COMMUNITYDR. SELUK TRAVELS TO HAITI MISSION OF MERCY

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

In March, Dr. Seluk traveled to Haiti for 9 days with the George Stines Foundation to provide dental care to underserved areas. The George Stines Foundation was founded in 2000 by Dr. Alfred Stines, a dentist from Howell, Michigan. Stines also owns and operates 3 clinics in Haiti. While in Haiti, Dr. Seluk primarily performed fillings and extractions. He remarked on the exceedingly dense bones of his Haitian patients, which often made drilling and extractions difficult. Despite the 90º heat and high humidity, Dr. Seluk was happy to help. His new patients were grateful and eager to sit in his chair. Although they only spoke French-based créole, Dr. Seluk was able to communicate with them with the little French he knew.

Dr. Seluk was continuously amazed by the poverty in the remote areas he visited. One of the villages he cared for had never even seen a dentist! Because there is no social welfare, thousands of villagers were selling items in the streets to make a living. Most of the people only ate three full meals a week.

While most of his time in Haiti was spent in the clinic, Dr. Seluk was able to have a little fun too. He explored the villages, the beach, and a nearby hydroponic facility.

Although Dr. Seluk has given back to the local community for many years, this was his first international mis-sion trip. He hopes to assist on more mission trips in the future.

In an effort to provide dental care to disadvantaged individuals in the Michigan community, Dr. Seluk joined a team of dentists, dental students, and other volunteers at the 2016 MDA Foundation Michigan Mission of Mercy. The Mission of Mercy (MOM) took place on June 10th and 11th at Macomb Community College in Warren. Throughout those two days, volunteers saw 1,249 patients and nearly $1 million worth of dental care was provided at no charge. Dr. Seluk primarily performed prosthodontic work and took impressions. Leslie, Michelle, and Danielle got involved too! They volunteered to set up and prepare for the event the day before. Over the course of the event, a total of 4,986 procedures were performed and a total of $138,539 were raised from 124 donors.

Together as an office, Dr. Seluk, Michelle, Danielle, and Leslie have participated in a variety of community events over the years.
