Fifth Grade Summer Academic Enrichment Summer 2015 Dear Parents: Tampa Day School is providing summer enrichment work to help prevent summer learning loss. The assignments will consist of mandatory reading activities as well as suggested math and writing activities to keep your child academically engaged throughout the summer break. As a general guideline, Tampa Day School is encouraging students to engage in academic activities for at least 30 minutes each weekday. We need the support of parents to help students reach this goal. By the end of the summer, students should complete the following: REQUIRED READING - Assignments for the preparation of the 2014- 15 school year have been selected as follows: Students must complete the mandatory book report(s): o Incoming 2 nd -3 rd grade students: Complete ONE book report o Incoming 4 th -5 th grade students: Complete TWO book reports, ONE Biography & ONE Fiction. o Incoming 6 th – 8 th grade students: ONE required reading & project and ONE student selected book & project.     SUGGESTED WRITING - Suggested journal prompts are listed below. Students are encouraged to keep a journal this summer. The journal prompts are great starters. We are suggesting that students respond to approximately 5 prompts (either from the list or any other topic).

• What was the most exciting activity you did this summer? • Write about a movie you saw this summer. • Where did you go on vacation? • Describe your perfect summer day. • What friends did you spend time with? Tell what you did. • If I could go anywhere this summer I would go… • If you found a magic wand this summer what would you do with it? • Are you looking forward to coming back to school in August? Why or Why

not? • My favorite indoor summer activity is… • My favorite outdoor summer activity is… • If you won $1,000 in a contest, what would you do with the money? • What kind of car would you like to drive and why? • Describe a food that you would not want to eat.

Students who complete the suggested assignments will participate in a reward activity in September. Summer Assignments will be due September 4, 2015.

Fifth Grade Summer Reading

Required: A biography from the Who Was? Series, or other grade-appropriate biography. Choice of project: Student-Selected Project: After reading the required biography complete one of the options below.

Option 1) News Report

• Students can have someone video them giving a news report about their biography or student may give their news report in person.

• Begin by stating your full name and what TV station you are reporting for (Channel 10 News, etc.).

• Be sure to include the title, author, and tell exciting details about the person you have read about.

• Include your favorite part of the biography and why. • Tell your audience whether you recommend this book.

Option 2) Time Line

• Make a poster with ten (10) of the most important events from the person’s life.

• Students will present the poster to their class. • They should be able to discuss why they chose this

biography and what the person’s most important contributions to history were.

Option 3) Wax Museum • The students are to come dressed as the person they

read about in their biography. • They must also have ten facts about the person read

about (facts may be written on note cards). • They will share their facts in character. Example: “I am

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. Most people know me as the president who ended slavery. I was born . . . etc.”

Required: One fiction selection from the attached list. Students should read this book on their own, so should select a text at the appropriate AR reading level. For the book selected from your child’s summer reading list, please make a file folder book report. The file folder report requirements are attached. Book Report File Folder

Front Cover The front cover of the file folder should include:

� A creative illustration (Your version of the book cover) � The title of the book underlined. � The author � Your name and date written like this: “Book Report by John Smith on

November 15, 2011”

Left Inside Panel The left inside panel of the file folder should include the following sections:

� 3 Main Characters (Illustrate each of the main characters and describe them in at least two sentences each. Use plenty of descriptive words and tell about their personalities.)

� Setting – Where does the story take place? (Illustrate a picture of one of the main settings in the book, and then describe it in at least 3 sentences. Use plenty of descriptive words so that the reader can see, hear, taste, smell, and touch the setting. )

� Key Words – Find at least six words that you did not know the meaning of before reading this book. Then, write the words in this section along with their definitions. Use a dictionary.

Right Inside Panel

The right inside panel should include the following sections: � Plot – What is the main problem in the story and how does the main

character(s) solve it? This needs to be written in two paragraphs consisting of at least three sentences each. Be very detailed!

o Paragraph one will answer, “What is the main problem in the story?” o Paragraph two will answer, “How does the problem get solved?”

� Summary – What happened and in what order? (This section needs to have at least 4 paragraphs consisting of at least 3 sentences each.)

o Your first paragraph will answer, “What happened first?” o Your next paragraph will answer, “What happened next?” o Your third paragraph will answer, “Then what?” o And your final paragraph will explain the final event.

Back Panel

The back panel should include the following sections:

� Book Review – Your book review should be a paragraph of at least three sentences:

o On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the book? o Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? o Was this book interesting, or where there any interesting parts?

Explain. � About the Author – This is a research section about the author. First, you

will need to print a picture of your author from the Internet and place it in this section (If you do not have a printer or Internet, you must draw the picture). Then, you will need to tell us about the author in at least two paragraphs.

o Paragraph one should tell us where and when the author was born; about his/her family, education, and childhood; and any other important facts about the author.

o Paragraph two should tell us; how he/she became a writer; what his/her inspiration was for writing this book; any other important book he/she has written.
