Together with an article on the famous Charge at Ombdurman by the 21st Lancers written by Ian McInnes and published in The Medal Box magazine. Contained in the article is a previously unpublished roll for the Sudan showing those who served at Omdurman. In this article Pte H Jones is listed without a Lancers' regimental number, which would be the case if he was attached to the unit. This is as indicated by the naming on the medal offered here for sale. Pte H Jones is recorded as serving in B Squadron which was commanded by Major John Fowle. Of the four squadrons present, B Squadron received two Victoria Crosses and had 10 men killed with 24 wounded, a total of 34 casualties. This was more casualties than the other three units combined.

Michael Terry migrated to Australia and became one of its best-known modern explorers. In 1933 he discovered Hidden Basin which contains two salt water lakes about 800 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs. He also authored many articles and books, best known are Across Unknown Australia and Sands and Sun. During WWI he served with the Royal Naval Air Service in Russia, was captured by the Russians, and with others was lined up before a fi ring squad only to be saved by a British offi cer who was able to talk the executioners out of it. Together with a civilian I.D. disc for Michael Terry, a RSL badge 1965, a NES New South Wales badge as well as research. He joined the Australian Army Medical Corps and served with A.N. & M.E.F. in Rabaul, German New Guinea for 6-months from 20 November 1915 to 28 March 1916. He was discharged in Sydney with reason given as 'Services no longer required' although Lt-Col L.C.Strangman gave instructions to give him an 'unsatisfactory discharge'. On 3 May 1917 he was reported MIA in France and following a Court of Enquiry by CO 17 Bn this was amended to KIA on the battlefi eld. Recommendation for Victoria Cross by G.O.C. 5th Australian Infantry Brigade dated 18th July 1916, "For his gallantry on the night of 25/26th June, 1916, in rescuing wounded men under fi re. While returning from a successful raid on the German trenches, South of Armentieres, several members of the Raiding Party were seriously wounded in NO MAN'S LAND by hostile shell fi re. Private Jackson returned safely to our lines through a most intense barrage of shrapnel, H.S. and crossed Machine Gun fi re, escorting a prisoner. Hearing that some of his party had been hit, Private Jackson handed his prisoner over and immediately returned into NO MAN'S LAND into the enemy's barrage and assisted in bringing in a wounded man. He then went out again, notwithstanding the fact that the hostile bombardment was more intense than ever, and with Sgt. Camden, 19th Battalion, A.I.F., was bringing in Pte. Robinson (who was seriously wounded) when a shell exploded close by. Private Jackson's right arm was blown off above the elbow, Robinson was wounded again and Sgt. Camden knocked unconscious. As Jackson could not do anything by himself, he returned to our trenches, obtained assistance and went out again to search for his two comrades. They were however, met just outside our trenches. Private Jackson's condition was serious; but throughout he showed wonderful fortitude. His work with the Raiding Party as a Scout and also with his battalion in the same capacity has always been of the highest order marked with the greatest coolness dash and bravery." Citation for Victoria Cross, "For most conspicuous bravery. On the return from a successful raid, Private Jackson came back safely, handed over two prisoners he had brought back and immediately went out again. He was bringing in a wounded Sergeant when his right arm was blown off by a shell, and the Sergeant rendered unconscious. Returning to our trenches he obtained assistance and went out again to look for his wounded comrade. He set a splendid example of pluck and determination and his work has always been marked by the greatest coolness and bravery." First Supplement No. 29740 to the London Gazette of 8th September 1916; Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. 184 14th December 1916."

In the book "They Dared Mightily", edited by Lionel Wigmore, the action for which Private Jackson was awarded the Victoria Cross is described as follows, "This raid was one of a number conducted in the Armentieres sector,

