Fats And CholesterolYour body needs a certain amount ofholesterol to work properly, but not too

much. If there is too much cholesterol inyour blood it can build up on the sides

f your arteries, narrowing them andncreasing your risk of a heart attack ortroke.

Your body uses saturated fat to makeholesterol. So, the best way to reduceholesterol is by eating less saturatedat. A diet that is rich in unsaturated fatsan help lower the levels of unwantedholesterol even further.

Other fats, known as triglycerides, ppear to be linked to an increased riskf heart attack. Eating too much re nedarbohydrate, such as sugar, contributeso high triglyceride levels, as does

drinking too much alcohol.s all cholesterol bad?

Not all cholesterol in the blood is bad.Cholesterol is carried by the blood inwo main forms: LDL (low densityipoprotein) and HDL (high densityipoprotein).

LDL is the main carrier of harmfulholesterol to your arteries – where itan build up and cause narrowing.

HDL picks up excess cholesterol in therteries and takes it away.

So the ideal situation is to have a lowLDL level and a high HDL level.Eat your way to lower cholesterolevels

One of the best ways to keep yourholesterol levels in check is to enjoy a

balanced diet. This means eating plentyof fruit and vegetables, with starchywholegrain foods and low levels ofsaturated fat.

Try to eat fish at least 2-3 times aweek. White fish is low in fat andhigh in vitamins and minerals. Oilyfish is rich in Omega-3 essentialfatty acids which may help reduce

blood pressure, reduce the tendencyof blood to clot, regulate the rhythmof your heart beat and reducetriglyceride levels.Always choose lean meats, poultry(without the skin), and lower-fat dairyfoods instead of the fatty meats andfull-fat dairy products. When cooking, remove any visible fat from meat andskim off the fat from sauces, gravy andcasseroles.Avoid saturated fats found in butter, ghee, lard, full-fat dairy foods andanimal products. Replace them with

products high in monounsaturated fatsuch as rapeseed and olive oil, or high in

polyunsaturated fats such as sun owerand corn oil.Oats, beans, nuts and soya are also goodchoices.Simple cooking methods to keep foodslow in fat

Some of the unwanted fat that we eatcomes from the cooking oils we usewhen frying. Because of this, it is best touse other methods of cooking that don’tneed cooking oil:

    • Instead of frying foods, steam boil, poach, grill, bake, microwave barbecue or stir-fry them.

    • Use only a small amount of oil whe

cooking and choose brands high i polyunsaturated or monounsaturatefat. Alternatively, try cooking iwine, water or tomato juice.

    • Measure oil using a teaspoon otablespoon rather than just pourinit into the saucepan. Trim meat oall visible fat and remove skin from

poultry before cooking. The way we cook can also help to reducefat:• by preparing curries and stews i

advance and chilling them overnightunwanted fat becomes solid and ca

be removed• when grilling or roasting meat, us

a trivet which allows the fat to draioff

    • certain dishes such as dhals, ca be made without using oil. Carefufrying of the ingredients and spicetogether removes the need for oil.

And nally, we can replace fattingredients and salt with healthiealternatives:• try substituting low-fat yoghurt o

low-fat fromage frais in recipes thacall for cream. Use vegetable pureeas sauces

    • herbs, spices, pepper, lemon juiceor vinegar add avour and are gooalternatives to salt.

'Ghee' And Its Many Bene tsDoing so creates peroxides and other freeadicals. Ghee has a very high smokeoint and doesn't burn easily duringooking. Ghee has stable saturatedonds and so is lot less likely to form the

dangerous free radicals when cooking.Ghee's short chain of fatty acids are alsometabolized very readily by the body.Lab studies have shown ghee to reduceholesterol both in the serum andntestine. It does it by triggering anncreased secretion of biliary lipids. Ghees also good for nerves and brain. It helpsontrol eye pressure and is bene cialo glaucoma patients. Ghee is most

notably said to stimulate the secretion

f stomach acids to help with digestion, while other fats, such as butter and oils,

slow down the digestive process and cansit heavy in the stomach. Ghee is richwith antioxidants and acts as an aid inthe absorption of vitamins and mineralsfrom other foods, serving to strengthenthe immune system. A high concentrationof butyric acid, a fatty acid that containsanti-viral properties, is believed to inhibitthe growth of cancerous tumors. It is good for treatment of burns.According to Ayurveda ghee promotes

learning and increased memory retentionWhile in a healthy person consuminghee may reduce your cholesterol onot affect it, it is not advised for peoplealready suffering from high cholesterol. It is safer than butter. Now you understandhow the Punjabis have tonnes of gheand still are tter. It has been used iIndian medicinal practice to help withulcers, constipation, and the promotionof healthy eyes and skin.

