Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal Becomes The Diocesan Annual Campaign

As the Diocese of Harrisburg concludes its 150th Anniversary Year, a change is occurring. To more clearly and more effectively support the mission of the Church on the diocesan level, the Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal is becoming the Diocesan Annual Campaign. The theme for this year is “Faith Forward,” and this renewed approach focusses better on the cooperative efforts of all in the Diocese for the work of the Church throughout the whole year, not just Lent.

Soon you will be receiving letters from Bishop Gainer as well as from Father Wolfe asking for your support as we move “Faith Forward.” As you prayerfully consider your pledge in support of both the goal of our Parish of Saint Joseph’s and the overall Diocesan goal, please be mindful of all the important ministries and services that the Diocese provides our Parish, our parishioners, and our community. Awed by the Encounter Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

As we hear in the Gospel today, we too are invited to come and follow Jesus as his Intentional Disciples. The en-counter of intentional disciples with the Lord transforms them, for this personal encounter is no ordinary experience.

In today’s Scriptures, Isaiah encountered the Lord’s Di-vine presence in an overwhelming fashion:

I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple. Seraphim were stationed above. . . They cried one to the other, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!”

Isaiah was filled with great awe and fear of the Lord, and the humbling awareness of his great sinfulness and weakness. This encounter changed Isaiah, transforming him from “a man with unclean lips” into a faithful servant of the Lord.

Intentional Discipleship invites us to cultivate greater Reverence, Awe, and Obedience in our own relationship with Almighty God. Without these virtues, the Lord is just another one whom we can ignore or relegate to some corner of our life. In less than a month, we will embark upon the pil-grimage of Lent. NOW is the time to begin packing for this pilgrimage, so that we are prepared for the LORD to accom-pany us in those 40 days of growing as Intentional Disciples. The disciplines of Intentional Disciples can be found on the last page of this bulletin. Just as Peter heard the call of the Lord and followed, so hear him calling you TODAY to em-brace these disciplines.

The Church gathers us into the Divine Presence every Sunday. But we can fail to recognize this, if we think of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as solely the human activity of worship. Instead, the Mass is our ENCOUNTER with the Crucified and Risen One. In every Mass, Christ’s perfect sacrifice of the cross is offered to God the Father, and we join the offering of ourselves to Christ’s offering. Therefore, the Mass is both a Divine and human action.

We acknowledge this Divine Presence by what we do:

We observe silence in the church, out of respect for God’s presence and others’ need for quiet prayer;

We genuflect, as a sign of reverence, toward the Taber-nacle where Jesus Christ is present in the Blessed Sac-rament when we enter and leave the church;

We dress appropriately and modestly, remembering the church is not a disco, nor a gymnasium;

We do not eat or drink in the church, nor chew gum, for the meal we share is Christ’s Body and Blood;

We listen attentively to God’s Word proclaimed and preached, for God is speaking to us;

We receive Holy Communion only when our souls and hearts are free of serious sin;

We depart from the Lord’s House after silent, personal prayer, not as a mob leaving a theater;

We return every Sunday, so as not to miss an experi-ence of God’s Presence.

In the Love of Christ our Savior,

Fr. Allan F. Wolfe

INDIVIDUAL & PARISH RENEWAL THRU INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP

Intentional Discipleship is the way we live fully our Catholic lives as adopted sons and daughters of God through Holy Baptism. The LORD has provide all the grace and means to become Intentional Disciples, but we must re-spond. As athletes must train to become proficient in their sport, so Christians must cultivate our relationship with the Lord through the habits or disciplines of discipleship.

Disciplines of Intentional Discipleship

In this second month of 2019 let us intentionally em-brace the Six Disciplines of Discipleship and decide con-cretely how we will use them in our daily living:

Daily Scripture Reading Daily Prayer Intentional Sacramental Life Fellowship Service to the World Sharing Christ with Others (Evangelization)

Daily Scripture Reading - Good communication is es-sential in human relationships, especially for them to grow deeper and stronger. Sacred Scripture is God speaking to us through his Word, but we have to read it to receive this Word. Some may be intimidated by the Bible, because they find it hard to understand or don’t know where to begin. The Bible is not just another book, and it certainly is not a novel or a mystery.

Tips for Reading the Bible

Attend Mass and you will hear 3 portions of the Bi-ble on a weekday and 4 on a Sunday. Plus the priest or deacon will explain its application in our lives;

Buy a Catholic Bible — the New American Bible Re-vised Edition or the Revised New Jerusalem Bible — so the translation you are using is accurate and has good footnotes;

If you are new to reading the Bible, begin with one of the gospels like Matthew or Luke and read only a few paragraphs and then reflect on what God is say-ing through that passage;

Use resources like Magnificat— https://us.magnificat.net/online/ OR

USCCB-Readings

http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings OR

Word on Fire—

https://wau.org/meditations/
