How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today, we make our life’s journey more diffi-cult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. When we really put God first in everything and put money and possessions second, we experience more freedom to joyfully serve God and others.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED! It’s that time of the year when the local stores have school supplies on sale. St. Mary is once again collecting school supplies for the MILTON FOOD PANTRY. all supplies required for the Milton School District are needed. Especially needed are:
Items NOT needed are: Kleenex, plastic storage bags or wipes. Please keep in mind that any items not received as donations are purchased by the Food Pantry for the families who applied for assistance. Monetary donations are also accepted and will be included on your contribution statement for a poten-tial tax deduction at the end of the year! For the longest time on my spiritual journey, there was one giant hurdle I had trouble leaping over. That intimidating obstacle was saying grace before meals in public. I was super conscious of people looking at me making the sign of the cross or — if dining with others — getting people to shut up long enough to hear myself pray. I eventually became comfortable doing so and occasionally would be complimented on the gesture or, rarely, be on the receiving end of an attitude adjustment toward the negative. I’ll admit, though, that one habit I’ve never acquired is saying grace after meals. If it ever came to mind, it wouldn’t be anything more profound than, “Thanks, God, for this meal I just had.” We’re familiar with the traditional grace before meals, but did you know there is also a traditional prayer at the end of a meal? There are a couple of factors that may be contributing to this prayer falling into disuse. The first is practical. For families especially, it is difficult enough to round up everyone for prayer at the beginning of the meal. But at the end of it? Nearly impossible. The second is the — how can I put this delicately? — dorkiness of the text. Except for the last part. Saints through the ages have always told us that it is essential for us to pray for the souls in Purgatory. Of course, there is no strict rule about the wording of these prayers. Another common (and less clumsy) iteration of grace after meals goes like this: We give you thanks, almighty God,
for these and all your gifts which we have received from your goodness through Christ, O Lord. Amen. Saint John Chrysostom said some-thing to the effect that the prayer after meals is even more important than the one before since we can forget God and yield more easily to temptation when our stomachs are full. The custom of giving thanks after a meal originates with the farewell address of Moses to the Israelites. “When you have eaten
and are satisfied,” he says, “you must praise the LORD, your God” (Deuteronomy 8:10a). That whole chapter is a reminder to be grateful to God for all things. Pope Francis, in his second encyclical Laudato si' (“On Care For Our Common Home”), calls this “an attitude of the heart... which accepts each moment as a gift from God to be lived to the full” (#226). Let the pope’s further remarks be a catalyst for renewing this practice: “One expression of this attitude is when we stop and give thanks to God before and after meals. I ask all believers to return to this beautiful and meaningful custom. That moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our dependence on God for life; it strengthens our feeling of gratitude for the gifts of creation; it acknowledges those who by their labors provide us with these goods; and it reaffirms our solidarity with those in greatest need” (#227).

FREE ORGAN RECITAL AT HOLY NAME HEIGHTS: Dr. Thomas Fielding, Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo, Michigan, will present an or-gan recital on the Schmelzer Memorial Organ at Holy Name Heights on Thursday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m. The concert is free and all are welcome to attend. The program is about an hour long and includes mu-sic by J.S. Bach, Cesar Franck, and other great composers. His repertoire includes an original composition, Christus Vincit: Toccata for Organ which he composed in 2010. Fielding, a graduate of Indiana Uni-versity's prestigious Jacobs’ School of Music, has won several national performance com-petitions. He also has written numerous sa-cred compositions which have been per-formed throughout the world. The chapel of Holy Name Heights is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible.
