Provision of a Data Rich Environment
Provision of a Data Rich Environment
The City spends a great deal of time, effort and money to keep mapping, property, address and other databases current.
The standards and procedures used to maintain these assets were established to promote widespread corporate use.
Our data is the most current information available. No other sources, be they public or private, have the “quality of data” available that our business systems require. The term “quality of data” includes: accuracy, currency, completeness and integration.

Application NeedsApplication Needs
Applications that rely on mapping data can be seen as evolving entities that rely on a steady “diet” of data.
Data solutions provided by vendors are rarely, if ever, adequate to meet the City’s needs over it’s entire operating requirements.

1. How many Municipalities know what they own?
2. Of those that have an idea of what they own, how are they positioned to have reliable status of the asset?
3. Is your group managing risk? For sidewalks, can they state categorically they
meet minimum provincial maintenance standards? Will their inspections stand up in a court of law to
defend a “trip” claim? Is the Operating budget being spent in proactive
rather than reactive way?

* Development time and ongoing maintenance are non-charged activities. Geomatics had already tested the GPS integration in Microstation. Total development time of approximately 30days for a single developer.
Purchased 25 CFH2 Units for a multitude of user groups that include;Noisewalls , LED Retrofit, Bridge inspection etc.

Lessons LearnedLessons Learned
Inconsistencies between individual inspectors; How they interpret and apply criteria Four (4) students were sufficient to walk 2500km of
sidewalks in 3 months
GPS not always optimal depending of area and cover, the use of the base map (selecting a point) is very important
Testing with Gobi2000 (3G) modem underway Cost of transmitting record attributes Cost of transmitting images - 6GB/Month plan
