SCRIPTURE FOR APRIL 7

First Reading Isaiah 43:16–21 (36C) Isaiah recounted how the Lord crushed the enemies of Israel. Then the Lord God did something entirely new by providing water in the desert for his chosen people to drink. Responsorial Psalm 126:1–2, 2–3, 4–5, 6 The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. Second Reading Philippians 3:8–14 Paul told the Philippians how much he has forfeited in order to arrive at resurrection from the dead. Paul’s entire attention was on the finish line as he ran toward the prize: life in Christ Jesus. Gospel Acclamation Joel 2:12–13 Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart; for I am gracious and merciful. Gospel John 8:1–11 Pharisees brought to Jesus a woman caught in adul-tery. They hoped he would condemn her to death by stoning, but Jesus said simply, “Let the one among you who is without sin cast the first stone.” No one dared. Jesus forgave the woman and told her to avoid sin.

the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent. When we scruti-nize something, we look at it carefully, examining it thoroughly. The rites called “scrutinies” reflect this examination. The elect are asked to look within themselves to find anything that keeps them apart from Christ. They then look to Christ to heal those weaknesses, and they seek the support of the parish to strengthen them in their struggle.

PRO-LIFE THOUGHTS

Adoption is such a positive alternative to abortion. It’s a way to save one life while brightening two more: those of the adoptive parents.

FR. BERTELLI’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRIESTLY ORDINATION Dear Friends, Our parish will celebrate this anni-versary on the Sunday after Easter, April 28th, at the 9:00AM Mass followed by breakfast in Manion Hall. MONTH’S MIND On Sunday, April 14th, at 11:00AM, we will re-member in a special way those whose Mass of Chris-tian Burial was celebrated last month:

John B. Giacalone, Sr. Mary Ann Healey-Villa

CRS RICE BOWL This Lent, CRS (Catholic Relief Services) Rice Bowl invites you, your family and community to journey alongside the Good Samaritan, to reflect on the ques-tion: Who is my neighbor? So many of our neighbors are on the move: migrants, refugees, internally dis-placed persons, travelers. The Good Samaritan, a trav-eler himself once on the move, shows us what it means to encounter the stranger, to accompany one in need and to become a companion on the journey. Pope Francis has invited Catholics to build bridges of understanding and hospitality with migrants and refu-gees through “Share the Journey” campaign. Rice bowls are available in the foyer and at each entrance.

WAY OF THE CROSS Come experience the God-given talents of our youth with our St. Eulalia Parish community. The annual performance of 'Way of the Cross' will soon be here Good Friday afternoon, April 19 at 3:00PM. This production has proven to be a moving experience for each of the participants who act out very familiar roles (Pontius Pilate, a centurion, a soldier, Jesus, Mary, Veronica, Simon of Cyrene, Joseph of Arimathea, John the Disciple, and the weeping women of Jerusa-lem). Each year, hundreds of St. Eulalia parishioners look forward to our living reminder of the 14 Stations of the Cross. This one hour presentation is made up of stirring narrations guiding the participants’ actions along with thoughtful reflections, and it is beautifully enhanced by glorious music performed by our Con-temporary Music Group. We will have only four rehearsals starting on Sunday, March 24 at 6:00PM (after the 5:00PM Mass). Partic-ipants are invited to meet downstairs in the Youth Center after Mass (about 10 minutes before the re-hearsal time). Pizza will be provided! Rehearsal dates are all on Sunday evening after the 5:00PM Mass: Mar 24, 31, April 7 and a dress rehearsal on April 14. Performance date: Good Friday, April 19 at 3:00pm. Please encourage our youth to join us as we transform the sanctuary space within St. Eulalia church into a living reminder of Jesus' last steps!

If you’re helping someone with the expecta-

tion of getting something in return, you are

doing business, not kindness.

KINDNESS CORNER

All you need to do is visit www.sainteulalia.org, hit the ‘My Own Church’ button on the home page, and create an account. (*Note: Under “organization”, enter St Eu-lalia without a period after St, in order to choose our parish from the dropdown menu.) Then, someone in the church office will approve your account, and you’ll be able to update all of your family information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. You’ll be able to view the Saint Eulalia pictorial directo-ry. You’ll be able to upload your favorite family photo and choose whether you want that photo (or other infor-mation) to be visible to other members who’ve logged in - or you can keep some information private and available only to church administrators. If you’re involved in ministries here at Saint Eulalia, the information you put into My Own Church will help us schedule your ministry, your preferences and availabil-ity, and see a schedule calendar. Please remember to check out My Own Church soon!

THE UNBROKEN WORD……………..……...……….……..by Michael J. Cunningham

At times we appear to hear the voice of God. Often through others, this can come in many forms. A subtle prompting, a more severe nudge, even a loud call to action. However, we are not always as attentive as we might be.

For myself, I often find others can be better at observing my call than I do so myself. This is one reason I find myself using a Spiritual Director to help me on my journey. Such a director helped me recently with a situation which, as it turned out, surfaced something I was not doing which I should have been doing for years. However, I digress.

I was recently confronted with the situation of a person seeking Spiritual Direction in their life and agreed to meet. A young, unmarried, on-fire Catholic woman who was very frustrated in her search for the mission in her life. She is very successful, dedicated, a hard worker, talented in the workplace as well as very committed to social justice. The sort of person you meet once and remember their passion for the Lord.

This young woman was looking for a place where her powerful faith could be married with her skills in conflict reso-lution. She had been bouncing from different career options, trying to find a good place to land. She was asking for advice on how she could find someone to follow who would lead and mentor her.

After listening and exchanging information about her faith, career, family and desires it was very obvious to me this young woman was a born leader and did not need to be seeking others to follow, those who did not have her passion, energy and calling to a social justice ministry. It was herself who was being called.

When we started to talk about the leadership and love inside of her, the internal flame of Christ and the Holy Spirit, it suddenly became obvious to her she was being called to make the change for herself, not wait for someone else to invite her. She already had the greatest invitation present in her soul, all that was needed was prompting to release it. To get out of the boat and trust that God will lead her whenever that might be.

How often have I heard such a call myself and been unresponsive? I do believe, I have somewhat improved in re-sponding to such requests in recent years, but it has taken me a long time.

Perhaps this week, I should ask myself again; am I responding to God’s call? Can I do more? Can I lead and not just follow?

Reflection and photograph Copyright 2019

Michael J. Cunningham O.F.S.

Where can I find them? Those whom I can follow. Those whom I will love. The one who will be my lifetime love?

Searching in the google of my mind builds billions of options, But I cannot boil the ocean; Or find the perfect leader.

But now, let me rest a while. And snuggle up to you, my God, Like the child I was, Safe and sound. (Pause for a few moments)

Now rested, I see now I do not need to find others to follow. Only you.

And discover I am the leader for your message, Which you will reveal, Once I start out, And leave this place of compromise. To do the work you want of me; Trusting others will follow.

For I am your leader, Your apostle. Your complete companion. And lover. And will go into the divine darkness; Holding your hand. To do your Will.
