A Glass Mansion for Noypi

Mojo called Noypi. Their conversation went like this:

Okay, Jojo?Jojo: Well, Mr. President, I think you were dreaming in your sleep. The reality is that the media people were accusing me of owning a P40-million glass mansion! They’d be asking where I got the money to build it. You got to back me up, Mr. President.Noynoy: Well, you can tell them that you built it for me. I’ll show them the “virtual reality” machine. Heck, I’ll even let them try it so they can experience “virtual reality,” too. They’d love it!Jojo: But Mr. President, that was just a dream.Noynoy: No, it was not a dream. It’s real, Jojo. Real!Jojo: It was only a… oh! never mind. Ay naku, maloloko ako!

DFA ready to evacuate Filipinos in JapanThe Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is doing contingency measures if emergency evacuation arises for Filipinos residing in Fukushima Prefecture and other nearby Japanese cities in danger of exposure to radiation from the earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The ABS-CBN News Team reported that a total of 100 Filipinos have already been evacuated to Tokyo, which is 250 kilometers away from the plant. The News team also reported frantic calls for help from Filipinos in Sendai, Chiba and Iwate prefecture asking Philippine authorities to help them evacuate.

As Japanese authorities declared a 20-30 km exclusion zone from the Fukushima plant, DFA Spokesman Ed Malaya they are negotiating with Philippine Airlines and other carriers to increase flights to Tokyo.

The Philippine Embassy in Japan is now at crisis level 2, which means that Filipinos are encouraged to consider voluntary departure on their own. Once the situation reaches crisis level 3, the government will arrange and pay for voluntary repatriation.

The threat of radiation poisoning prompted some foreign governments to start evacuating their citizens.

Philippine authorities however said it had no immediate plans to begin mass evacuations, saying it would follow the advice of Japanese authorities who said harmful radiation exposure only covered areas close to the plant.

Instead, the DFA has activated a Crisis Management Center for families who have relatives in Japan. The hotline numbers at the DFA-OUMWA’s Crisis Management Center are 834-4646 and 834-4580. Requests for information may also be sent through e-mail address [email protected].

Riding on My Bicycle (Icelandic Alternative Rock Music)

Perhaps a privilege enjoyed by a passionate music enthusiast like me is having

a diverse selection of music that I can listen to. I don’t rely on what commercial radio and media offer to music listeners, because I know well that they are very limited. They don’t cover even ten percent of the entire music in the world. I am a proactive music listener, exploring music and genres and discovering and rediscovering old and new artists. And through this musical adventure that I got acquainted with bands from countries other than the U.S., U.K., and the Philippines. For instance, because of researching, I discovered a number of interesting Alternative Rock bands originating from Iceland, such as the following.

Sigur Rós (Icelandic for Victory Rose) was formed in 1994 in Reykjavík. The band has released 5 studio albums: Von (1997), Ágætis byrjun (1999), ( ) (2002), Takk... (2005), and Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008). My recommended songs are “Leit af lífi” and “Streamside.” Members of the band are Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson (lead vocals, guitars,

bowed guitar, keyboards, harmonica, banjo), Georg “Goggi” Hólm (bass, glockenspiel), Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson (synthesizers, keyboards, piano, organs, programming, guitars, flute, tin whistle, oboe, banjo, backing vocals), and Orri Páll Dýrason (drums, keyboards).

The Elgar Sisters (1984–1986) was a group formed by Guðlaugur Kristinn Óttarsson and Björk Guðmundsdóttir (Yes, the popular solo artist Björk). The duo composed and recorded several songs but, unfortunately, never released an album. Three of such

songs (“Glóra,” “Síðasta Ég,” and “Stígðu Mig”), as well as a number of previously unreleased tracks from Björk’s other early bands (including Tappi Tíkarass and KUKL), luckily, were released by Björk as part of her CD box set entitled Family Tree (2003). My recommended song by The Elgar Sisters is “Masse Critique.”

