A pair of top-20 teams in No. 20 Liberty and No. 7 Virginia will play on Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.

The non-conference matchup between the Lady Flames (3-2) and Cavaliers (3-2) is set for 1 p.m.

Liberty is coming off a 2-1 loss to Longwood in its home opener on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Virginia’s most recent result was a 2-1 home loss to Old Dominion, last Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.

SERIES HISTORY Libertyis in search of its first-ever win over Virginia. The Cavaliers own a 4-0 edge in the all-time series. The two teams last met on Sept. 12, 2016, a 2-1 victory for Virginia on its home turf.

LADY FLAMES NEWS AND NOTES• As a team, the Lady Flames are among the top 10

in the nation in five statistical categories: scoring average (No. 5, 3.78), goals per game (No. 6, 3.80), points per game (No. 7, 10.40), scoring margin (No. 8, 2.19) and assists per game (No. 10, 2.80).

• Senior Agueda Moroni leads the nation with 10 goals in 2018 and is also first in the country in goals per game (2.00) and points per game (4.60).

• Liberty has earned 32 penalty corners on the season, compared to 25 for its opponents. The Lady Flames have six short corner goals, while their counterparts only have three.

• Lady Flames goalkeeper Allison Schaefer sports a 3-2 record, 1.77 goals-against average, a .733 save percentage and 22 saves in five contests. A two-time All-BIG EAST honoree, she is the program’s all-time leader in career saves with 249.

• International players have accounted for 63.2 percent (12-of-19 goals) of the scoring for Liberty this season. Moroni (10 goals), sophomore Victoria O’Keeffe (one goal) and freshman Kemy Meidane (one goal) have each found the back of the cage.

• Moroni has now scored 10 or more goals in each of her three seasons with the Lady Flames. She scored 10 in 2016 and 19 in 2017 and has 10 already in 2018.

LAST TIME OUT The Lady Flames lost to Longwood 2-1 on Tuesday morning in a game that was moved up several hours due to weather concerns. Agueda Moroni scored Liberty’s only goal in the contest. The Lancers scored twice in the second half for the victory.

Virginia fell to Old Dominion 2-1, last Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.

SCHEDULE CHANGE Liberty was originally scheduled to play Temple on Friday prior to taking on Virginia. The game was bumped up to Thursday due to weather concerns related to Hurricane Florence. However, on Friday, it was determined that the game would be post-poned and moved to Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.

TOP 20 SQUAD/BIG EAST RANKED TEAMS Liberty is currently No. 20 in the national poll. After not playing a game last week, the Lady Flames dropped four spots in this week’s poll.

The Lady Flames opened their season on Aug. 24 with a 6-1 victory at No. 17 James Madison. They are 1-1 against ranked foes in 2018. Liberty is one of three ranked BIG EAST schools, along with No. 2 UConn and No. 15 Old Dominion.

MORONI EN FUEGO Liberty senior Agueda Moroni has been on a torrid pace to start her senior season. The native of Cor-doba, Argentina , leads the nation with 10 goals in five games, including two hat tricks (at No. 17 James Madison on Aug. 24, at Ohio on Sept. 2). Moroni has already been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week two times. Additionally, she was named the national offensive player of the week by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Aug. 29 and garnered honorable mention distinction in the national awards, last Wednesday.

CHALLENGING 2018 SCHEDULE The Lady Flames, who closed the year as the 23rd-ranked team in the nation in 2017, have now opened the year as a nationally-ranked team for a third straight season (No. 13 in 2016, No. 25 in 2017). The poll was expanded in 2017 to include 25 teams.

The Lady Flames will face nine ranked opponents in 2018. After an opening weekend that featured tough road bouts at No. 17 James Madison and No. 3 Duke, Liberty’s rugged schedule also features home bouts against No. 7 Virginia (Sunday), No. 24 Wake Forest (Sept. 30), No. 1 North Carolina (Oct. 7) and No. 9 Boston College (Oct. 21). Liberty will compete against No. 12 Syracuse in a neutral-site match on

Oct. 14 in Durham, N.C., followed by a trip to No. 2 UConn on Oct. 18. The Lady Flames will also faced No. 15 Old Dominion on the road on Oct. 5 in a BIG EAST match. The Monarchs are 6-0 this season and just recently upset Virginia 2-1 in overtime.

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR This year’s squad features six international players: Agueda Moroni (Corboba Argentina), Moniek van Aarle (Schijndel, Netherlands), Victoria O’Keeffe (Wellington, New Zealand), Kemy Meidane (Utrecht, Netherlands), Charlotte Vaanhold (Hollandsche Rading, Netherlands) and Sophie McDonald (Hara-re, Zimbabwe).

International players have accounted for 12 of Lliberty’s 19 goals, so far this season.

ROOTS This year’s Liberty field hockey team theme is “ROOTS”. For the team, this means choosing to play free, to be selfless and care more about the person next to them than themselves, to be passionate about what they do and who they do it with and to be relentless and courageous in the face of tough situations.

HISTORY LESSON The 2018 season is the eighth season of competition for the program. In its first seven years, the Lady Flames have gone from a fledgling program to a nationally-known and respected team. In just their third season (2013) of competition, they captured a conference title (NorPac) to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. In 2014, Liberty replicated the feat from the prior year, winning the NorPac Champi-onship again. They went on to win a play-in game in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship prior to being eliminated in the first round.

