From the Pastor’s Desk

Death with hope in resurrection, is the central theme of the Scripture readings for the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Scripture lessons: Reporting his vision in the first reading, Ezekiel bears witness to the reanimation of the dead Israel in preparation for her return to the Promised Land. He assures his people that nothing, not even death will stop God from carrying out His promise. St. Paul, in the second read-ing, assures the early Roman Christians who were facing death by persecution, and us who are surrounded by a culture of death, that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and Who dwells within us will give life to our mortal bodies. He considers the Resurrection of Jesus the ba-sis for our hope of sharing in Jesus’ Resurrection. For John, in today’s Gospel, the raising of Lazarus is the final and greatest sign of Jesus, the Deliverer, a symbolic narrative of his victory over death at the cost of his own life and a sign anticipating his Resurrection. Describing this great miracle, the Church assures us that we, too, will be raised into eternal life after our battle with sin and death in this world. Thus, resurrection hope is the central theme of the Scripture readings for the Fifth Sunday of Lent. The readings assure us that our Faith in Jesus, who is “the Resurrection and the Life,” promises our participation in resurrection and new life. Life messages: #1: “Roll away the stone, unbind him and let him go.” We often bind ourselves with chains of addiction to alcohol, drugs, sexual deviations, slander, gossip, envy, prejudices, ha-tred and uncontrollable anger and bury ourselves in the tombs of despair. Sometimes we are in the tomb of selfishness, filled with negative feelings such as worry, fear, resentment, hatred, and guilt. If we want Jesus to visit our dark dungeons of sin, despair and unhappiness, let us ask Je-sus during this Holy Mass to bring the light and the power of the Holy Spirit into our private life and liberate us from our tombs. Are there times when we refuse to let God enter into our wallets, fear-ing that faithful tithing will endanger our savings? When we receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion, Jesus will call our name and command, "Come out"! This is good news for all of us: “Lazarus, come out!” This can be the beginning of a new life. 2) We need to be ready to welcome death any time. We live in a world that is filled with death. We kill each other in acts of murder, abortion, euthanasia, execution, war and terrorist ac-tivities. We kill ourselves through suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, smoking, overwork, stress, bad eating habits, and physical neglect. The most important question is: am I ready to face my death? All of us know that we will surely die, but each of us foolishly thinks that he or she will not die any time in the near future. Let us be wise, well-prepared and ever ready to meet our Lord with a clear conscience when the time comes.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the king-dom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place dur-ing the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. This program is designed for children ages three through eight (third grade). Children’s Liturgy of the Word brings the Gospel to the children at their level of understanding. Through appropriately adapted Scripture texts, music, prayer, and activities that reinforce the Gospel message, the children have an opportunity to celebrate their faith in a way that is joyful and relevant to their own young lives. The children are escorted out of mass by the program catechists after the Opening Prayer and return to mass during the Preparation of Gifts. For more information, contact Kathy Joslin at 636-677-1567 or [email protected].

Divine Mercy Chaplet/Patriotic Rosary On the First Monday of each month, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed prior to the Patriotic Rosary being said. The Chaplet will begin at 7:00 PM with the Patriotic Rosary immediately following.

Lenten Prayers and Special Observances Prayer of Last Seven Words

O divine Jesus, Incarnate Son of God, for our salvation you consented to be born in a stable, to spend your whole life amid poverty, trials, and misery, and to die surrounded by sufferings on the Cross. At the hour of my death, please tell your Father, Father, forgive them. Tell your Mother, Behold your child. Tell my soul, This day you shall be with me in paradise. My God, my God do not forsake me in that hour. I thirst, yes, my soul thirsts for you who are the fountain of living waters. My life passes away like a shadow; in a short while everything will be accomplished. Therefore, my adored Saviour, from this moment and for all eternity, into your hands I commend my spirit. Lord Jesus, receive my soul.

Prayer of Mercy Most dear Jesus, filled with sorrow during the agony in the garden, covered with a sweat of blood while praying, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, delivered into the hands of the wicked by a kiss, bound like a robber, and aban-doned by your disciples, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, condemned to death by an unjust Council, taken as an evildoer before Pilate, and ridiculed by the wicked Herod, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, publicly shorn of your garments, and most cruelly scourged at the pillar, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, crowned with thorns, beaten and blindfolded, clothed in rich purple, and mocked, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, likened to the infamous Barabbas, rejected by your people, and unjustly sentenced to death, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, burdened with the weight of the Cross and led to the place of execution like a lamb to the slaughter, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, reckoned with the wicked, blasphemed, and derided, and given gall to drink to miti-gate your pain, have mercy on us, O Lord.

Prayer of Mercy (continued)

Most dear Jesus, dying on the Cross in the presence of Mary, pierced with a lance that drew blood and water from your side, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, taken down and placed in the arms of your Sorrowful Mother, have mercy on us, O Lord. Most dear Jesus, horribly bruised and marked with five wounds, anointed for burial and placed in a tomb, have mercy on us, O Lord. My Jesus, I thank you for dying on the Cross for my sins. Have mercy on us, O Lord. Amen.

Holy Thursday Adoration Dear Friends, Holy Thursday our adoration time will be from 8:30 PM to 12 midnight. I encourage you as individuals and families to join in for this special silent prayer and adoration. Let us listen to Jesus who is asking every one of us, “Can you keep watch with me for one hour?” The altar of reposition will be in the cafeteria.

Good Friday Collection

Dear Friends, Please do remember that every year on Good Friday we take a collection for the Holy Land. This money is sent to the diocese and they send it to the Holy Land to maintain the holy places there and to support the different charities there. Please remember this and support generously this cause. Thanks

ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not per-ish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17) The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics, so that we too might have Eternal life. Accordingly, the Pope and the American Bishops have out-lined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows: Ash Wednesday (Wednesday March 1, 2017) and Good Friday (April 14, 2017) are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. On these two days, fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18-59. Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply. We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and penance.