Ghee is composed almost entirely of saturated fat. When cooking, it can be unhealthy to heat polyunsaturated oils such asvegetable oils to high temperatures.

Causes Of PancreatitisPancreatitis is not a diagnosis most arewell aware of prior to ever developinghe ailment, as for some reason it isn’tublicized that often, even though ithould be. Pancreatitis can be fatal if not

reated quickly, and it can also be lifehanging if yours is a chronic versionversus a one off acute episode. It occurswhen the pancreas is overworked tryingo breakdown all of your foods and

medications that you ingest. Think aboutverything you consume, from pills toocktails, to fatty foods, all have to gohrough the pancreas. It has a pretty bigob in the digestive cycle, and when itsn’t functioning as it should, it beginso be attacked by its own enzymesausing extreme pain and requiring

hospitalization in most cases.t’s reported that 7 out of every 10atients develop the illness from alcoholonsumption, but there are other reasonsne can become ill from pancreatitis as

well. Review the causes of pancreatitisnd if you ever feel extreme stomachain, vomiting, and develop a feverlease get to your medical provider’sf ce at once.. Genetics

There are patients with pancreatitis thatimply developed it on a hereditaryasis. If your mother suffers from it,

here is a good chance you at some pointmay as well. Fortunately, most know ift is already common in their familieso catch it before it gets too problematicnd seek a specialist treatment plan earlyn life.. Alcohol

You can’t talk about the pancreas withoutmentioning alcohol; the two simply gohand in hand. Those drinks you poundedin your 20’s? They can come back tohaunt you at some point, so always drink

with caution and drink plenty of water toavoid pancreas issues whilst consumingcocktails of any sort.3. Prior SurgeriesThis isn’t hugely popular as far as diagnosesare concerned, but there are a number of

patients that have obtained the disorder asa result of having a previous surgery. Oftenthese patients will only develop an acuteversion of the illness versus the full blownchronic episodes while their bodies arehealing from the surgery.4. Poor DietYou are what you eat, and your pancreaswill re ect that as you get older. Themore fatty foods you put into your body, the more your pancreas has to work extrahard to decompose them. Pancreatitiscan be controlled often by changing yourdiet in just a matter of weeks.5. GallstonesUsually upon being diagnosed with

pancreatitis, your doctor will wantimaging tests completed to see if youhave gallstones that could be causingyour pancreatitis. Most patients with

    pancreatitis have their gallbladders

removed as a precautionary measure toavoid further attacks.6. MedicationsIf you are someone that pops over thecounter meds like candy, be warned thatit could result in effecting your pancreas.Prescription medications can also take

time for the pancreas to break down, soalways avoid taking medications as a lasresort to xing your illnesses if possible7. SmokingSmokers are prone to develop ton

of ailments including cancer, an pancreatitis. If you combine smokinwith drinking and taking medicationyou are essentially a ticking pancreatititime bomb. Cut back or totally stosmoking as soon as possible to stargaining better health.8. Elevated CalciumIf your calcium levels are too highyou could have a condition calle“hypercalcemia” which can also caus

pancreatitis. It can be as a result of parathyroid gland that is overactiveOften, your medical provider has thability to run some tests and detect if thiis the case for your pancreas issues.9. Drug Abuse

Not surprisingly, if you abuse streedrugs you will quickly deterioratyour pancreas; among other organsHopefully, your pancreatitis isn’t too fagone that you can make some changeand start to feel better and get your lif

back. The plus side of this version oself-induced pancreatitis is that once th

patient avoids drugs their bodies beginrepairing themselves rather quickly.

    10. Cystic FibrosisThose with cystic brosis are all tofamiliar with their pancreas and thdangers it can bring if it’s not healthyMany develop pancreatitis both thacute and the chronic versions witcystic brosis as a possible side effect.

during cardiac surgery. The study, conducted on lab mice, foundhat rodents who were administered

diallyl sul de following a heart attackuffered 61-percent less risk of heartdamage. A supporting study by theGerman Commission E (which isimilar to the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration), notes that red bloodells are able to transform garlic sulfurnto hydrogen sul de gas, which dilateslood vessels to safely regulate bloodressure and lower the chances of

developing heart disease.2. Protects BonesFindings from a lengthy study conducted

jointly by scientists at University ofEast Anglia and King’s College, both

in London, claim that female diets highin allium-rich vegetables, like garlic, suffered reduced risk of osteoarthritis. The study monitored a group of 1000healthy, twins, and noted that the womenwho ate allium-rich veggies (i.e., garlicshallots, onions, and leeks) regularlywere less likely to develop osteoarthritis. The same study also shows promise forusing allium compounds sourced fromvegetables to treat osteoarthritis patients.3. Anti-in ammatory PropertiesDid you know that garlic is also a powerfulanti-in ammatory? Speci cally, garlicoil is noted as a potent treatment for soremuscles and painfully in amed jointswhen the oil is massaged directly intothe affected area.Research published in the journal, Foodand Chemical Toxicology, outlined theshort-term effects of raw garlic extractsfor reducing in ammation, due to the pro-in ammatory cytokines in raw garlic. The study showed positive outcomes,

but cautions that heating garlic extractslowered the anti-in ammatory prowess.4. Banish that Anti-Fungal Itch

