seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend is Commitment Weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal. We will listen to a brief refl ec-tion by Cardinal Cupich and I will lead us through the commitment process. I am grateful for your openness to the Cardinal’s invitation and your own personal refl ection on how to participate.

The theme of this year’s appeal is a familiar one; Come, Follow Me. We are invited by the Lord to be mission-ary disciples. We are missioned to bring God’s love to those in need. We respond not only to the needs of our parish but also the Church of Chicago and, of course, the larger world.

The Appeal can be one of the ways we support the larger efforts of the ministry of the Church. Resources raised through the Appeal sup-port parishes and schools that are fi nancially challenged. The Appeal provides resources to support par-ish vitality across the Archdiocese. The Appeal funds efforts directed to connecting our youth, young adult, college ministry and adult religious education efforts. Resources sup-port our respect for life at all stages. Through the Appeal’s contributions to Catholic Relief Services, we can aid in disaster relief. The appeal funds programs for marriage preparation and the education of seminarians. The Appeal funds our ministry for the police and fi re departments of many communities, as well as the airports.

Each parish has a goal based on a percentage of its annual Sunday offering. Our goal is $129,195. Any money raised over the goal remains here at the parish. If we exceed our goal, I would like to replace the lap-tops we use in Religious Ed to take better advantage of the technology in our classrooms. I would like to obtain a parish subscription to Formed, which is kind of a "Catholic Netfl ix"

of videos that every parishioner could access. I would like to install a dishwasher in the convent and a new washer and dryer for the rectory. Additional funds could enhance the projects of the capital campaign; in-cluding the renovation of McDonnell Hall, STEM Labs for the school and the entrance onto the property off Glenview Road.

Our parish can be proud of its sup-port of the Catholic Appeal in the past and I pray for the success of this year’s invitation to Come, Follow Me.

This Sunday is also Scout Sunday. At the 7:30 Mass, we honor several of our scouts who have earned religious medals. All morning they will be serv-ing their annual Pancake Breakfast in the Playdium. We have a vital scouting program here at OLPH. I am so grateful to the many adults com-mitted to the scouting program. Our scouts are a source of much pride in what they accomplish.

You may be wondering where Fr. Lara is. He travelled to Mexico to visit his family and to renew his Religious Worker Visa. The processing of that renewal took longer than we had an-ticipated. He is now home! He is such a blessing to our parish. Fr. Paddy is recovering from a bad bout of the fl u. He is feeling much better and appreci-ates all your concern. Fr. Paddy does so much for the parish from working with our teens to offering his popular book club discussions. Fr. Nick has been awesome fi lling the gap, after all, I need my rest (only kidding!)

Next Saturday at the 5:00 Mass we will have our annual celebration of marriage and the renewal of vows. (Psst. Then you are supposed to take her out for dinner!) This year Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day.

Have a blessed week,Fr. Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

In today’s Gospel we hear of a great number of suffering people who seek the healing touch of Jesus. He could not respond to them all.

But the Gospel also reveals Jesus, after praying in solitude, sensing an urgency to proclaim the Good News of his Father’s redemptive love to those who suffer in the nearby villages and towns.

Stewards are called to follow in Jesus’ foot-steps, to respond to those who suffer with compassion.

How are we responding to the suffering in our world?

How are we using our gifts to continue the work of Christ’s redemp-tive healing?

seek, share, rejoice - parish news...

Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese.

Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Ash Wednesday Announcement

This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine's Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given.

Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day.

In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance.

Ash Wednesday

PalmsBaskets for palms are available in the rear and south vestibules of Church. Please return your old palms between now and February 12. The palms will be burned on February 13 in order to provide us with ashes for the Ash Wednesday Masses and liturgies.

seek, share, rejoice - transformation...

Sowing the SeedOur Transformation Initiative is well into its second year and much has been accomplished in the ar-eas of Catechesis and Communio. A youth minister has been hired, a new devotions ministry has been

established, min-istries have been highlighted, speak-ers have inspired us. Is there, however, a tangible way of measuring the impact of Transformation on our parish community?

We often judge the success of an initiative or a program by look-ing at “the numbers.” How many turned out? How great an impact did it make? Is there a tangible outcome that can be measured? And, if we cannot measure or are disappointed in the outcome, we think,

“Why did I bother? What good am I doing? Is anyone listening?”

Our words and our actions are seeds that we sow, but we have little control over where these seeds fall. Some may take hold in the minds and the hearts

of others; they may grow and fl ourish, maybe even produce new seeds. Others may be heard or seen, but they fail to take hold and are soon forgotten. The reaping of the seeds is out of our hands.

St. Francis prayed, “Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.” He does not ask God to show him the fruits of his labor or to reward him for his good works. St. Francis goes on to pray, “O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be under-stood as to understand; to be loved as to love.” His giving is selfl ess, and he gives with the faith that all he says and does is in the hands of God.

In the classic movie It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey despairs that his life has had no meaning until he is shown all the lives that have been touched and made better by his words and actions. Every good act has a ripple effect like a pebble tossed in a pond. Kindness begets kindness. Love begets love. But, fi rst, the seeds must be sown.

We can all be instruments of God’s peace as well as instruments of transformation by giving freely of His word and of His love to everyone we meet, not counting the cost or measuring the outcome. God’s word is the seed we all hold in our hands. Let us strive to be sowers who trust in God to do the reaping.

Evolve Presentation - World Religions

Saturday, February 17, 9:30-11:15 am, McDonnell HallJoin the Evolve Ministry as we welcome Jerrol Leitner for his presentation: Jesus In the World Religions: An Exploration of How Non-Christian Traditions View Jesus.

A growing understanding of truth sees truth as plural: no one viewpoint is suffi cient to explore any reality. So ...imagine a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, and a Buddhist seated around a table. Surprisingly, the topic is Jesus – a fi gure respected by each tradition, but in differing and illuminating ways. This presentation examines how four of the great religions understand Jesus of Nazareth and the insights they unveil both to those who see him as divine and those who see him as one of world’s greatest teachers.

Jerrol Leitner holds dual master's degrees in Theology and English. He taught these subjects at St. Viator's High School for 40 years. Leitner is a regular speaker at several local churches and adult education centers including Common Ground in Deerfi eld.

We celebrated our Catholic identity in style all week. From the Staff vs. Student volleyball game (students won) to Fine Arts Fest, a fun time was had by all! Our Small Change Can Change The World Drive collected for the Ronald McDonald House. We packed the gym Thursday night playing St. A’s and ended our week with our fun teacher switch on Freaky Friday.