as part of a programme of harassing enterprises against the enemy lines. They were begun after the preparatory artillery barrage for the Somme battle had commenced, and continued until after the commencement of the infantry attack. On this occasion - the night of 25th-26th June - the raiders consisted of nine offi cers and seventy-three other ranks, all volunteers from the 5th Brigade. Captain K.Heritage, 19th Battalion, was O.C. The raiders found themselves confronted by a deep ditch protected by wire. Machine-gun fi re was continually sweeping over them, but by keeping low they avoided it. The troops managed to cross the ditch by a foot-bridge leading to an enemy listening post. Soon after, most were actually in the German trenches, whose garrison had taken shelter in dug-outs from the covering barrage. Only token resistance was offered, and it was soon overcome. Engineers with the party got to work and blew up two bomb-stores. Withdrawing some fi ve minutes later, the enemy brought down artillery fi re on No Man's Land and casualties began to occur. The Germans also organised a counter attack, and two minutes after the raiders had left could be heard bombing their way back along their own trench. It was after the return of Jackson with his prisoner that he insisted on returning to bring in one of the thirteen casualties sustained on the way back. This done, he set off to bring in another. Although terribly wounded in this unsuccesful attempt he returned, got the assistance he needed, and went out for the fourth time, to search for the sergeant and the wounded man they had been helping in. Only sheer will-power carried him through the last expedition, but he had the satisfaction of escorting to safety one of the men concerned. His arm, which had been hanging only by some loose tissue, had to be amputated."

William Jackson was born, John William Alexander Jackson, on 13th September 1897 at Gunbar, near Hay in New South Wales. His father's fi rst name was also John so it is understandable that he became known as William or Bill. A farm labourer, he put his age up by one year when he enlisted on 15 February 1915 under the name William Jackson and was posted to B Coy, 17th Battalion, 5th Infantry Brigade. After a stint fi ghting on Gallipoli he was hospitalised with dysentery. Upon recovery he rejoined his unit which moved to serve in France on the Western Front. It was for his gallant actions here that he was awarded the Victoria Cross at the age of 18. Thus he became the youngest Australian to be so honoured and when he returned to Australia, reaching New South Wales on 5th July 1917, he became the fi rst WWI Victoria Cross recipient to return and accordingly received a huge reception both at Sydney and also at his hometown of Gunbar.

Confusion surrounded Jackson's award as he was originally awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. This was cancelled when his award was upgraded to the Victoria Cross. Unfortunately, the advice of the D.C.M. was sent to his father in Australia and additionally, the D.C.M. was promulgated after the V.C. was announced and later it was cancelled in the London Gazette of 20th October 1916. Unfortunately a letter dated 4 January 1917 from Base Records Offi ce, A.I.F. to Jackson's father states, "I have much pleasure in forwarding herwith copy of extract from First Supplement No. 29760 to the London Gazette of 22nd September, 1916, relating to the conspicuous services rendered by your son, No. 588, Private W.Jackson, 17th Battalion. Awarded The Distinguished Conduct Medal. 'His Majesty The King has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the undermentioned soldier for acts of gallantry and devotion to duty in the fi eld:- No. 588, Private William Jackson, For conspicuous gallantry. After a successful raid he escorted back a prisoner and immediately returned to 'No Man's Land' under heavy fi re, and assisted in bringing in a wounded man. On going out again his arm was blown off by a shell while he was bringing in a second wounded man, but even after this he continued to assist in the rescue of other wounded. His work as a scout has always been marked by the greatest pluck.' The above has been promulgated in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No.184, of 14th December, 1916." The cancellation of the award in favour of the Victoria Cross appeared in Military Order No. 288/60/1917. Base Records wrote to Mr Jackson senior on 14 April 1919 advising that the award of the D.C.M. had been overidden by the V.C. and asked him to return the notifi cation dated 4 January 1917 however he replied that his son had it and he did not know where to contact him as he had moved. As nobody told Jackson of the cancellation he wore the D.C.M. right up until at least 1942 and he is recorded in numerous newspaper articles and even in Who's Who as a recipient of the V.C. and also the D.C.M. Confusion about his actual award entitlement even prompted the Australian War Memorial to write to Central Army Records Offi ce in October 1964 requesting clarifi cation as to whether he had been awarded the D.C.M. and M.M. as well as the V.C. It was also reported in the Sabretache Journal of the Military Historical Society of Australia Vol XLV No. 2 June 2004 that on 11 November 2001 a plaque in honour of Jackson was unveiled in Balmain which attributes him with V.C., D.C.M., M.M. As already stated above, in item 11, the offi cial Royal document awarding him the Coronation Medal records his awards as V.C., M.M. Apparently the whole issue of the D.C.M came to a head while Jackson was serving in WWII and he was asked to stop wearing the D.C.M. and return it to the Army. This did not sit well with him and

