Note: The following is an excerpt from anhistorical account by Carl Nielsen whowas co-founder and President of DCI, Inc.from 1955 until his retirement in 1987.

“DCI began on a cold winter day in 1955when Carl Nielsen, who was thenequipment sales manager for OwatonnaCreamery Supplies Co., was visiting withFred and Richard Konsor, who ownedKonsor Brothers’ Welding and MachineShop in Holdingford, MN. The threediscussed orders which Carl had placedwith the Konsors for producing stainlesssteel storage tanks. During theconversation, Carl suggested that it mightbe worthwhile to investigate thepossibilities of forming a new corporationfor the manufacture of stainless steelequipment for the dairy industry. Fred andRichard were receptive to the idea, soCarl resigned his position at OwatonnaCreamery Supplies Co.; borrowed moneyfrom friends to invest in the newcompany and brought in investors alongwith Fred and Richard who agreed toinvest their equipment and talent in thecompany.

Dairy Craft, Inc., started operations onMay 1, 1955, in a vacant farm implementbuilding in Holdingford purchased on acontract-for-deed basis. In the ensuingyears, two major additions were attachedto the building.

In 1969, having outgrown theHoldingford plant, DCI moved to itspresent location in St. Cloud througharrangements made with St. CloudOpportunities, Inc., and local banks. Anaddition was built onto the plant in 1974.

The quality of stainless steel equipmentbeing made by DCI, Inc., was beingpurchased by a wide range of industries. In 1978, it became apparent that theDairy Craft corporate name was notsymbolic of the products and industriesbeing served by the company and thename was changed to DCI, Inc.”

Positive Material Identification

To assure material traceability ofcomponents built into our products, DCI uses Positive Material Identification(PMI). Using the latest technology, NITON®

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) hand-heldanalyzers, DCI can validate raw materialsbefore we begin manufacturing ourproducts.

This testing is non-destructive and cangive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The data and NDT software comply withFDA 21 CFR Part 11, which is arequirement for many DCI customers. Ourprocedure follows ASTM E1476 andincludes calibrations to Certified MaterialsReferences (CRMs) to verify that thematerial and documentation is correctbefore production begins. Theperformance and capabilities of the unitand DCI’s procedures guarantee reliable, accurate results.

CIP Pre-Validation

Our custom designed and built CIP(Clean-In-Place) system includes a PLC forautomatic control of flow, pressure andtemperature. Timed bursts and othercustomer test requirements can beprogrammed. A process recorderprovides a printout of the parametersfor each test.

Upward Spray Cleaning System

DCI’s optional Upward Spray CleaningSystem, with primary and secondaryinternal vent lines, performs all CIP(Clean-In-Place) operations withoutrequiring access to the top of the tank. Our customers realize cost savings byeliminating the purchase of externalladders, walkways and cages. Because thelines are internal, the cost for insulationand heat tape is also eliminated. Thesystem remains in the tank—there is noneed for removal between CIP cycles. Our design is currently available in sizesranging up to 40,000 gallon silo tanks;additional sizes are available upon reviewof customer specifications. The UpwardSpray Cleaning System is USDA acceptedfor use in 3-A silo tanks.

DCI PharmAssist© Lift Assist Solutions

For manway lifting in a safe and controlled manner, look toDCI PharmAssist© Lift Assist. This new piston style assist isdramatically better than the spring style lift. DCI can field-modify existing tanks from spring to piston without requiringan ASME hydro or R stamp. A conversion kit is also available.Horizontal and vertical designs fit any size manway cover.
