Fiji Airways Banks Huge Prot AndRewards Employees

Fiji Airways has only seven jets, threeA330-200 wide bodies and four singleaisle Boeing 737s, but has just shamedts much larger Australian and NZ peer

airlines with massive prots and worker

bonuses. On top of that the man who was inharge as CEO, Stefan Pichler, has

been snatched from his rich and idyllicojourn in that South Seas paradise to

become CEO of the airBerlin group (onehird owned by Etihad).

Pichler has to have been the lowestkey senior airline gure ever to workuccessfully in Australia, having been

Virgin Blue’s chief commercial ofcerand deputy CEO in 2006 and 2007 whent was raking in fabulous double digit

margins that have eluded Qantas, andVirgin Australia, for the duration of theirespectively long and short histories.

Pichler was never in the spotlight, andt is reasonable to say that from a media

and analyst perspective didn’t even riseo the level of being ‘Stefan Who?’ Mr

Pichler was always a lonely gure atndustry events, and not famous for

making small talk. But he clearly has amidas touch, and his recruitment into theEtihad ‘empire’ is more than fascinatinggiven his track record.Meanwhile, the question must be, how

did Fiji Airways make a prot beforencome tax of $65.2m compared toa prot before income tax of $8.3mor the nine-month period ended 31st

December 2013? It quite clearly wasn’tbeing harmed by competition from AirNew Zealand or Jetstar, both coming at itrom somewhat different directions.

No doubt, some answers might comerom Qantas, Virgin and Air NZ

overnight, and no doubt, Fijian labourelations, pay rates, and the sheerimplicity of having a superb tourism

product to sell, for which people wouldpart with a reasonable level of air fareswill be a part of such explanations. The Fiji dollar was worth 63 Australianents (up strongly in recent times) whichs both a help and hindrance when itomes to the push and pull between lessxpensive labour and fuel and capitalosts. Fiji Airways is also part of thearger Air Pacic group, which includesubstantial tourism industry interests,

although on the published gures, it washe airline that carried this result, not theesorts.

n typical relaxed Fijian style, the actualnancial results ling hadn’t even

appeared on the airline’s web site, nor inthe news media, as of late this afternoonAustralian time, so Plane Talking isgoing to have to reprint a large slab out ofthe PR announcement, including the bitabout non-management workers getting$F3000 bonuses and managementexecutives $F7000 each. But before that, here is an extract froman airBerlin press release on 3 Novemberlast year about Herr Pichler’s career, sofar. He joins from Fiji Airways, where he has

been leading a turnaround programmeto return the carrier, formerly AirPacic, to protability. Fiji Airwaysrecently reported its best ever rst-half

protability and is on course to deliverrecord-breaking full year results. StefanPichler is also currently Chairman ofTourism Fiji, which accounts for 38 percent of the nation’s GDP.Before joining Fiji Airways, he wasManaging Director & Chief Executiveof Jazeera Airways, where his successfulturnaround programme led to 13consecutive quarters of prots, with

industry-leading margins of 25.6 percent in 2011 and 30.2 per cent in 2012.Prior to that, he was Chief CommercialOfcer and Deputy CEO of Virgin BlueAirlines, which became one of the most

protable global airlines in 2006 and2007, with double-digit post tax margins. He also launched V Australia, which heserved as Chairman until 2009.He was Chairman and Chief Executiveof Thomas Cook AG earlier on andalso held various senior management

     positions at Lufthansa, culminating

in a role as Chief Commercial Ofcerand Member of the Executive Board,

accountable for sales and marketworldwide. And here is an edited version of nancial announcement.Air Pacic Ltd, trading as the Airways Group, today announced nancial results for the scal year en31 December 2014. Mr. Nalin PaChairman of the Board of DirectorsAir Pacifc Ltd., trading as Fiji Airwsaid the airline and its consolidagroup (Fiji Airways Group) made recoperating prots. The Group compr

Guest Service FeeThe idea of implementing a guest serviceee on tourists visiting Fiji will notmprove services but make holidaying inhe country very expensive.