Liberty has seen three All-Americans in the first seven years of the program: Natalie Barr (third team, 2015), Serena Barr (second team, 2016) and Agueda Moroni (2017). In 2017, Serena Barr became the first Liberty student-athlete to be selected as both a Top 30 Honoree and Top 9 Honoree for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS The Liberty field hockey program is known for its success in the classroom. During the 2017-18 aca-demic year, the Lady Flames featured a league-best 23 BIG EAST All-Academic team selections.

In addition, the Lady Flames received the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Academic Team Award for having a team GPA of 3.0 or greater.

BIG EAST OUTLOOK For a third straight year, the Lady Flames have been picked to finish second in the conference behind UConn. Liberty earned one first-place vote and 43 points, behind the Huskies (49 points, seven first-place votes). Old Dominion and Providence, who both participated in the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Cham-pionship, comprised the third and fourth positions.

The 2018 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will be held at the Liberty Field Hockey Field for the first time. The Lady Flames finished second to UConn in the BIG EAST regular-season standings and at the conference championship in both 2016 and 2017.

SCHAEFER STANDS ATOP RECORD BOOK/MORONI CHASES MORE HISTORY Junior netminder Allison Scheafer stands alone atop the career saves listing for Lib-erty field hockey at 242. She became the program’s all-time saves leader with her 207th career save in a win at Temple, Oct. 27, 2017. Senior midfielder/forward Agueda Moroni is the team’s active leader in career goals with 39 and is now third in program history in the category.

Schaefer piled up 124 saves as a freshman and 103 as a sophomore, earning second team All-BIG EAST honors both years. In her first year with the Lady Flames, Moroni scored 10 goals. As a second-year player, she tallied 19 goals and was a second team All-American in the process.

One year after joining Liberty’s staff as an assistant coach, Nikki Parsley-Blocker was named the program’s second head coach on January 16, 2017.

Parsley-Blocker joined Liberty’s staff as an assistant coach on May 1 in time for Liberty’s first season as a part of the BIG EAST Conference. Parsley-Blocker is the second head coach in the history of the program, taking over for program founder Jodi Murphy, who left in December 2016.

In her first season as head coach, Parsley-Blocker guided Liberty to an 8-11 mark and a No. 23 national ranking at season’s end. The Lady Flames finished 5-2 in BIG EAST regular-season play for a second straight year and placed as the runner-up at the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The Lady Flames faced nine nationally ranked foes in 2017, including all four 2017 Division I Field Hockey Championship Final Four participants.

Parsley-Blocker instructed Liberty’s four All-BIG EAST selections in 2017 - Agueda Moroni (first team), Jill Bolton (first team), Ashley Dykema (first team) and Allison Schaefer (second team). Moroni also went on to become the third All-American in program history, earning NFHCA Division I All-America second team recognition.

Moroni (first team) and Bolton (second team) both garnered inclusion on the NFHCA All-South Region team. In addition, Moroni (first team), Bolton (second team) and Dykema (second team) all garnered recognition on the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Field Hockey All-State University Division team.

During her first season with the Lady Flames in fall 2016, Parsley-Blocker helped Liberty post an 8-10 record and finish in second place in the BIG EAST with a 5-2 conference mark.

Parsley-Blocker coached Liberty’s five All-BIG EAST selections in 2016, including BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Allison Schaefer and BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year Serena Barr. Barr also went on to earn NFHCA Division I All-America second team honors, becoming the second All-

American in program history.

Parsley-Blocker came to Liberty after spending the 2014 and 2015 seasons as an assistant coach at Yale.

Prior to her two-year stint at Yale, Parsley-Blocker concluded a standout career at Northwestern in 2014, where she earned second team All-America honors as a senior. Parsley-Blocker was a four-time All-West region pick and a three-time All-Big 10 selection.

A forward/midfielder, Parsley-Blocker started 76 games, totaling 33 goals and 76 points. The Wildcats went 54-27 in Parsley-Blocker’s playing career, earning a share of the Big Ten championship in 2014.

Parsley-Blocker also has extensive experience with USA Field Hockey, including playing for the U.S. at the Four Nations Tournament in New Zealand in April 2013. She also played on the junior national team at the Junior World Cup in Germany in August 2013, helping the U.S. to a seventh-place finish, tied for the best in the team’s history.

In January 2013, Parsley-Blocker played in the Australian Youth Olympics, and in September 2012 she played in the Junior Pan American Games in Mexico. She helped the U.S. to a third-place finish at the Junior Pan Am Games, leading the team with eight goals.

Parsley-Blocker has also played for the U.S. U-21 team (on a tour of England in April 2012) and the U.S. U-19 team (on a tour of Chile in April 2011). She is currently an assistant coach for the U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team.

Parsley-Blocker received her B.S. in education and social policy from Northwestern in 2014. She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times, was on the Dean’s List three times and was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

Parsley-Blocker is originally from Milford, Del. Parsley-Blocker, formerly Parsley, is married to Liberty Assistant Athletic Trainer Hugh Blocker, who serves as the athletic trainer for the Lady Flames and Flames cross country and track & field programs. The couple was married in Jan. 2018.

LIBERTY FIELD HOCKEY FIELDServing as the home field for Liberty’s field hockey program, the Liberty Field Hockey Field opened in Sept. 2011. The facility has a seating capacity of 750 and features a Poligras Olympia COOLPLUS turf system, a water-based surface preferred for field hockey competition. The Liberty Field Hockey Field will play host to the 2018 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship for the first time, Nov. 2 and 4.