on 30th January 1942 he wrote to Base Records in Canberra. In part the letter sent from his posting at Military Police Depot, Surry Hills, states, "I have no knowledge of any letter having been forwarded to my father, dated 14.4.1919, asking him to return the notifi cation sent to him concerning the award of the D.C.M. nor have I any knowledge of any such decoration having been cancelled. The award was made in early 1916 (June). I have the offi cial gazette of same and also the medal itself. I have my old pay book in which it is entered, together with other decorations. Further, it is entered on my old discharge. I have been paid for it. Still, it took some Department from early 1916 till April 1919 before it wrote my father, informimg him of cancelleation of the decoration. I have worn all my medals, including the D.C.M. on many occasions since 1916 until now, and this is the fi rst time the right to wear any of my decorations has ever been challenged. If your statement is correct, it appears as if some person or persons have 'slipped' and 'slipped' badly. I am a soldier at the present time at the above address. I will not discontinue wearing any of my ribbons, which number six. I would much prefer to apply for my discharge and have the whole matter settled in Court. As a matter of fact, I have it in the hands of my solicitor already." It seems that the matter was resolved in a fashion because Jackson re-enlisted three weeks after discharging and a letter from Base Records on 9th January 1943 advised that Jackson might surrender the decoration if the facts were explained to him however "if he is not so inclined" then it was not considered desirable to order him to do so.

The Victoria Cross is the most prized and respected of all Imperial decorations. This lot presents a chance to acquire one of the few remaining V.C.s to an Australian still in private hands. Even rarer and in fact unique is this offering of a V.C. to the youngest ever Australian to be so recognised. Accompanied by research papers confi rming all of the aforementioned facts.

Accompanying research papers record original enlistment into 17th Battalion with serial number 513, later changed to 4036 on transfer to Australian Engineers. Citation for Military Medal, ' Gallantry near Molenaareishoek on 26th September 1917. He was one of a party detailed for laying communications for the Infantry during the attack. He went forward into the outpost line, and then laid tracks back to the battalion HQ, all under heavy shell and rifl e fi re. When fi nished he assisted further by carrying the wounded to the rear. MM Citation: 'For conspicuous devotion to duty during the operations at Passchendale, East of Ypres. On 6th November 1917 Private Trew acted as Coy. runner, and when all other communications failed he successfully delivered messages to Bn. Hqrs on several occasions. The delivery of these messages necessitated his passing through two distinct enemy barrages of great intensity. He volunteered for the same duty later in the day but was ordered to desist.' L.G. 23 February 1918, p.2435 and C.G. 25 July 1918, p.1588. Pte Trew was charged and found guilty of 'Disobeying orders' or 'Insolence to an N.C.O.' on six occasions between 28 April 1916 to 23 March 1917. He was also subject of a Field General Court Martial after being charged with 'When in lawful custody escaping'. He was found guilty and sentenced to 2-months confi ned, reduced to 1-month by Brigadier Genneral Graham Thompson CB 24 May 1916. He was WIA on 24 June 1918. With copy of Service Record. Ellis Le Geyt Troughton, C.M.Z.S., F.R.Z.S. (1893 - 1974) served longer on the scientifi c staff of the Australian Museum than any other person and he was the fi rst full-time Curator of Mammals in any museum in Australia. He was a signifi cant author on the subject of mammals and discovered numerous rats, many bats, some whales and several marsupials from Australia and the Pacifi c. During the fi nal phases of WWII he served in New Guinea with the Tropical Scientifi c Section, A.I.F. investigating the mammal reservoirs of scrub typhus, on the recommendation of, and reportiing to, the U.S.A. On enlistment on 10 March 1916 he was working as a cooper and lived at Moore Park in Sydney. He embarked aboard HMAT Ajana which left Sydney on 5 July 1916 and returned to Australia on 24 August 1918. He was awarded the MM for bravery in the fi eld in France on 27 October 1917. L.G. 28 January 1918, p.1404 and C.G. No 95 on 27 June 1918, p.1391. He was WIA on 18 June 1918.

