The 15th Statewide Integrated Care Conference will be held on October 24-25, 2018 at the Hilton Universal Hotel, Universal City, California. This year’s conference theme is “Integrating Substance Use, Mental Health, and Primary Care Services: Disruptive Innovations and Sustaining Change.”

The neighborhoods we live in influence our behaviors and affect our health in profound ways. Social and economic factors in our communities are linked to physical and mental health disorders, illiteracy, homelessness, substance use and higher mortality rates. Through the conference, we hope to bring together physical health, mental health, and substance use disorder treatment providers to strengthen partnerships and to highlight innovative strategies that address these chronic conditions within our diverse communities.

This year we are honored to welcome Jurgen Unützer, M.D., M.P.H., and Edythe D. London, Ph.D. as our plenary speakers:

Dr. Unützer is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington, and Director of the Division of Population Science. He is an internationally known psychiatrist and health services researcher with a focus on translating research on evidence-based mental health care into effective clinical and public health practices. Dr. Unützer has over 250 scholarly publications and is most notably known for his efforts on improving the care of adults with co-morbid mental health and medical disorders.

Dr. London is a Professor In-Residence in the Departments of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine University of California, Los Angeles. She is internationally known for her research on substance use disorders utilizing Positron Emission Tomography and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging on the neural circuitry underlying craving, self-control and behaviors related to addiction.

The conference offers thematic tracks that recognize the importance of addressing the needs of specific populations and of system transformation. Attendees may follow tracks (including but not limited to LGBTQ issues, primary healthcare, children and transition-age youth, and criminal justice) through the breakout sessions, or mix and match content to meet their own interests. All workshop presenters will address how their specific topic area relates to the theme of disruptive innovations and sustaining change.

Meeting the needs of our communities through the provision of timely, effective, and well-coordinated services that address the unique needs, values and cultures of those served is the keystone of our collective efforts. The 15th Statewide Conference seeks to further this goal within the context of uncertainty as we navigate yet another series of transformative changes to the health care delivery system. Our intent is to help providers streamline access to care, increase responsiveness to the needs of the individuals we serve, and improve coordination of service delivery.

To this end, the conference goals are as follows:

· To facilitate attendees’ ability to coordinate services to improve healthcare integration and collaboration for mental health, primary care, and substance use disorder services.

· To help attendees identify the characteristics of services and providers that best support health, wellness, and recovery.

· To provide access to information regarding emerging best practices for treating the complex needs of different populations

· To provide attendees with learning opportunities that enhance their skillset and improve outcomes.

At the conclusion of the conference, attendees will be able to:

(1) Describe at least two (2) recent innovations in primary care integration with substance use and mental health treatment.

(2) Explain how to manage the unique needs of the veteran population in regards to primary care, substance use, and mental health-related issues.

(3) Identify two (2) challenges facing children in the transition of their care throughout their lives.

(4) Compare and contrast the various FDA-approved medications for the treatment of alcohol and opioid use disorders.

(5) Specify three (3) issues related to connecting the homeless with primary care, substance use, and mental health services.

(6) Describe how to develop an individualized, bio-psycho-social treatment plan.

(7) Provide examples of at least three (3) strategies to use when working with a culturally diverse population and describe how to respond to their specific needs.