Kukl was another Icelandic group of which Björk was a member Its style leaned more towards the Gothic subgenre of Alternative Rock music. Echoes of Bauhaus, The Cure, Killing Joke, and Siouxsie & the Banshees resonate especially from their debut album, The Eye (1984). Recently, Kukl’s music became commercially accessible when Björk included a number of Kukl’s tracks in her 2003-released CD box setFamily Tree. My recommended songs are “Assassin,” “Dismembered,” “Gibraltar,” and “Open the Window and Let the Spirit Fly Free.” Kukl was Björk Guðmundsdóttir (vocals), Sigtryggur Baldursson (drums), Guðlaugur Kristinn Óttarsson (guitars), Birgir Mogensen (bass),

The Sugarcubes (1986–1992) – I’ve known this band in the late ‘80s, way before its vocalist Björk launched a solo career. I first heard their single “Motorcrash” on DWNU 107.5, a Rock-format FM radio station based in Metro Manila, Philippines. Learning that the band was Icelandic hyped my interest in them. Other Sugarcubes songs that I like include “Birthday,” “Hit,” “Regina,” and “Chihuahua.”

The Sugarcubes were Björk Guðmundsdóttir (vocals), Einar Örn Benediktsson (vocals, trumpet), Þór Eldon (guitar), Bragi Ólafsson (bass), Einar Melax (keyboards), Margrét Örnólfsdóttir (keyboards), and Sigtryggur Baldursson (drums).Final Note

Ordinary and casual music listeners most often cast their spotlight only on the North American and the British music scenes; in doing so, they fail to realize that they are missing a lot of music found elsewhere.

Merci in jeopardy

For the second time in two years, Ombudsman Merceditas “Merci” Gutierrez

will soon be facing impeachment charges against her in the House of Representatives. But this time around, with her protector — former President and now-Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo — no longer in power, Gutierrez would be dealing with a House dominated by a coalition allied with President Benigno Aquino III.

Recently, in an attempt to defend herself from calls for her resignation, Gutierrez held a press conference where she defiantly declared: “There is no law that says you should resign if you have a case. There would be no due process.” She said she is ready to face an impeachment trial in the Senate.

During the first impeachment complaint against her in March 2009, she arrogantly said, “I have my mandate, I have my term and I believe this is my duty, my service

to our countrymen.” With the word “my” repeated four times in one sentence, one wonders if she really cared much about what her “mandate” was all about.

Merciless Merci

When Gutierrez took office on

December 1, 2005, she declared, “I will be merciless to the grafters… no one can bribe me!” But within eight months, “Merci,” as her friends and associates affectionately call her, was accused of being too merciful to influential people suspected of graft and corruption. On July 31, 2006, the Malaya editorial said: “The Office of the Ombudsman has become a joke after Merceditas Gutierrez, a classmate of Mike Arroyo, succeeded Simeon Marcelo. How many big-time corruption cases have been sleeping the ‘sleep of the dead’ on the desk of Gutierrez?”

Appointed to a seven-year term of office by Arroyo, the constitution stipulates that the Ombudsman can

only be removed from office “on impeachment for, and conviction of, culpable violation of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes, or betrayal of public trust.”

What made the impeachment complaint extraordinarily unusual is that Gutierrez, as the Ombudsman, is the “Tanodbayan” — literally, the “Protector of the People” — who is duty-bound to prosecute corrupt public officials who use their positions to enrich themselves. That’s her mandate. If she fails to perform her mandate, then she will be derelict of her constitutional duty to “protect the people.” That would be tantamount to “betrayal of public trust,” an impeachable offense.

Corruption Prior to her appointment

as Ombudsman, Gutierrez was appointed by Arroyo as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and Chairman of the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission — or Anti-Corruption Czar — in December 2004. Her two concurrent appointments made her one of the most powerful officials in the Arroyo administration.

But it was during Gutierrez’s “czarist” days that corruption dramatically increased. In 2004, before she became the Anti-Corruption Czar, the Philippines was the fifth most corrupt country

in Asia. In 2005, during her first “czarist” year, the Philippines became the third most corrupt country in Asia. In 2006, during her first year as Ombudsman, the country moved up to second most corrupt country in Asia. In 2007 and 2008, the country became the most corrupt country in Asia. In 2009, the country improved to sixth place. In 2010, however, it moved up to fourth most corrupt country on a list of 16 Asian countries.

First impeachment complaint

The basis for the first

impeachment complaint against Gutierrez involved at least five cases of corruption in high places, which Gutierrez allegedly failed to investigate or prosecute.

