter look like.