That's the view of Fiji Hoteliers andTourism Association president DixonSeeto as the parliamentary StandingCommittee on Economic Affairs calledor extensive consultation and research

on the tourism industry, before makingany recommendations to Parliament ona petition from more than 600 tourismworkers asking for a service fee to beharged to guests for the purpose ofupplementing the incomes of tourism

workers in Fiji. And if this service fee is implemented,Mr Seeto warned Fiji could lose visitors. He said levying a guest service fee on

ourists would affect the more than00,000 people who depended on thendustry either directly or indirectly.Service fees do not result in greaterervice," he said.Service fee is meant to improve service

not so much income because the workers

in the hotel industry are paid far abovethe minimum rates of the designatedwages council."And also the association is currentlytalking to the union about a productivity

payment where people are rewarded withextra pay for productivity and service."We are already being charged theService Turnover Tax which is alreadythere and if you're going to put somethingon top of it, it will make the cost ofholidays very prohibitive and what willhappen is that we will have less visitorsif it gets too expensive and you will havevery little to share."Committee chairman Balmindar Singhsaid all stakeholders would be consulted

before making any decisions.Mr Singh said the committee would have

open consultation."We will go down to all the relevant

    stakeholders and get their feedbacks,"said.Mr Singh said it was important for committee to consult both the tourworkers and those who employ themCommittee member Bill Gavoka saidguest service fee will motivate workto come to work every day thus reducabsenteeism rates.Mr Seeto said those making decisishould look at the bigger picture encourage more people into employmFact le:- Fiji is not an expensive holiddestination;- Holidaying rates are competitcompared to other Pacic hotels;- More than 100,000 people employethe tourism sector;

against Australia forfeit their citizenship," MrAbbott said in a speech at the federal policeheadquarters in the capital, Canberra. So Australians, who take up arms

with terrorist groups, especially whileAustralian military personnel arengaged in Afghanistan and Iraq, haveided against our country. And should bereated accordingly," he said.

Hundreds Of Convicted Criminals Have VisaRevoked Under Migration Act Amendment

More than 200 bikies, drug trafckersand sex offenders have had their visasancelled in the past three months

and have started being deported fromAustralia. The number of cancellations is muchhigher than in recent years, becausemmigration Minister Peter Dutton now

has greater powers to revoke visas ofonvicted criminals.

Since December last year, 203 visas havebeen cancelled, a high rate of cancellationsompared to 372 revocations betweenuly 2011 and July 2014.

Mr Dutton said he would not apologiseor taking a tough approach.Frankly they're detracting from the

Australian society, not adding to it," he said.

They should be removed from ourhores as quickly as possible."Of the 203 people who have had their visasancelled since mid-December last year, 92

are living in immigration detention centres.Another 99 are serving sentences in prisonand 12 have already been deported.

Mr Dutton said an amendment to section501 of the Migration Act had increasedhis power to cancel visas."Essentially that provides for a mandatedarrangement for visas to be cancelledfor people who had a conviction of 12months or more imprisonment, or for

people who have been here on a visa andhave been convicted of a sexual offenceagainst a child," he said."It confers a power on the minister to, in thenational interest, decide that a visa should becancelled of somebody who, for example, had been involved in a serious crime."It may be that they've been involved intrafcking of illicit drugs, it may be thatthey've been involved in gang rapes orit may be that they've been involved in

sexual assaults of another nature."But some families are pleading with theGovernment to reconsider.Skye Mallon's mother, Joanne Gordon-Stables, had her visa cancelled.Ms Gordon-Stables has been jailedtwice for drug offences and is set to be

deported to New Zealand, where she not lived for nearly 40 years."She's lived in Australia all her without even realising she had a visa

be taken," Ms Mallon said."She was done for drug charges and was incarcerated for 12 months but oserved six months of that."She received a letter before she got saying that she was going to have visa cancelled."She's depressed; it really upsets her tshe won't be able to see her children.Mr Dutton said he would consiindividual cases, but would not many promises."My responsibility is to the Austra

people, to make sure that w

compassionate wherever needed, but we apply the law fairly and rmly," he s"If people have committed crimes againstcountry then their visas will be cancelledPeople who have had their vicancelled have 28 days to appeal decision.