Although then-president

Arroyo had publicly distanced herself from the impeachment complaint against her three-time appointee and friend of her husband, many believed that Arroyo pressured — or bribed — most of those who signed the impeachment petition to withdraw their signatures. As a result only 30 congressmen’s signatures remained on the petition, which was not enough to meet the one-third minimum requirement for an impeachment complaint to progress.

Second impeachment complaint

This time around, with ex-

president Arroyo incapable of protecting Gutierrez, impeachment seems imminent. Last March 15, 2011, the House Committee on Justice submitted its final committee report and the Articles of Impeachment to the House Committee on Rules, which found probable cause to impeach Ombudsman Merceditas Navarro-Gutierrez for “betrayal of public trust.” The report’s prefatory statement says, “When an impeachable officer is no longer able to faithfully discharge his duties and protect the highest interests of the Republic, the fundamental law grants one remedy to vindicate the people’s will and restore the trust in their government. That ultimate sovereign remedy is impeachment by the popular branch of government.”

This is squarely in line with the provision of Section 2, Article XI of the 1987 Constitution, which states: “The President, the Vice-President, the Members of the Supreme Court, the Members of the Constitutional Commissions, and the Ombudsman may be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, culpable violation of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes, or betrayal of public trust.”

The Articles of Impeachment contain six allegations against Gutierrez, to wit:1. Inaction of the Ombudsman in the matter of the fertilizer fund scam;2. Inaction of the Ombudsman in the matter of the MegaPacific deal;3. Inaction of the Ombudsman in the matter of the Euro Generals;4. Unreasonable failure to take prompt and immediate action on complaints filed against various public officials, including former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Jose Miguel Arroyo with regard to the NBN-ZTE broadband project;5. Inexcusable delay of the Ombudsman in conducting and concluding its investigation into the wrongful death of Ensign Philip Andrew Pestaño aboard a Philippine navy vessel; and6. The Office of the Ombudsman has performed dismally as shown by the low conviction rate achieved by the office.

It is expected that the Articles of Impeachment – House Resolution 1089 -- would be debated and voted upon in a plenary session of the House the week before Congress goes into its month-long Holy Week recess on March 25. It would take at least 94 votes – or 1/3 of the 283-member House – to impeach Gutierrez. However, it is anticipated that as many as 150 congressmen would vote for impeachment.

Senate trial

Once the House impeaches

Gutierrez, the next -- and final -- step is a Senate trial where Gutierrez would either be convicted and removed from office or absolved. The Senate trial is expected to start in May after the recess. It would take at least 16 votes – or 2/3 of the 23-member Senate -- to convict Gutierrez. However, with Sen. Ping Lacson still out of the country, there will only be 22 senator-judges on hand to render a verdict. The question is: Can Gutierrez convince eight senator-judges to absolve her or can the House prosecutors convince 16 senator-judges to convict her? It’s going to be a toss-up either way. But my take is that the outcome would be decided by one vote.

Unless a cork plugging a bottle is removed, the content of the bottle will not flow out. Similarly, for as long as Merci Gutierrez remains as the Ombudsman, corruption cases will be bottled up and justice will not be served.

It’s time for Merci to have her day in the “people’s court.” Mercy or no mercy?

What happened to Shaira Luna?

Far from Quiet

If you were still in the Philippines in the ‘90s, you must have heard of her name.

She was the toddler who already read science books; the little girl who played a lot of musical instruments. She was the eight-year old kid who was called the junior anatomist for knowing how the cardiovascular system works. She was the “Promil gifted child” who, in the Promil (milk formula brand) commercial, recited that the sun is the center of the solar system, and so on and so forth.

She was so popular that time that moms would like their children to be just like her. When my mom knew that Shaira spends her time reading Encyclopedia books, my mom bought me a set too. But of course, I did not read them. I was not Shaira Luna, and my mom realized that right away.

I saw Shaira once. She was the guest speaker in one of the Regional Schools Press Conference I attended in high school. She was only 12 that time, and was about to enter college to earn a Human Biology Degree. As a guest speaker, she told us that we should not let anyone look down on us just because we are young. She furthered her speech by talking about intelligence and excellence, and ended it by playing the song “Ikaw” on her flute. I was astounded by how smart and talented she is. I guess at that moment, I wished to be on her shoes.