Many would never dream of puttingraw garlic on a case of athlete’s foot, however, multiple studies claim thatamong its many bene ts, garlic alsohas anti-fungal properties and is ableto banish fungus overgrowth. The ndings, published inthe journal Cancer Prevention Researchmonitored the dietary habits of 1,424 lungcancer patients and 4,543 healthy adults. The research discovered that thoshealthy adults who consumed garlitwice per week reduced their lung cancerisk by 44-percent. Further conclusionindicate that raw garlic had a doseresponse effect on the patients witlung cancer. This means that garlic maycontain chemo-preventive propertieand be effective in the future treatmenof lung cancer.6. Protects the BrainMany people associate sh with smarty

pants and brain protection. However, astudy from the Medical University oSouth Carolina (MUSC), suggests tha

baking that sh with a few cloves ogarlic might help destroy brain cance

cells (or glioblastomas, a type of fata brain tumor) and protect the brain frommalignant brain tumors. The MUSC scientists, who eventuall

published their ndings in the journaCancer, pinpointed 3 speci c organosulfur compounds in garlic—known aDAS, DADS and DATS—which had the

Best Way To Brush Teeth Still UnknownEvery morning when you brush youreeth, do you remember your dentist'sdvice? No worries as even he may be

wrong about the best way to brush.According to new a research by UniversityCollege London, the advice on howwe should brush our teeth from dentalssociations and toothpaste companies isunacceptably inconsistent".

The study looked at the brushing advicegiven by dental associations across 10ountries, toothpaste and toothbrushompanies and in dental textbooks.

The researchers found no clear consensusetween the various sources, and a "worrying"

lack of agreement between advice from dentalassociations compared with dental textbooks."The public needs to have soundinformation on the best method to brushtheir teeth," said Aubrey Sheiham, emeritus

professor of dental public health at UCL.The most commonly-recommendedtechnique involves gently jiggling the

brush back and forth in small motions, with the intention of shaking loose anyfood particles, plaque and bacteria. However, no large-scale studies haveever shown this method to be any more

effective than basic scrubbing."Brush gently with a simple horizontal

scrubbing motion, with the brush at a 45degree angle to get to the dental plaque,Sheiham advised. To avoid brushing too hard, hold th

brush with a pencil grip rather than a stThis simple method is perfectly effectiveat keeping your gums healthy. There is little point in brushing afteeating sweets or sugary drinks to preventooth decay."It takes bacteria from food about twminutes to start producing acid, so if you

brush your teeth a few minutes after eating

sugary foods, the acid will have damagedthe enamel," researchers claimed.

had never seen my mother so hassledwith her four children about theirupbringing as mothers today are withheir one child. I had also often heardtories from my grandmother about howffortlessly her children grew up without

her conscious effort when she was busywith her household chores from grindingwheat daily to spinning her charkhao make thread for weaving blankets.Apart from a big house, she also had aarge farm. Every noon, she had to takeackets of food and a bucket of lassior her husband who was working onhe elds. unequipped with the wisdom for their

What is it that troubles the modern parent? Why this uneasiness?Of course, one need not delve into whathas changed. It is also obvious thatcommerce is overriding compassion.Over time, industrialisation led to intensemechanisation and overtly resulting inan overdose of materialism. We have

become so dependent on gadgets thatwe have moved away from nature andlost our natural capabilities. We haveforgotten that Nature nurtures. It seems that the mothers of today havelost that inner connect that is neededto listen to her little child. I once met ayoung mother with her infant on her lap,who was on the opposite seat in a trainon a long journey. The baby was uneasyand crying uncontrollably and the motherwas equally uneasy and embarrassed thatshe was unable to make the baby quiet.I looked at the mother gently conveying

to her that this was normal and asked herwhy the baby was crying. She said she

had no clue. The mother was still holdingthe baby while I spoke to her. The baby

began to look at me. I looked into th baby’s eyes. The baby was tired. I shumy eyes, opened them, shut them againand did this a couple of times. Soon the

baby’s eyelids slowly began to droopand within seconds, the baby fell asleepThe young mother thought I did sommagic. I assured her that it was not so andthat she should have just had a look at the