It was with this unit that he was killed-in-action at Flers on 14 November 1916. Oswald joined the 2nd Australian Light Horse and after arriving in Egypt he caught the mumps. He was transferred to the Cyclist Battalion, then to the Light Horse Training Unit and fi nally to 17 Battalion. While with this unit he was killed-in-action at Bullecourt on 15 April 1917. Served 6-months in New Guinea then discharged on 18 January 1915. Re-enlisted on 1 May 1915 and allocated service number 2713, to ANZAC on 3 October 1915, hospitalised with Malaria on 2 November 1915, joined 3 Battalion 22 August 1916 and served in France. Married in England on 7 October 1918 and RTA 24 February 1919 at the rank of Troop Sergeant. Together with N.S.W.G. Ambulance Corps Life Member Effi ciency award engraved E.L.Young on the obverse and 1942 on reverse, suspended from a NSWR Ambulance Corps bar impressed on reverse 'E.L.Young / Effi cient. 1935'. Both are in 9ct gold. National Rifl e Association of NSW medal in silver, missing small suspender ring and ribbon, engraved on reverse 'Granville Tech. Col. / F.C.Young / 1909.' Daily Mail Empire Day Rifl e Competition Medal in silver and in original case of issue by Elkington & Co. Engraved on reverse 'F.C.Young / (Captain) / 99'. The Daily Mail Empire Day Rifl e Competition was instituted in 1910 and shot at Bisley. In the inaugural year the Greater Britain Section was won by Granville Technical College Rifl e Club. (ref. O'Connor, Shooting Awards and Prize Medals to Australian Military Forces Fig.221 and p.109). F C Young is related to E L C Young. He served as 579 Lance Corporal Frederick William Cavin Young with A.N.& M.E.F. and another related member of the shooting team W C Young served as 6845 Private Will Charles Cavin Young. The three 'Young' men mentioned all had the same address for their next-of-kin on their service papers. Also included is a Returned from Active Service Badge plus a small silver crest of the City of Edinburgh. Vendor notes indicate Eric Young was also awarded the Royal Shipwreck Relief & Humane Society of NSW Medal in silver for Saving Life at Lawsons Creek on 31 January 1909 however the medal is not with the lot. Private Robert Gibson enlisted in the A.I.F. on 10 March 1915 and joined the M.E.F. on Gallipoli 16 August 1915. He was wounded by gun shot wound to the thigh on 22 August 1915 and after hospitalisation was repatriated to Australia on 8 May 1916 and was discharged on 16 September 1916. Accompanying the medals are a cased Gallipoli Commemorative Medallion 1967 and the corresponding lapel badge, both of which are engraved on the reverse 'R.Gibson', as well as a gilt Masonic jewel made from a George V penny in its presentation case. Also two different enamelled 18th Battalion colour patch lapel badges and a pair of 9ct gold cuff-links inset with the enamelled colour patch and a base metal pocket watch by A.Saunders, Sydney. MM citation: 'In the operation at Clery on the 29th/30th August 1918 this NCO showed great courage and initiative. An enemy party of about 20 bombers advanced on and bombed the post which he commanded. He conspicuously kept his Lewis Gun in action, forcing the enemy bombers to take shelter and organising his gun team as a bombing party rushed forward with them succeeding in completely destroying the enemy bombing party. He did very good work in previous operation at Bray and Suzanne as No 2 of a Lewis Gun team.' Second Supplement No 31338 to LG 13 May 1919 CG No 109 15 September 1919. Charles Stewart, born Aberdeen, Scotland and enlisted in Melbourne having served two years with Gordon Highlanders up to 1913. He embarked with 37 Battalion AIF from Melbourne on 3 June 1916 aboard HMAT Persic. He was WIA in France on 27 February 1917 (GSW to thigh), again on 10 February 1918 (GSW right shoulder & chest) and then again on 9 September 1918 (Gassed). He was awarded the MM on 25 October 1918. He was also sent a Congratulatory Card issued by the General Offi cer Commanding 4th Army British Expeditionary Force for the conspicuous manner in which he conducted himself on the battlefi eld in the face of the enemy. Lieutenant William Edward Young, NX76322, 2/3rd Australian Infantry Battalion. Military Cross citation: 'At Gona on 24 and 25 November 1942, Lt Young led a patrol on the right fl ank of the enemy positions, guided another patrol and fi nally guided his Company in an assault against prepared enemy positions. During the fi rst patrol, Lt Young shot two of the enemy and in the second patrol of the following day, he courageously moved forward with a leading scout to draw fi re and thus locate enemy weapons and in the assault on the same day, continued to give directions to his Company commander after receiving multiple wounds in his legs. His sustained coolness and bravery was a fi ne example to his men. Lt Young exhibited the same quality of leadership in action at Templeton's Crossing on 18 October 1942 and at Divi from 5 to 11 November 1942. (L.G. 22 April 1943, p.1847).