Fast forward. Five years later, there were talks of the town about her becoming “astray”. She was not the gifted child anymore; instead she was a typical teenager

hanging around in bars, listening to the bands playing. She was no more the nerdy girl who spends her time studying, and digesting every page of the book. She did the opposite. She skipped classes, strolled in the malls, and chose to just have fun. She did not become a doctor at 19, as people expected her to be. She did not make it to the political world, or to show business, or to the community of nation- builders or scientists. Shaira’s fame just went with the wind. Gone. Most people eventually learned to forget her.

Few weeks ago though, she was featured in ABS-CBN’s Storyline. Shaira is really now a lady, far different from the first time I saw her in person. She still is smart but her looks will make you clueless that she was the kid whose IQ was for the genius. Shaira talked about her life- how for some years she lived according to the expectations of her mom, and the people around her. She grew up with the public all eyes on her. She had to be at her best because she was told that it’s the way the gifted should behave. She was ridiculed whenever she flunks the tests or could not answer class recitations, and her being a “genius”, everytime that happened, was taken against her. Shaira decided to quit school, and tried to see the world she’s missed to look at, because of the pressures of her being a genius, and of the people seeing her that way. Now, Shaira is a freelance digital photographer, and is happy on what she is doing. She has lost and found herself. She is independent and free. Shaira now

lives her life the way she chose it to be.

Watching the feature story about her, I’ve come to admire Shaira Luna more, for braving to become who she wants to be. She walked away from people’s expectations and pressures upon her. I guess this is what sanity and intelligence mean- you create your own life story because you want to be happy, and you are happy because you were the one who created it. What Shaira Luna did was an act of overcoming the fear to be different- something that a lot of us remain powerless with. She may not be as popular and phenomenal as she was before, but does she really care? She is still smart and bright, and she knows herself better than anyone else who feels sorry for what she has become now. Actually, she can still be at her best in her chosen craft. She still is gifted. This time though, she does not have any business being told by the world on what she should do. She will

discover life at her own pace, and through the decisions, that she, and not anyone else, makes for her.

I will end this article quoting some lines of Paulo Coelho in his book “Veronika Decides to Die”. Here it is:

“You have two choices: to control your mind, or to let your mind control you. You are already familiar with the latter experience, allowing yourself to be swept along by fears, neuroses, insecurity, for we all have self- destructive tendencies. Don’t confuse insanity with a loss of control. Remember that in the Sufi tradition, the master- Nasrudin- is the one everyone calls a madman. And it is precisely because his fellow citizens consider him insane that Nasrudin can say whatever he thinks, and do whatever he wants... That’s how it should be with you; stay insane but behave like normal people. Run the risk of being different, but learn to do so without attracting

attention. Concentrate on this flower and allow the real “I” to reveal itself”.

“What is the real “I”?, asked Veronika.

The man seemed surprised by the interruption, but he answered her question.

“It’s what you are, not what others make of you.”

When you turn 16 it feels like a milestone. You start to feel more grown up and

can’t wait till you turn 18 in a couple years. You parents start to worry that you girls are going to get into things you are too young for…makeup being one of them. Not to worry though because you can still wear makeup at 16. It’s all about what is suitable for your age. You still want to look like yourself, just a little bit more enhanced. Read on to see our tips on how to wear suitable makeup at sweet 16.

When girls hit a certain age they start to think their eyebrows need to be plucked because they maybe too thick and bushy. Start off by tweezing or using a razorable trimmer to clean them up so they don’t look too overdone. You just want to clean around the shape and a little underneath to give them more of an arch. This helps to open up the eyes.

Next step is to discuse the acne. Tia used our mineral based Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation with a Foundation brush. The brush helps to limit bacteria and to even out the skin tone. The foundation is self -setting so it doesn’t need to be powdered.

To give the eyes a little dimension add some mascara. We used Lush Black Mascara. You can also choose to apply a soft shadow with a soft powder liner on the top if you like for added enhancement.

After you even out the skin it may look flat and dull so to add some color and glow back into the skin add some blush to the apples of the cheek with a Precision Blush Brush. Tia chose Whisper Apricot for our model Gabrielle for a peachy glow.

To finish off the look, apply Super Penny Gloss for a tint of color.