How Your Tongue Determines Your OveraHealth

Have you ever pondered what yourdoctor is looking for when he or sheells you to open up and say “ahhhh”?

According to medical doctors the color,

exture, or abnormalities that show up onhe surface of your tongue say quite a lotabout your overall health and wellness. For instance, discolorations, patches,or changes in texture can indicateverything from a vitamin deciency to

a serious health condition, like Celiacdisease. Here are eight convincing reasons topay more attention to what’s inside yourmouth and on your tongue…

. Bumps and UlcersBumps, sores, and ulcers (i.e., cankerores) can appear on the surface or

around your tongue for many reasons. For instance, point to accidentally bitinghe tongue in your sleep as a main causeor lumps and bumps inside the mouthknown as bromas).

Cold sores (i.e., a form of herpes), cankerores, and inamed taste buds can all

become lingering sources of discomfort.n this case specialists recommend

gargling with baking soda and water, using an over-the-counter pain relievingoral ointment, or anti-viral medicationsas prescribed by your doctor (for herpes).

f pain and ulcers linger (or get worse)or more than 2 weeks, have your doctoror dentist inspect the area to see if it maybe a cancerous legion.2. RednessOftentimes, when your throat is raw,ed, and sore your tongue will followuit. However a red tongue often alsondicates a dry mouth (or dehydration) or

a vitamin deciency (i.e., low B12, iron,or even folic acid), if the tongue is alsowollen and itchy. In the case of vitamin

deciency, your doctor may recommendaking supplements or changing your

diet to increase essential nutrients.n severe cases, a red (or strawberryongue) can be a sign of scarlet fever, a

bacterial infection that often occurs inonjunction with strep throat and a really

high fever. In the case of strep, you’redoctor will prescribe antibiotics. Keep inmind that a red tongue may occur afterating crimson-colored foods (i.e., beets

or strawberries).3. White PatchesA white, patchy discoloration on theurface of your tongue may be as simple

as not cleaning the surface of yourongue thoroughly. To check, brush the

surface of your tongue lightly with yourtoothbrush, morning and evening whenyou brush your teeth to see if the whitedisappears.

If white patches linger, it may be adirect result of the medication you aretaking. For instance, certain antibiotics(i.e., for COPD, asthma, diabetes, orchemotherapy) which can cause anovergrowth of candida (or yeast) toappear as thrush on the surface of yourtongue. Use an anti-fungal mouth washto treat. If the white lingers or worsens, see your doctor. In some cases, white

patches may indicate leukoplakia, whichoccurs from tobacco or alcohol abuseand can develop into oral cancer.4. Raised Spots

Accordingly a lot of people suffer froma tongue that becomes raised in sections(often called a geographic tongue) as aresult of several chronic conditions— including psoriasis, diabetes, seborrheicdermatitis, celiac disease, and damagedue to chronic cigarette smoking. This type of dened, raised, inammationas map-like (hence the geographicreference), in which sections appearsmooth and become surrounded by raisedspots or borders, giving the surface ofthe tongue a variegated appearance and

causing sensitivity to hot or spicy foods.5. Hairy SurfaceIf you smoke, hairy tongue, or a tonguethat develops elongated strands ofkeratin (or cells that grow faster thanthe body can shed them) can take ona shocking tan to black discoloration. The discoloration occurs due to trapped

bacteria, most often due to smoking, poor oral health, or certain antibioticmedications. A bad taste and halitosismay also occur and require regular

brushing with a tongue scraper. If you don’t smoke, a whitened, hairy

tongue (a condition known as oral hairyleukoplakia) can occur with immuno-suppression (i.e., from Epstein-Barrvirus infection or HIV) or as a directresult of a yeast infection from usingantibiotics.6. Ridges, Bumps, or Indentations

