than 10% fines with linear shrinkage less than 1% [8]. The embankment materials should be compacted to a minimum of 95% MMDD. Similar material with a minimum thickness of 150 mm should be placed at the base of any cuttings in rock [8]. Excavation in the sandy gravel and clayey gravel materials likely to be recovered for pavement construction may be difficult especially when dry. As a minimum, the use of a 20 tonne excavator and D8 dozer is recommended for shallow ripping and excavation. Mixing and blending of materials or screening to reduce fines content and remove oversize is likely to be required to produce acceptable product for pavement layer construction if naturally occurring gravels are to be used. The layout and working plan of the borrow pit should be guided by the geological conditions encountered to facilitate consistent and acceptable material quality. The material should be placed directly after extraction from the pit as this will retain the natural moisture and less water will be required to optimise compaction. Moisture conditioning by wetting of materials is likely to be required since in-situ moisture content is generally anticipated to be less than optimum moisture content. Following proof compaction, where necessary, the existing pavement/subgrade should be prepared by wetting and tyning to at least 100 mm before any additional pavement or fill material is placed. In sections where the superficial soil is loose or wet, particularly where clayey sand is encountered along the road the subgrade should be tyned or ripped to at least 200 mm. For the purpose of upgrading any existing access tracks; where loss of fines is evident in the existing wearing course, mixing of windrowed material at the road edge may be considered to improve binding performance. The reworked pavement should be moisture conditioned as required and proof compacted with suitable vibratory compaction plant to 95% MMDD prior to any placement of additional materials. If elevated embankment sections with culverts are adopted at any of the creek or river crossings they should be protected from scour by erosion resistant rip rap. The river crossings are generally expected to contain loose superficial soil, therefore proof compaction of the foundation area will be required before rip rap is placed. Topsoil stripped from borrow areas should be stockpiled for reuse during rehabilitation of the borrow pit, which should be completed progressively where possible and include revegetation with plant specimens that will control erosion and provide vegetative diversity compatible with the existing environment. The rehabilitated areas should be monitored and maintained until they are self-sustaining.

6.5.4 Drainage Requirements

Loss of surface material could occur by sustained flow of water along or over the road therefore it is important to incorporate appropriate cross fall, surface grading and drainage systems. Poor compaction or build-up of debris or plant growth on shoulders can prevent surface water from flowing off the pavement and lead to local scouring. Transverse scouring commencing at the edge of the shoulder or on areas of poor compaction can extend towards the road pavement. The provision of a high cross-fall (4-6%), a wearing surface that is tightly bound, table drains and cross drains will reduce the influence of water on pavement performance.

In areas of significant longitudinal grade, transverse drains to divert water away from the road shoulders should be constructed at regular intervals.

6.5.5 Maintenance

Regular patrol grading should be scheduled for maintenance of the road surface and allowance made for periodic repair of potholes and re-compaction or replacement of sections of wearing course to maintain surface integrity and adequate cross fall. Typically, a 150 mm thick wearing course will be lost within 8 to 12 years and re-sheeting of the pavement required.

6.6 Potential Water Dam Site

The ground conditions in the valley at the potential water dam site generally comprised less than 0.5 m of sandy gravel over highly to moderately weathered granite. Up to 0.5 m thickness of clayey sand was identified in the creek channel area. The area may be considered for future use as a tailings storage facility and/or a water storage dam.