Marian Rivera has some topless scenes for Amaya

Pretty actress Marian Rivera will have to go topless when she shoots some scenes for

Amaya.The show portrays the lives of

Filipino ancestors during the pre-Hispanic period and Rivera’s scenes form part of the show’s goal of accuracy to historical details.

This was revealed by Director Mac Alejandre who said they tapped historian-experts from the University of the Philippines to get the details correctly

For her part, Rivera said she accepted the role of Amaya wholeheartedly aware that she will be doing some daring Scenes. She even gave a glimpse of the story line

in which she will be portraying a princess, a slave and a warrior.

The girlfriend of Dingdong Dantes is not new to doing topless scenes having done it in the past in Dyesebel.

Rivera will be working with hunk Sid Lucero who was last seen on GMA-7’s telefantasya Etheria, and veteran actor Gardo Versoza who plays a villain named Rajah Mangubat.

Andi Eigenmann accidentally ‘shot’ while taping series

Young actress Andi Eigenmann was hit by a blank bullet while taping

an action scene for ABS-CBN television series “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin.”

The incident happened last week in Marikina City after co-star Martin del Rosario accidentally pulled the trigger of his firearm.

Del Rosario recalled that when he heard the shot, he was initially not aware where it came from. He said he immediately apologized to the actress, who accepted the apology as she was aware that it was pure accident,

Eigenmann, who plays a soldier in the TV series, was rushed to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City by the production staff and actress Maja Salvador. She reportedly suffered a second-degree burn and is now resting at her Quezon City home.

Director Darnel Joy Villafor said Eigenmann and del Rosario will resume taping next week. He added that actors are aware of the risks involved when doing action sequence on the show and their safety is always top priority.

Sarah Geronimo, Cristine Reyes resolve differences

Singer Sarah Geronimo and actress Cristine Reyes finally buried the hatchet

after their much-publicized quarrel last year.

The singer said she wanted to end all conflict between her and Reyes so that both of them can move on. She did this by approaching Reyes in a dressing room after “ASAP Rocks” on Sunday.

She said she embraced Reyes while saying sorry during the emotional and touching encounter.

Geronimo also revealed that all is well between her and Rayver Cruz, Cristine’s present boyfriend and her rumored former partner.

For her part, Reyes also said sorry to Geronimo and her mother Divine for the unkind messages posted on her Twitter account over a remark the singer made in a rehearsal for the same show.

Geronimo admitted she had wanted to approach Reyes for a long time to explain that she never meant anything when she said the remark.

Bimby relates Lola Cory’s ‘visit’

TV host-actress Kris Aquino revealed in her official Twitter account that her youngest

child, James Yap Jr., popularly known as Bimby ‘saw’ his Lola Cory during the graduation of his kuya Joshua, Kris’s son with actor Phillip Salvador.

Kris and her sisters - Pinky Aquino-Abellada, Viel Aquino-Dee and Ballsy Aquino-Cruz – were all present during the graduation ceremony held at UP Film Center in Diliman, Quezon City when Bimby told them that he could see the late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino on stage.

Bimby said Lola Cory asked him and Joshua to kiss her on the cheek.

The Queen of All Media said she believes her mom really made her presence felt during the occasion

because Joshua has such a special place in her heart. She added that her mother was happy to see that Joshua is finally moving on to his next level of learning.

The TV-host actress also said she believes the late president kept

praying for Joshua and helping aid his development.

Kris is currently one of the judges of ABS-CBN’s “Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2” and hosting the game show “The Price is Right.”

UFC’s MMA Monopoly

Saturday, March 11, 2011, a day where no major promotion held a fight card,

will go down as one of the most historic days in Mixed Martial Arts. Major MMA news websites started breaking the news that soon blazed throughout twitter where, celebrities, fighters and fans alike speculated what would happen to the future of MMA.

UFC’s parent company Zuffa had purchased their closet competition, Strikeforce. This California based fight promotion boasts a roster that includes Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem. Dan Henderson, and Rolando “Jacare” Souza. Since the purchase, UFC president, Dana White says Strikeforce will continue to operate as a separate

entity. I believe that it’s more of a “when” than an “if” for Strikeforce to eventually dissolve into the UFC. After all, that’s what Zuffa did when they bought Pride FC and WEC. The question is how long and who’ll be affected.

