CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish July 14, 2013 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “To renew all things in Christ” Dear friends, When our pastor is away, I have this chance to write the letter. As I meditate on this Sunday Gospel’s reading, I have a flash back memory that I would like to share with you. Gary Job Corps Center was my first school after living in America for a year with a PHD degree translated “Pizza Home Delivery” that I was quickly earned after a short time living in America. Fourteen months at Gary Job Corps, I finished study of Electrician and GED. In these fourteen months, I once witnessed a fight between African American students and Hispanic students. There were a lot of cops, FBI and security came from all over the places to break up the fight. During the fight, I happened to stand behind a cop. An African American student came up behind the cop grasped his baton and hit him behind his head and knocked the cop down instantly, even though the cop was big and tall! In this chaos, a lot of minority students, including Vietnamese students, just stepped back and watched! Why didn’t we, minority students, jumped in to help resolve the situation? Have we enjoyed watching the fight rather than helping? Maybe, we were all afraid to get hurt if we jumped in to help! This experience leads me to another experience when I was still in Vietnam. There were a lot of fights in Vietnam, at least in my neighborhood where I was born and raised for twenty-two years. The fight broke out between this person and that person because of a conflict, between the two neighbors because of jealousy, between two brothers or two sisters living in the same house because of pride, shame, or any other reason. In these fights, as I recall, not many people jumped in to help, but there were a lot watching the fights! Was that because of our cultural custom since there was a Vietnamese saying, “people come when there is a meal, but leave when there is a fight”? Before I studied to be priest, I used to live in an apartment to go to work and go to school. Several times, I encountered a fight from the next door neighborhood. Usually, when I heard the fight, I either didn’t dare to open the door to see if I could help; or I just headed out to some place! Once, I saw a fight between a male and a female in the neighborhood, I pretended that I didn’t see it and kept walking! There was also a time that I saw two males fighting, I ignored it and kept driving away! I wasn’t the only one afraid, ran away from it, or ignored it! Did it mean that I didn’t want to help? Perhaps, not! What made me and others dare to not come to help? They had the same human value as me and others, but why did we have difficulty to come to help? In today’s Gospel, Saint Luke showed us a picture of a scene portraying a man that was robbed, beaten,

ist” Dear friends,

When our pastor is away, I have this chance to write the letter.

In today’s Gospel, Saint Luke showed us a picture of a scene portraying a man that was robbed, beaten,

and left half-dead on the road. A priest went by, and a Levite passed. They all ignored and continued their journey! Are they busy with what they are doing? Who knows! Are they afraid of getting themselves involved in the situation that might not benefit them and might delay their journey and what they are doing? There could be numerous reasons of not stopping to help because these priest and Levite are the highly respected people in that society. They understand better the laws and the rules than others. They understand better than others, but why did they ignore this half-dead person on the road? Why did Jesus tell this story to answer the scholar of the law when he asked, “Who is my neighbor?” If the Lord Jesus comes and asks us today, “Who is your neighbor?” What would we tell him? May Jesus’ teaching always be an unblemished burning torch in our Christian life. God bless,

Let God love you Have you ever seen

a parent scoop up a child and hug him closely as if he couldn’t get enough of that beloved child? That’s how God feels about you. He loves you dearly and shows you each day. Open your heart to him. He longs to embrace you and tell you that he loves you. Let God love you through the people around you. When you need help, support, or healthy love, don’t refuse those whom God sends to you.

God wants our safety and shows us the surest path for us to walk. Jesus walked it first to show us how. Follow his steps to stay safe. Our Father lets us make our own choices but gives advice to guide us. All we need to know to make smart decisions is contained in Scripture. Refer to it often to find out what God thinks is best. He is always ready to forgive. We are the ones who forget to ask. Meet him in Confession regularly.

As a loving Father, he waits for our next visit and longs for our love. Don’t miss a chance to meet him at Mass and in daily prayer. And, as a good Father, he waits for the day when all his children will come home to him and rest forever in his arms.

The Our Father is actually our prayers in one. First, its a prayer of praise and ives God the glory that e is due.

Second, it is a prayer of petition in which we ask God to provide what we need. hird, it is a prayer asking or forgiveness and the trength to be forgiving. And last, it is a prayer of cknowledgement. It forces us to admit that God knows what is best for us and reminds us to submit to his will rather than our own. That’s what makes it the perfect prayer model.

God hears all prayers, but he wants to know that we are committed to that for which we are asking. Is it a real need or just a momentary thought? Like the neighbor in this Gospel reading, Jesus encourages us to be persistent and continue to ask for God’s help, seek God’s will, and open the door to God’s grace in our lives.

Luke 11:1-13, the perfect prayer

Other than attend Mass, what else must I do?We are also called to perform works of mercy. “The works of

mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2447).

There are seven spiritual works of mercy: to admonish the sinner, to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubtful, to comfort the sorrowful, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive all injuries, to pray for the living and the dead.

There are also seven corporal works of mercy. They are: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit those in prison, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, bury the dead.

How important is it for us to perform these acts? Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me” (Mt 25:35-36). That makes it very important.