A tongue that develops sudden ridg bumps, or scalloped edges is ofdue to the manner in which your tecome into contact with your tong

Oftentimes, pressure from the teeth wcause indentations on tongue, especiif you grind your teeth while you sleThese types of tongue markings typically harmless.Traumatic bromas (bumps or lesinside the mouth and on the tongoften occur along the bite line thickened ridges or smooth domes dua mouth trauma that causes collagenconnective tissue to accumulate at site of injury. In this case a biopsy m

be performed by your doctor to ensthe lesion isn’t cancerous.

    7. Tongue Webbing or StripesA white webbed, lacy or strippappearance over the surface of the tonis typical if you develop lichen planuchronic oral condition that results wthe immune system attacks cells in mouth.A lichen planus is common in middaged female patients as the conditoften accompanies candida (or yeinfections). While lichen planus is often harmful, your doctor may prescra topical steroid (i.e., uocinonide g

and scrape the tongue to diagnose  presence of a candida infection.8. Tongue FissuresMedical doctors describe a ssutongue as one with a long, jagged crdown the middle. While many peoplenaturally born with a ssured tonguothers can develop radiating ssu(or perpendicular cracks along the loaxis).According to specialists these ssuare usually quite normal as we and not at all harmful. However, ohygiene is a must with a ssu

tongue as food particles and bactecan accumulate inside deep ssucausing inammation and infectionthe tongue. To clean thoroughly, brgently with a soft toothbrush wheneyou brush your teeth and avoid stifoods.

breath and also raises the risk of a stroke.Researchers in Sweden followed 79,016adults between the ages of 45 and 83 whoompleted a detailed questionnaire aboutood and alcohol consumption in 1997.

After 12 years they found 7245 cases of AF.The study found an association betweenhigh alcohol consumption - denedas more than three drinks a day - and

increased risk of AF, and a similar pattern with binge drinking. These ndings mirrored previous research

but the researchers also detected a link

between the condition and moderateconsumption of wine and 'hard' liquor.Moderate drinking was dened as one tothree drinks per day.

No such link was found between moderateor binge drinking of beer and increased AFrisk, the research published in the Journalof the American College of Cardiologysaid.A further analysis combining the resultsof the Swedish research with six similarstudies indicated the risk of AF increasedeight per cent with each additional drink

per day. This work did not differentiate

between types of alcohol. The study raises questions about theories thata moderate amount of alcohol may actually

boost health, with red wine in particular said

to have a positive impact on the heart.Lead scientist Susanna Larssassociate professor at the KarolinInstitutet in Stockholm, said that wh

other studies have shown that lightmoderate alcohol consumption can benecial to the heart, it is importto balance these benets against

potential risk of developing AF."We have no explanation for the lackassociation with beer consumption," said."It is likely that beer is consumed mregularly during the week, wherwine and liquor is more often consumduring weekends only."Adverse effects of alcohol on atbrillation risk may be less pronoun

if alcohol consumption is spread out othe week compared with consumptionlarger amounts of alcohol during a fdays per week."

Steps To Combat Cold And Flu This SeasoThey’re back! Cold and inuenza virusesare invading homes, schools, and ofces, but did you know that you could steerlear of becoming ill this season? Here are

useful tips for combating colds and u.Eat HealthyEnjoying healthy portions of fruit, vegetables, lean protein, grains and milkproducts can help keep your immuneystem operating at its optimum ability.

