TOPIC: Training & Orientation on 4-H Sci-Tech Programs

Individual Learning

SYNOPSIS: 4-H Sci-Tech – 2 to 4 hours depending upon local preferences Provide an overview of programming to include offerings in robotics, aerospace (rocketry, hot air balloons, gliders, etc.), geospatial technology, and potential competitive, camp and other special events or activities. Discuss grant opportunities that are occasionally available from NASA, National 4-H Council, and others and how to pursue them. Consider program planning for local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in regard to utilizing local resources and conducting special STEM field days, day camps, and other approaches. This part of the session will provide hands-on experience with various resources available to 4-H based on local preferences; robotics, rocketry, hot air balloons, etc. The 4-H Sci-Tech trailer may also be available with an orientation to its potential use.

Innovations in Learning & Engagement – 30 minutes to 1 hour Engaging and retaining youth in grades 7th and 8th and in high school in 4-H is a significant challenge. Traditional ways of engaging young people may be improved and potentially expanded with new approaches but what will that take? Use of digital technology will be a critical factor in meeting this challenge as well but what does that look like? This part of the session will focus on what is happening in the counties attending the session and how those things might be improved. The discussion will also go into new approaches including potential online learning and how that might appeal to the older youth audience.

Program Planning and Evaluation – 30 minutes to 1 hour In the overall program planning process for CYI a logic model was developed that can be utilized at state and local levels. The process of developing the logic model and then applying it to program planning helps to identify appropriate, practical and measurable goals and objectives. With appropriate objectives planning for evaluation is more readily accomplished. A brief discussion of the process can be helpful in understanding more about program planning and evaluation. SUPPLY LIST: Participants may bring resources from kits that may be in their respective county offices to include robotics, rocketry, geospatial, design solutions or other areas. Note the primary topics of the session under consideration and bring supplies as appropriate. If more in depth orientation or training on specific areas is needed please contact the specialist directly. RESOURCES: Robotics Aerospace Geospatial General:
