GENERAL THEME: A thousand years are like one day in the Lord’s view. In this framework, Christ will return in glory very, very soon! Let us never become discouraged. Rather, let us turn our lives around. Let us prepare for his coming by renewed faith, hope and love.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11: Today’s first reading begins the second section of the book of Isaiah. At the end of the Babylonian Exile, the prophet sees the time of God’s glory at hand. He imagines the closeness of Israel to God in the desert long ago at Mount Sinai, and he sees a new closeness and renewed faith of Israel.

SECOND READING: 2 Peter 3: 8-14: A thousand years in God’s eyes are as a day. Following this time-sequence, one might say that it has only been two days since Jesus ascended to heaven to prepare a place for us. Let us never be discouraged, therefore, at a delay in his coming in glory.