Here are my pros and cons about Zuffa’s purchase of Strikeforce.

PRO: Super Fights. As a fan, how can you not be excited by the addition of Overeem, Emelianko and Bigfoot Silva to UFC’s Heavyweight Roster. Plus there’s Gilbert Melendez to the Lightweight Division. It may not happen until later, if at all, but dream fights are now closer to reality.

CON: Female Fighters. This is an absolute blow to Women’s MMA. Dana White has said he won’t promote female fights due to the lack of quality women fighters. Strkeforce not only gave Gina Carano a place to fight, but also introduced us to fighters like Cyborg Santos and Miesha Tate. It would be a shame not to see them fight on TV or pay per view.

PRO: Goodbye Strikeforce Announcing Team. Mauro Renallo and Frank Shammrock are terrible. Plain and simple. Bas Rutten should have been behind the desk from the moment they started. To never have to sit through Renallo’s bad jokes or Shammrocks butchering of the English language is a blessing.

CON: Dana’s Hate List. Dana White isn’t afraid to let

people know who he has distain for. Unfortunately that distain includes fighters like Paul Daley, Josh Barnett and Fedor’s management team, M1. We most likely won’t see these fighters in the UFC.

PRO: One fight card, one night. I’ve never been a fan of UFC and Strikeforce putting on fight cards at the same time. Sure I can PVR a card, but I like to watch fights live. Now we know for sure, they won’t try to compete for the same viewers now that they are owned by the same company.

CON: Fighter Salaries. Unfortunately the fighters will be the biggest losers out of this deal. Fewer and fewer high profile promotions with deep pockets means Zuffa holds all the chips. They’ll make the deal, while the fighter and his management either

take it, or fight regional for much lesser pay.

PRO: Moving Fighters. For as long as Zuffa will run Strikeforce as a separate entity, I’d like to see them move some UFC fighters over to give its divisions and the fighters themselves a much need boost. Rich Franklin would be the first one I move over.

By purchasing Strikeforce, Zuffa reminds the public that the UFC is the premier MMA organization in the world. As the NFL is for football, MLB is for baseball and the NHL is for hockey. It remains to be seen if this move will be good in the long run for the mixed martial arts, but the blazing success the UFC has seen since 2004 shows that their track record is pretty good. As a fan, I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.

Updated Discover Canada citizenship study guide now available

Vancouver, March 14, 2011 — The popular citizenship study guide, Discover Canada:

the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, has been updated and is now available, Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, announced today.

The updated study guide further strengthens its content on common Canadian values such as freedom, democracy, human rights, the rule of law and the equality of men and women. It promotes to immigrants and Canadian citizens alike a greater understanding of Canada ’s history, values, symbols and important Canadian institutions, such as Parliament and the Crown. It also highlights the contribution of ethnic and cultural communities in shaping our Canadian identity and the sacrifices made by Canada ’s veterans for our country.

“Discover Canada has been an immensely popular publication among newcomers and established Canadians,” Minister Kenney said. “The guide is being read by a wide variety of people from citizenship applicants to students and families. And it has sparked a national conversation about who we are as Canadians.”

The Discover Canada update contains everything from the previous release and more. Changes to the guide include:

• A new pull-out box called Becoming Canadian which emphasizes that a newcomer has a responsibility to embrace Canadian democratic principles and that past experiences in warfare or conflict do not justify bringing violent, extreme or hateful prejudices to Canada.

• Recognition that gay and lesbian Canadians enjoy the full protection of and equal treatment under the law, including access to civil marriage.

• The addition of forced marriage among the practices that are not tolerated in Canada .

• Additions to the section on the War of 1812, which celebrates its bicentennial next year. The

section has been expanded to include more context on the conflict and its importance in shaping Canada .

• A revamped Modern Canada section including new headings, more content about trade and economic growth, and more examples of Canada ’s outstanding cultural figures.

“We expect people who want to become Canadians to have a good understanding of their rights and responsibilities, and the values and institutions that are rooted in Canada ’s history,” Minister Kenney said. “This study guide has strengthened the value of Canadian citizenship.”

