The Beatles weren’t singing

about Medicare in 1967, when they rec-

orded “When I’m 64.” Nevertheless,

now that we are 64, matters like health

care decisions and financial planning

have become a huge priority.

Our upcoming series of “When

I’m 64” seminars approaches these is-

sues head-on. They include:

Sept. 25 - Medicare Educational

Event with TN State Health Insur-

ance Program (SHIP)

Oct. 9 - Planning for the Future

Brings Peace of Mind with elder

law attorney, Barbara Moss

Oct. 30 - BINGO hosted by Stacey

Clayton, a local senior health insur-

ance broker with HealthTN.com.

TBA: SHIP returns to facilitate

Medicare enrollment

You need not be 64 to learn

children, nieces and nephews — anyone

who will find this information helpful.

We are delighted to announce

that Tennessean columnist, Mary

Hance, will be our featured speaker at

Birthday Potluck this month.

Better known to most of us as

“Ms. Cheap,” Mary has shared saving

tips with us since 1994. Reflecting on

the past two decades, Mary offered

“takeaways from Ms. Cheap after 20

years on the cheap beat,” including:

Nothing is a bargain unless you

need it.

“Cheap” is not a dirty word.

Being cheap just to be cheap doesn’t

get it.

Join us for more sage advice

from Ms. Cheap this September 17th.

Lunch is at 11:30, and Mary will speak

at noon.

The Center provides the main

course. Please bring a side dish.

Did you know that Charlotte almost became Tennessee’s state capitol? The Red Hats will

head for the town square in Charlotte this September 24th, where they will tour the court house

(the longest working court house in the state), see the historic Presbyterian Church, and stop by

an Amish grocery. Of course they’ll have lunch someplace good!

The van will leave the center at 10 am. Van fee is $8.

HELP CHILDREN SUCCEED! Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) is seeking volunteers 55 and

older to tutor elementary school students in reading and math. Tutors

spend two hours a week during school hours tutoring at a school near

their home. Training, ma-

terials and staff support are

provided.

If you are interest-

ed, contact Michele Clark,

FLIP coordinator at:

FLIP is a program

The Elephant Sanctuary in

Hohenwald was founded in 1995

and is the nation’s largest habitat

refuge developed spe-

cifically for African

and Asian elephants.

It is operated as a true

sanctuary and is not

open to the public.

They do have a

Welcome Center, however, where

we will enjoy photo exhibits, learn

more about their resident ele-

phants, and watch live streaming

videos of the elephants in the hab-

itat.

Weather permitting, after

the Sanctuary, we’ll pick up a to-

go lunch in Hohenwald and head

for the nearby Meriwether Lewis

Park. We’ll have a picnic in the

park, visit the mon-

ument at the ex-

plorer’s grave and

see exhibits in a log

cabin near the site

of Grinder’s Stand,

the inn where he

last stayed.

The park is on the Natchez

Trace Parkway, so we’ll likely

take the scenic route along the

Walgreens will hold a Flu Shot Clinic at the Center on Tuesday,

Sept. 30 from 9:30 until 11 am.

When you sign up, please give your Date of Birth and Social

Security number to Libby. Walgreens needs this information before the

clinic. If they require ad-

ditional information, Lib-

by will ask you for it.

Williamson County

Medical Center is holding its

semi-annual jewelry sale this

month — and we are going on

Thursday, Sept. 11.

The van will leave the

Center at 9 am. Van fee is $5.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 25

We launch our “When I’m 64” series

with a seminar on Medicare from TN State

Health Insurance Program (SHIP).

SHIP Coordinator, Shauna Hammonds,

will provide essential information about Medicare and answer the

most frequently asked questions, including:

What is the difference between Medicare Parts A, B. C and D?

How do I know which Parts I need? And how do I enroll?

Do I need a prescription drug plan? And how can I determine

which plan will work best for me?

What is the difference between a Medicare Advantage Plan and

a Medigap policy? And how can I tell which one I need?

How can I compare the different plans and policies to choose

the one that makes the most sense for me?

This educational event will also be helpful for people

already enrolled in Medicare who need to make changes and want

to make an informed decision.

The beauty of hosting SHIP is that the information they offer

is unbiased. As a state agency, SHIP doesn’t work on commission.

They are not trying to sell anyone anything.
