    SEMESTER 2 REPORT

    FILM INDUSTRY UK: MFC5072

A Reflective Report on the Process and Performance of our Group Presentation: HowBritish is a British Film

We were set the task of giving a 15 minute presentation to the class on a topic of our

choosing (provided it was relevant to the module). This report documents the development

process as well as an evaluation of how successfully we collaborated as a group and how

    effective the end product was.

As a group we decided to look into the question, How British is a British film? It was a

topic that we personally found interesting, so thought that our finding would be entertainingto our audience. It was also a topic that we believed would provide a wide scope of results

when researched, enabling us to make an informative presentation. Our aim wasnt to force

an answer upon our audience, but to provide relevant information, added with our personal

feelings on the subject to help the audience form their own opinionthis was something we

decided on as a group early on in the proceedings.

In terms of how we would put our presentation together we took a logical approach that also

existed to amount an equal workload to each of us. Firstly, as our chosen topic was so broad

we decided what avenues we would discuss and came up with some general points to

research. We split these points between us and began research individually. Once we had

returned with our findings we again tried to come up with a fair way of distributing tasks.

Each group member was given a task in accordance to their strengths; I believe we were all

level headed when it came down to this and put egos aside. Jack is the most skilled when it

comes to computers, so he was given the task of the look of the presentation and handouts

and putting them together in their final stages. It was decided that I perhaps had the best

writing style of the group, consequently I wrote the script that we would present, and decided

on the voice we would use. The script was put together from our collective findings. We

divided the presentation so that it was roughly equal in terms of speaking parts; however it

was thought that Beccie would be the best candidate to lead the presentation.

When it came to the actual performance of the presentation I was pleased with the outcome. Ibelieve the content was good, if a little too heavy rather than entertaining. I also think that it

wasnt the most engagingpresentation; this could have been due to the small amount of

visual aids. We did incorporate some visual aids such as charts to better demonstrate our

points and summarized our arguments into digestible bullet points on the slide. However,

there were slides that were fairly plain, leaving nothing but our voices to engage the

audience. It was a conscience decision to leave out video clips, because we were looking into

the industry on a broad scope rather than studios, directors or films clips wouldnt have been

appropriate. On a personal level, I felt I remained audible and coherent throughout the

presentation, perhaps I read a bit quickly at times and wasnt as charismatic as I could have

been, but overall I believe I delivered solidly. I believed each individual in the group

presented in a similar vein in this regard, solid but a little uncharismatic. Overall though, Ithought the informative nature of the content that we presented was enough to establish a

good presentation. I think we did well collectively not to stumble through the script that was

written. One potential negative of our performance was in answering the question at the end,

the previous few groups hadnt been asked any, which I think somewhat lulled us into a false

sense of security that we wouldnt posed with questions. Once asked there was a moment of

hesitation, I eventually answered the question confidently but possibly not entirely

coherently. Although I do feel this was a small problem that hopefully didnt detract from theoverall presentation.

As a group, we worked together quite efficiently. There were a few differences in opinion in

the direction we should take but these were quickly resolved as we were able to make

compromises. It was to our advantage that we know each other well and live together in a

student house. This made it easy to arrange and successfully attend group meetings. Equally,

it enabled us to badger each other if we thought a group member wasnt pulling their weight

something that fortunately wasnt required much. I feel we all put a fair effort in and shared

the workload so there were no altercations. In all honesty I couldnt really fault the members

of my group as we all completed the work that we had agreed upon in our meetings on timeand to a decent standard. There is no reason I can think of to mark down my peers.