The comprehensive guide for Canadian citizenship was originally launched on November 12, 2009. In developing the original Discover Canada study guide, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) consulted with a panel of prominent Canadians, including public figures, authors and historians. It had also been reviewed by well-known organizations involved in citizenship promotion, such as the Historica-Dominion Institute, the Association of Francophone and Acadian Communities and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

Discover Canada is the official study guide for the citizenship test. The test is used to assess whether or not citizenship applicants meet the knowledge of Canada requirement for citizenship meaning that the applicant can demonstrate an adequate knowledge of Canada , and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Additional questions will be added to the citizenship test over time to cover the new material in the study guide. For now, applicants can study any copy of Discover Canada study guide issued by the Government of Canada since November 12, 2009.

Discover Canada is part of CIC’s Citizenship Action Plan that aims to strengthen the value of Canadian citizenship, including combating residency and citizenship fraud, clarifying the language requirement for citizenship, and

ongoing measures to strengthen the integrity of the citizenship knowledge test. The action plan has also resulted in enhancements to citizenship ceremonies and educational resources such as games in the Teacher and Youth Corner on the CIC website.

Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship can be downloaded or ordered from the CIC website at www.cic.gc.ca.

pagtitipong kung tawagin ay fiesta o pistang bayan?A festival is an event, usually and ordinarily staged by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community and the festival. Among many religions, a feast is a set of celebrations in honor of God or gods. A feast and a festival are historically interchangeable.

Like in any other countries, holidays and festivals are among the most important aspects of Icelandic culture. They mirror not only Iceland’s character but also that of its people in general. Many Icelanders await and prepare for these lavish celebrations with reverence and anticipation.

An Age-Old CustomIn Iceland, as in any other

country, a combination of nature, folklore, religious beliefs, socioeconomic factors, and history

influences every celebration. However, it is the tenacious adherence of many Icelanders to their ancient customs—which date back to Iceland’s pre-Christian, heathen history—that best characterizes their festivals such as Þorrablot (Thorrablot).

A Feast of Traditional Viking Food

One of the most awaited Icelandic event is Þorrablot, ‘The Blessing of Þorri,’ which commences on the first day of Þorri, the fourth month of Icelandic Winter. In standard calendar, it always begins on a Friday between the 19th and the 25th of January and ends on a Saturday between the 18th and the 24th of February. The highlight of this month-long annual festivity is the consumption of traditional Viking food. These delicacies include svið (boiled lamb’s head), hákarl (putrefied Greenlandic shark meat), skyr (yogurt made with ‘rennet’ [a dried extract

made from the stomach lining of hoofed mammals such as cattle, sheep, and goats]), flatkokur (flat, thin rye breads eaten with butter), hardfiskur (dried fish, eaten with butter), lifrarpylsa (pudding made out of lamb’s liver), and brennivín (an alcoholic beverage distilled from potatoes and flavored with the seeds of caraway herb).

The diet and eating habits of the Icelandic people, like those of many other nationalities, have largely changed in the passing of time, so it is unsurprising to know that many Icelanders now eat food prepared in the old fashion only during festivals.

Tracing the OriginMany Icelandic historians say

that the earliest extant reference to the word Þorrablot can be found in the late-fourteenth-century Old Icelandic collection of manuscript Flateyjarbók, (the Flatey book). According to the book, a certain King Þorri held a festive offering every late Winter to ask the deities to spare his kingdom from the harshness of the freezing season. Thus, many people believe that Icelandic Winter’s fourth month, Þorri (Thorri)—when the season is at its mildest—was named after the said king, who started the

festival in the first place. Through the passing of time, Icelanders eventually came to regard the king as an Icelandic Winter god. To other people, however, Þorrablot means ‘Feast of Thor’—an ancient feast originally celebrated back during Iceland’s pagan times in honor of the Norse god Thor.

Celebrating in the Modern DayWhatever its real origin,

Þorrablot to this day remains a standard part of the Icelandic social calendar, and many neighboring countries like Denmark, Greenland, Norway, and Sweden it has even been adopted it.

As festivities take place in Winter, most of the food served are preserved in some way—dried, pickled in whey, putrefied, salted, or smoked. And amidst this food galore are children playing traditional games, dancing, singing Old Icelandic songs, and heavy drinking (especially that

brennivín and other alcoholic beverages are, in Winter, ideal for warming the body and stirring the spirits).