Canadians should get their nutrition fromwhole foods instead of supplements.Keep Hands CleanAccording to a study, cold and u virusesan live on door handles, elevator buttons, hopping carts, and other high-touch

public places for a time period rangingrom a few minutes to 48 hours. One touch,

and these hardy viruses are hitching aide on your hands. The best way to avoid

getting sick, and stop the spread of illnesso others is to wash your hands with warm

water, and soap on a regular basis. Eightypercent of all infectious transmissions arehrough the hands. Lathering and rubbing

your hands with soap for 15 seconds – theame amount of time it would take you toecite ‘Happy Birthday’ twice - to remove

and kill any lurking germs and viruses.Use Alcohol-Based SanitizersCan’t nd a restroom to wash your hands?Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are yourbest back-up plan. Alcohol is a knownanti-microbial and it disrupts the biologyof the virus so it cannot infect you.

Choose a sanitizing gel, or a wipe thatcontains 62 to 70 percent ethanol, and usethe product in a quantity that will keepyour hands wet for at least 15 seconds. Ifyou can cover your hands and make themnice and wet, it will take 15 to 20 secondsto dry off and that’s enough time to killoff the majority of cold and u viruses.Stay AwayIf someone is sick, avoid them until they’re

better. It’s also a good idea not to share itemssuch as drinking glasses, eating utensils andtowels that the ill person has been using, and avoid handshakes and kissing until the

person’s cold or u subsides.ExerciseIf you want to avoid the snifes, it’s timeto put those exercise excuses to rest. There are many studies showing thatexercise helps strengthen the immune

system, and makes your body moreresilient. Just be careful to nd the rightexercise balance. You could weakenyour immune system if you workout toohard or too often. People who over trainand are always tired, can get sick, so ndthe middle ground where your trainingisn’t excessive, but just enough.Roll Up Your Sleeve Every year, more Canadians arehospitalized with inuenza-relatedcomplications. Skip the aches, pains anda potential ER visit by rolling up yourshirtsleeve. Everyone over the age of6 months should get a u shot. It’s also

imperative that children, pregnant womseniors and individuals with chroconditions such as diabetes, immsystem suppression, or heart disease

protected by the u shot because theyat a higher risk for inuenza-caucomplications like pneumonia.People often wrongly assume that immunization can spark the illness. Tu shot isn’t a live vaccine, so it cagive you the u.Use Disinfecting ProductsHave a sick family member in yhousehold? Wage war against the sprof cold or u viruses by using disinfectwipes in your cleaning routine. Ideally wthe infectious person touches somethinthe house, it should be cleaned. Try to dat least once or twice a day.Get Proper Shut-Eye

Here’s another reason to snuggle unyour duvet. A good night’s slumber help your immune system defend itagainst cold and u viruses. Adults shoget about 7 to 8 hours of consecutive sleDon’t SmokeSmokers are more likely to catch a cthan non-smokers. The respiratory tof smokers is already irritated, so theymore at risk for not only catching a co

but also developing complications suc bacterial pneumonia, tonsillitis and siinfections. If you want to lower ychances of feeling under the weather, nis the time to kick the cigarette habit.

How To Ease Muscle Pain After ExerciseFeeling achy after a vigorous workout? Here's why your muscles hurt and whatyou can do to ease the pain

. Hurts so goodYou might think of the aches you feel afterxercising as “good pain”—a virtuouseminder that you’re working hard to keep

your body in shape. The problem is thatven “good pain” is uncomfortable andan interfere with your everyday activities.

We turned to the experts to nd out whyour muscles ache after exercise—and whatwe can do to ease the hurt.2. Why we feel pain after exercise

The stiff, achy sensation you feel 24 hours ormore after exercising is known as delayedonset muscle soreness (DOMS), says Dr.anice Harvey, director of primary careport medicine at McMaster University’s

David Braley Sport and OrthopedicRehabilitation Clinic in Hamilton, Ont.DOMS is the result of injury to yourmuscle bers caused by excessive or newxercise. “The tiny tears signal the immuneystem to release white blood cells to starthe repair process. The white blood cellselease chemicals and enzymes, which are

hought to be the cause of the resultingmuscle pain,” Harvey explains.3. Natural treatment for muscle painRestIn case of temporary muscle pain without

much swelling, resting the injured area for aew days may help prevent further injury,”ays Jas Parhar, a Toronto-based pharmacist.

