Case 648B Information
Date: 17th May 2005Location: Q.E. Science Lab 14Event occurred 21:45Description A person, identity unknown, was caught on camera breaking into
the school science lab, where secretly the evil, potentially
fatal disease – hairy eye, was being tested under governmental instruction.
The case was broken open using a maths protractor and metre stick. The job was obviously done by a professional. The only key is a trail of smarties left at the scene and a note scrawled on a shabby piece of blotting paper.
Case Information
Witness Security Guard – sleeping on duty. Believes he caught sight of one of the suspects – wearing a long jacket covering a blue jumper with a yellow logo on the right hand side. Wording unknown. Approximate height – that of a 10-11 year old.
Message on blotting paper – “You will never catch me, I am invincible”
Case Clues
• Unknown to the criminal, they left an important clue. At the vital moment, when leaving the premises via a third storey window, a measuring jug containing a combination of water and vinegar was poured onto the paper towel leaving behind the evidence that could put them on detention for eternity. The pen was not left at the scene.
• Action – Find the pen, this will
provide us with the vital clue
Your mission, should you choose to accept it ….
• To identify the criminal• To use your science skills and understanding to
plan an investigation which will provide you with the vital evidence
• Make an accusation and arrest the criminal.
ONLY TURN THE PAGE IF YOU ACCEPT THE MISSION
Mission Update
• We have narrowed the chase down to 8 possible children who are all in Year 6 at Landscore Primary School (the blue jumper gave this away)
• We have noticed that when water/vinegar touches ink and blotting paper, something interesting occurs. We have the original blotting paper and this shows the interesting clue. Agent Smith will show you evidence bag 14.
• We have taken 8 possible pens from pencil cases during a daring undercover break time raid. We hope that one of these pens will belong to the criminal.
The suspects …….• A Nathan Staite• B Cara Ripley• C Holly Densham• D Alex Westcott• E Trystan Oldfield• F Clarissa Raymont• G Sean Potter• H Jasmine Wright
It is essential that we catch this individual …….
The Investigation ….
• Equipment – 200 ml water, vinegar, paper clips, straws, eight strips of blotting paper, eight pens labelled (A to H)
• Carry out a fair test – we don’t want the investigation to fall apart because we’re being sloppy …
• Objective – Find a way of generating the pattern shown on evidence bag 14 – if we have this, then we have the criminal.
• Work in Agent Teams of 4 – keep those clues close to your chest. We don’t want this to appear in the newspaper, it would be a national tragedy.
• Produce a case report, showing the criminal, the process that you took to find the evidence and your evidence with a suitable conclusion.