Maria Aragon meets Lea Salonga, performs “Part of your world.”

YouTube singing sensation Maria Aragon impressed her idol singer-actress

Lea Salonga when the two met each other at The Inn at the Forks last March 17. Aragon, now also known as Baby Gaga due to her video rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way,” performed an acapella rendition for Salonga who asked her to sing “Part Of Your World,” which the latter

said she once used as an audition piece.

The Tony winner said it was a beautiful performance when asked about Aragon’s acapella rendition. She even tweeted excitedly about her meeting with the young Filipino-Canadian singer and also tagged a link to her “Born this way” video.

Rice Bowl chefs cooking up traditional Filipino dishes on Breakfast Television

Up early on Wednesday morning at CityTV’s Breakfast Television

studios at the Forks, Chef Harry and Chef JV from the Rice Bowl Restaurant were cooking Filipino dishes. Overseeing the culinary production was was Jeremy John, co-host Breakfast Television while the production crew waited in quiet anticipation

to dig their forks into the dishes that were being prepared. The entire production studio smelled delicious with the smell of tocino and fresh lumpia in the air.

Chef Harry and Chef JV demonstrated how to prepare and cook lumpia (Filipino springrolls) while showing off other dishes that are served at Rice Bowl

Restaurant. Those traditional Filipino dishes included a breakfast staple, tocilog. Other dishes on display were healthy servings of caldareta, kare-kare and pinakbet.

MELBOURNE - the “World’s Best Sport City”

Welcome to Melbourne - the bustling capital of Victoria, the smallest

continental state of Australia.With a cosmopolitan

population of 4 million including the myriad ethnic communities (it has the largest “Greek” community on the planet outside of Greece and 24,570 Filipinos), Melbourne is big on everything - “culture and arts, Victoria era buildings, high fashion, luxuriant parks, and friendly, sports-minded people”.

Named in honour of Lord Melbourne, once the Prime Minister of England, Melbourne was founded by free settlers, not convicts. The city evolved from its pastoral beginnings on the banks of the Yarra River, city’s main waterway, until the mid 1800’s when the discovery of gold ushered in sudden wealth to Melbourne and with it an influx of migrants from all over the world.

Melbourne is easy to explore. All the city’s places

of interest are on or adjacent to the “Golden Mile”, the heart of the metropolis and home to government and commercial hub, shopping district, main hotels, and theatres.

A motorcoach ride through the bay suburbs past through beautiful residential areas of Victorian homes make it easy to get to know the wonder that is Melbourne. The city is also home to world’s largest tram network and could be an alternative means to explore its sites.

One of the city’s notable sights is the ornate Princess Theatre, built in 1882 for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, and regarded as Melbourne’s home for international musical productions.

We drove through one of the most recognizable landmarks of Melbourne, the Flinders Street Station, the central railway station at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets where the “meeting under the clocks” has

become a Melbourne cultural institution.

A must-see is the Fitzroy Gardens, the 19th century landscaped gardens laid out across 64 acres with large formal garden beds, walking paths, a superb collection of trees, a conservatory fresh with blooms, and the famous cottage that was once the home of Capt. James Cook.

A permanent and lasting memory to the ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) spirit, the men and women of Victoria who served and those who died in the Great War, is the Shrine of Remembrance, designed with a ray of sunlight falling on the Stone of Remembrance to illuminate the word LOVE at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the exact moment of the armistice ending World War I.

Melbourne has two world-class observation decks, the Melbourne 360 degree Observation Deck (opened in 1994) on the 55th floor of the landmark Rialto Tower and the Eureka Skydeck 88 sitting atop the Eureka Tower, the world’s tallest residential tower, opened in 2007. Both offer awe-inspiring view of the entire city and suburbs. Eureka Skydeck’s lifts are the fastest in the southern hemisphere traveling at more than 9 meters per second.

Ranked in 2009 as the “World’s Best Sport City”, the host city for the 1956 Olympic Games along with 2006 Commonwealth Games, Melbourne is home to three major annual international sporting events: the Australian Tennis Open (one of the 4 Grand Slams tennis tournaments in the world), the Melbourne Cup (horse racing), and the Australian Grand Prix (Formula One). Intensely popular are the “Aussie Rules” (AFL) Football and cricket.
