lsaiah 43:16-21 / Philippians 3:8-14 / John 8:1-11
The adulterous woman should have been stoned. lnstead, the only sounds
piercing the air were those of stones hitting the ground (Thud. Thud. Thud.)
and sandaled feet trudging away in defeat (Shuffle. Shuffle.Shuffle.).
"See, l'm doing something new. lt springs forth; do you not Perceive it?" The
lsraelites were grounded in memories of God's great deeds for them. To be
told by God to "remember not the events of the past" and anticipate
something new presented quite a challenge.
"Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone ather." Doing something new, Jesus turned the law upside down. His wisdom
exposed the foolishness of the scribes and Pharisees. They could only shake
their heads in silence, drop their stones, and shuffle away.
We are the lsraelite people. We are the woman caught in adultery. We are
the stone-grasping accusers. We cling to our expectations of how God
should acl. We cling to sinful behavior. We cling to judgment of others.
Yet God bursts forth with mercy and compassion. This God makes ways in
wilderness, makes rivers in wastelands, and showers us with forgiveness and
love. Mercy trumps vengeance. Compassion trumps violence.
Can you hear the new thing God is doing? The woman caught in adulteryheard it. The scribes and Pharisees heard it. lt sounds like stones dropping. ltsounds like accusers shuffling away. lt is the mercy of God pouring down on
us. Do you not perceive it? Janel Esker [email protected]

de ar PAD Rf,
(.) My friend's parish is hnuing a SaintJoseph's Day Altar,\st wnot k thnt?
According to tradition, the Altar to Saint Joseph
^ originated in the Middle Ages by Sicilians who invoked
A their patron saint during an extended drought and
famine. -When rain finally brought rehee the people
expressed their gratitude in tlvo ways: by displaying a
table with the foods they harvested, and by distributingtheir plenitude to those most in need.
Over time, the custom of an altar around the March 19
feast day of Saint Joseph gained populariry and is nowembraced by the faithful of any nationaliry wishing toshare their good fortune with those who have less.
The meatless feast usually includes baked items, beans,
nuts, fruits, and seafood presented in ways thatsymbolize elements of the faith. Prayerful rituals and
children portraying the Holy Family add to thecelebration and heritage.
Whether the altar is modest or elaborate, at home or inchurch, it's a labor of love meant to strengthen thebonds of family and friends in its preparation and tostrengthen one's faith and chariry in its execution.
