Art and Design Lesson Plans
Art and Design Lead Lesson 1/4
60 mins
Objectives:
I am learning to:
· observe rainforest animals carefully
· draw animals using only lines
Outcomes:
Pupils will:
· choose several rainforest animals to study
· draw the animals from photos, using line only
· keep looking at the animal repeatedly while drawing
Success Criteria:
Remember to:
· choose animals that interest me
· draw the shapes of the animal in line only
· keep looking at the animal while you draw
Resources required:
· Good selection of photos of Amazon rainforest animals/birds/insects/fish
· Sketchbooks/cartridge paper
· Soft pencils/graphite
· View finders (thick paper or card frames about 10cm square)
What to do
Look at images of some of the Amazonian animals. Choose an animal.
Try to:
· Use a view finder to focus on the animal and not be distracted by the surroundings.
· Draw the main shapes of an animal in line only. One technique is to look only at the outside shape and draw it.
· Next complete any further shapes within – e.g. the outside shape of a frog followed by the details of mouth, eyes, etc.
You will need to use line only as you are going to use your drawings to make prints eventually.
Plenary
There is not right or wrong drawing - this has been about learning to look carefully and see what marks can be made from looking. Evaluate successes.
Easier
Choose a simpler shaped animal with minimal textures to work from.
Challenge
Try drawing the textures on the animal in lines. Can you explain how repeating the drawings feels and if it is improving with repetition?