Think of muscle pain as your body’s wayof saying you need a time-out. Taking ahort break from your workout will give

your muscles time to heal.ce, then heat

Reach for an icepack in the rst 72 hours

after an activity that led to muscle pain,

Harvey advises. Cold has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties that will help sootheyour aches. Later, apply heat to your musclesto warm them up before and activity, andthen apply ice afterward to cool musclesdown if they’re feeling uncomfortable.Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relieversWhen rest and ice aren’t enough to ease yourmuscles, you may want to turn to a common

pain-relief medication. “These drugs aloneor in combination can provide effective reliefof musculoskeletal pain,” says Parhar. Here’sa breakdown of your choices:• Ibuprofen  (Advil) and acetylsalicylic

acid (Aspirin) both have anti-inammatory properties, which may beeffective in relieving or even preventingmuscle pain, says Harvey.• Acetaminophen  (Tylenol) is not ananti-inammatory medication, but it doeshave pain-relieving properties. As well, this medication has “less gastrointestinalside effects than [ibuprofen and ASA]and is considered safer to use in theelderly or others who have intestinal

problems,” Harvey explains.• Topical pain treatments  (RUB

A535) are applied directly to the skin torelieve aches and pains. These gels andcreams often contain ingredients such asmenthol, methyl salicylate and capsaicin(the oil that gives peppers their spice),to soothe muscles from the outside in.Topical pain relievers may reduce therisk of side effects associated with someoral medications, but you should stilluse caution when applying them andavoid using any treatment if your skin is

broken or irritated, Parhar warns.Preventing muscle painDOMS may be a fact of exercise life,

but there are a few steps you can take to

reduce exercise-induced pain.• Prepare a post-workout snack. “This new evidence that consuming a mixcarbohydrates and protein in the poexercise period is helpful [for easmuscle pain]”, says Harvey. She suggedrinking 500 mL (2 cups) of chocomilk or munching a bowl of cereal sas Vector and milk after exercising. If you’re trying to tone up, learn wve types of food will help you build maintain lean muscle.• Work up to new workouts.  “Beftaking on a program that is intense

has a lot of eccentric (muscle contractwhile lengthening) exercise in it, do so

preparation training with similar activilike walking down stairs [to help you buup to jogging downhill,” Harvey advise• Don’t take meds preemptively. Thoit may be tempting to down a few parelievers before a grueling workParhar advises against it. “The use of prelievers before exercise should be avoisince they may mask the symptoms ofunderlying musculoskeletal injury, whmay lead to overexertion and furt

damage,” he cautions. When to seek medical helpIt’s normal to feel some mild discomafter vigorous physical activity andshould subside within 24 to 72 hours, sHarvey. However, if you feel severe pduring an activity or your aches havcleared up within a week, it’s time to smedical help. “It is important to understthe underlying cause of the chronic mu

pain, since continuous overexertion lead to long-term damage to the injuarea. A physician should be consultedensure correct diagnosis and appropr

    therapy,” Parhar adds.

     About Sleepwalking

Hours after bedtime, do you ndyour little one wandering the hallooking dazed and confused? If you

have a sleepwalking child, you're notalone. It can be unnerving to see, butleepwalking is very common in kids

and most sleepwalkers only do sooccasionally and outgrow it by theeen years. Still, some simple stepsan keep your young sleepwalker safe

    while traipsing about.

Despite its name, sleepwalking (alsoalled somnambulism) actually involves

more than just walking. Sleepwalkingbehaviors can range from harmlesssitting up), to potentially dangerouswandering outside), to just inappropriatekids may even open a closet door and

pee inside). No matter what kids doduring sleepwalking episodes, though,t's unlikely that they'll remember ever

having done it!As we sleep, our brains pass throughive stages of sleep — stages 1, 2, 3,

4, and REM (rapid eye movement)leep. Together, these stages make

up a sleep cycle. One complete sleepycle lasts about 90 to 100 minutes.

