Two years after the purchase of the Les Cases de
Barbens 135 ha property in Lerida (Spain), this is now
beginning to take shape as a reference point in Semillas
Fitó’s future strategy in corn improvement 2013 was
the year in which the Semillas Fitó research plan
was developed in corn culture The company sought
to achieve new varieties adapted to the conditions in
the south of Europe, new technologies applied to corn
culture (watering systems, fertiliser, sowing densities,
and resistance to disease, etc ), research into alternative
crops (alfalfa, sunflower, sorghums, hay, etc )

We are visited in Les Cases de Barbens
Numerous Fitó customers and distributors have visited
us in recent months, taking advantage of the excellent
state of the countryside in the Les Cases de Barbens
property The visitors took part in an initial talk in which
the route around the property and the future projects
were explained, before going into the field to see the
varieties
Recently too, work started on building the modern seed storage and processing centre in the same place The work, which involves a
strong investment from the company, is expected to last two years

DEFI Genetics
On the past 30 October, Fribourg (Switzer-
land) was witness to the creation as of the
1st of January 2014 of the new company
DEFI Genetics, which will be held by the
multinationals DSP (with 45% of the sha-
res) and Semillas Fitó (with 55% of the
shares)
DEFI Genetics is developed with the aim of carrying out a programme of corn parental selection and hybrid cross for the early cycle
markets in the centre and north of Europe This new company culminates the process started two years ago with an agreement of
intentions signed between DSP and Fitó to achieve early corn varieties for the 200-300 FAO cycles and which allowed DSP to achieve
new funding for its corn program and Semillas Fitó to achieve its independence in early germ plasma
DSP is a multinational engaged in seed improvement, production and commercialisation In addition to corn, DSP also works with
crops such as wheat, triticale, species of hay and soya in cooperation with the Agroscope test stations DSP was founded in 1994 and at
the present time works in Switzerland with varieties that are marketed in more than 20 countries of Europe, North and South America
and New zealand
Semillas Fitó and DSP create DEFI Genetics, a company engaged in the genetic improvement of corn for the centre and north of Europe.
