Hello Dental Assistants!
What an exciting time of year, spring
is in the air! The Spring Seminar was
on April 22, 2017! I can't wait to tell
you about it at the next meeting! The
CDAA has been working with
Propellus to see what changes our
organization can make going forward
into a new season. We would
appreciate your input! Please feel free
to reach out to us and let us know
what you would like to see in the
CDAA next year!
Another exciting event coming up
soon is the AGM, scheduled for May
15th. We would love to see you come
out for a presentation on relationships
in the workplace! We are also looking
for some volunteers for the board;
looking for a Hospitality Chair, and a
President Elect! This could be an
exciting opportunity for you to give
back to the dental assisting community
and the CDAA! I hope to see many of
you there!

The field of dentistry is unlike any other field of medicine in that it is completely built on relationships. How are you cultivating the relationships that you have with your patients and colleagues in the workplace? With consistent changes with insurance coverages and the increasing competition from more dental practices, how can you ensure keeping your current patient base and continuing to add patients, while working
effectively in the workplace?

Oral Health Month
On Friday April 29th the CDAA will target
families at the Children's Hospital with a
presentation including oral health tips such as
brushing, flossing procedures and techniques.
On April 22nd we had another successful Spring Seminar at the Valley Ridge Golf Club!
Those who attended spent the day learning about several
dental related topics to use in their practices and towards their
CCP learning objectives.
They also had an opportunity to meet our board members and speakers as well as check out several booths, enjoy some great food and scenery in this great location. We would like to thank Johnson Insurance, Paterson, Face Forward Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stream Dental and Holly Doll with LipSense for their sponsorship and door prize donations.
We would like to extend our appreciation to the
speakers, Bob McAllister, Mallory, Bobbie-Jo
VanRuskenveld and Dr Lee Darichuk for
ensuring we received the most informative
presentations; Valley Ridge Golf Club for their
wonderful venue and service; as well as the
volunteers of our own board who made the event run smoothly.
We look forward to another success next year.
Thank you to those who attended
our New Beginnings
session with Propellus! It was a
great success with positive feedback
for the board to move forward with.
A great big thank you to Henry
Schein for donating the Board Room
space and food, delicious OPA!! In
the near future the board may decide
on bylaw changes to improve
operations of our association, they
will be announced at an upcoming
meeting.

All of our volunteers take time out of their lives to keep our Association
running, a number of volunteers take on more than one position and most
have volunteered for several years. Their dedication and efforts do not go
unnoticed; we all see that volunteers put many hours into organizing meetings,
seminars, presentations and providing members with not only important
information about our profession but also all the benefits of membership.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK EVERYONE!

Highlights from the board meeting and AGM:
Local enrolment for 2017 to date:
Calgary: 187 Edmonton: 634
Visits to other Colleges/Provincial Associations:
The purpose of these visits is to find out how other health profes-
sional organizations operate, introduce our provincial association
to them and open communication on issues that may be of mutual
interest to our professional members. In March, Dianne Hennig
AADA Corporate Agent and Janet Hanzen, AADA Resource
Librarian attended the CLPNA (College of Licensed Practical
Nurses) Council Meeting. They found the meeting to be very in-
formative.
WCB Submission:
After our Nov 2016 submission to the WCB review panel, the
Panel responded that our request for consideration of coverage
for Dental Staff does not fall within the Panel mandate. Our sub-
mission is now being sent to the Minister of Labor for considera-
tion. We hope to receive a response back by the end of May
Health Professions Unit Meeting:
Dianne Hennig and Danelle Fulawka met with the Director of
Health Professions Policy. Several issues were brought forward
and discussed and the meeting was very positive. It was agreed
that AADA will continue to meet regularly with the HPU.
CDAA (Canadian Dental Assistants Association) invite to
become an Organizational Member:
A motion was passed during the AGM to accept the invitation to
become an organizational Member of the Canadian DAA. AADA
believes that becoming an OM will be an important relationship
for AADA. It was also agreed that a historical article about the
CDAA will be prepared and presented to members to educate
them about the importance of support for our national association
and how this association has helped our profession advance.
CADA (College of Alberta Dental Assistants) CDAA (Calgary)
president Chantelle DeJong attended the Feb 2017 Council Meet-
ing in Calgary. Highlights from the meeting were: 1) A Draft of a
2017-2019 Strategic Plan was approved, no observers were al-
lowed during the presentation. 2) The CDI program in Calgary
was approved and CADA has scheduled a visit in June to assess
the Edmonton program for accreditation 3) CADA is buying a
cyber insurance policy ( $1 million coverage) to protect them from
viruses and online scams.
Past news re dental fees and RDA salaries:
AADA agreed to prepare a position statement on the productivity
value an RDA brings to the dental practice and the relatively small
impact staff wages have on dental fees.
AADA will hold the next Tea & Talk and 5th Anniversary
Celebration on Saturday Oct. 14, 2017 in Red Deer. As this
is the 5th Anniversary of the AADA we plan to have a special cele-
bration to honor this significant milestone. Mark your calendars
and plan to attend.