So a person experiences about four orive sleep cycles during an average

night's sleep.Sleepwalking most often occurs duringhe deeper sleep of stages 3 and 4.

During these stages, it's more difcult towake someone up, and when awakened,a person may feel groggy and disorientedor a few minutes.

Kids tend to sleepwalk within an hour

or two of falling asleep and may walkaround for anywhere from a few secondso 30 minutes.

Causes of SleepwalkingSleepwalking is far more commonin kids than in adults, as mostsleepwalkers outgrow it by the earlyteen years. It may run in families, soif you or your partner are or weresleepwalkers, your child may be too.Other factors that may bring on asleepwalking episode include:lack of sleep or fatigue

    irregular sleep schedulesillness or fever

    • certain medications• stress (sleepwalking is rarely caused

by an underlying medical, emotional,or psychological problem)

Behaviors During SleepwalkingOf course, getting out of bed and walkingaround while still sleeping is the most

obvious sleepwalking symptom. Butyoung sleepwalkers may also:• sleep talk• be hard to wake up• seem dazed• be clumsy• not respond when spoken to• sit up in bed and go through repeated

motions, such as rubbing their eyesor fussing with their pajamas

Also, sleepwalkers' eyes are open, butthey don't see the same way they dowhen they're awake and they often think

they're in different rooms of the house ordifferent places altogether.Sometimes, these other conditions mayaccompany sleepwalking:• sleep apnea (brief pauses in breathing

while sleeping)• bedwetting (enuresis)• night terrorsIs Sleepwalking Harmful?Sleepwalking itself is not harmful. However, sleepwalking episodes can behazardous since sleepwalking kids aren'tawake and may not realize what they'redoing, such as walking down stairs or

opening windows.Sleepwalking is not usually a signthat something is emotionally or

psychologically wrong with a child. And it doesn't cause any emotionalharm. Sleepwalkers probably won't evenremember the nighttime stroll. How to Keep a Sleepwalker SafeAlthough sleepwalking isn'tdangerous by itself, it's importantto take precautions so that yoursleepwalking child is less likely tofall down, run into something, walk

out the front door, or drive (if yourteen is a sleepwalker). To help keep your sleepwalker out ofharm's way:• Try not to wake a sleepwalker

because this might scare your child.Instead, gently guide him or her

back to bed.• Lock the windows and doors, not

just in your child's bedroom butthroughout your home, in caseyour young sleepwalker decidesto wander. You may consider extralocks or child safety locks on doors.

Keys should be kept out of reach for

kids who are old enough to drive• To prevent falls, don't let y

sleepwalker sleep in a bunk bed.• Remove sharp or breakable thi

from around your child's bed.• Keep dangerous objects out of rea• Remove obstacles from your chi

room and throughout your hoto prevent a stumble. Especiaeliminate clutter on the oor (i.e.your child's bedroom or playroom

    • Install safety gates outside ychild's room and/or at the top of stairs.

    • Put a wet towel on a garbage bag  place on his/her doorway. This wwake them up.

Other Ways to Help a SleepwalkerUnless the episodes are very regucause your child to be sleepy dur

the day, or involve danger behaviors, there's usually no nto treat sleepwalking. But if sleepwalking is frequent, caus

problems, or your child haoutgrown it by the early teen yeatalk to your doctor. Also talk your doctor if you're concerned tsomething else could be going like reflux or trouble breathing. For kids who sleepwalk often, doctmay recommend a treatment calscheduled awakening. This disruthe sleep cycle enough to help s

listening to soft music or relaxattapes.

    • Establish a regular sleep and schedule and stick to it — bnighttime and wake-up time.

    • Make your child's bedtime earlThis can improve excesssleepiness.

    • Don't let kids drink a lot in evening and be sure they go to  bathroom before going to b(A full bladder can contributesleepwalking.)

    • Avoid caffeine near bedtime.• Make sure your child's bedro

is quiet, cozy, and conducivesleeping. Keep noise to a minimwhile kids are trying to sleep
