ANNUAL SUMMARY 2014

Executive Summary

This past year, FIE staff undertook a vast and varied schedule of engage-ment activities – all with a view to continually developing ways to best serve our partner and student constituencies. FIE’s lead role in the establishment of the Association of Study Abroad Providers in Ireland (ASAPI) in 2014 has been a key part of this.

Our summer London-Amman Peace and Conflict Resolution drew an excep-tional cohort of students from across the country. It is our aim to help develop these students as future leaders in a turbulent world.

Our London Study Center and housing facilities are in top form after extensive renovations over the past few years. London’s academic provision continues to receive the highest of marks from our accrediting and oversight bodies. When students aren’t in the classroom, they are engaging in a wide variety of academic internship, social, and educational activities to prepare them for success in the global community.

And, as ever, FIE takes pride in living its values. Whether staff, students, and faculty are raising money for charities, creating a supportive environment for diversity, or questioning and acting upon issues of sustainability, we continue to embed our values in everything we do.

I hope you find this summary informative.

Dear partners, colleagues and friends:

Thank you for another great year. With your partnership, collaboration, and support, FIE continues to go from strength to strength in offering engaging, quality overseas learning opportunities for students in London, Dublin, and Amman. International experience is one of the most important components of a 21st century education, a belief both Generation Study Abroad and FIE hold closely. As a proud supporter of this initiative, we strive to reach students from all areas of the community to provide the skills necessary to thrive in our global economy. We are pleased to know that our students agree – with an overall 94% approval rating on study abroad rating sites.

Our student population is a truly international one. In 2014, across our sites in London, Dublin and Amman, FIE welcomed students from 44 different nationalities. From Bahrain to Vietnam, our global classroom has global reach. At the top of the list are: USA, China, India, UK, and Spain. Our 2014 US student profile is also diverse. Almost 8% identify as Asian or Pacific Islander, about 5% identify as Latino, and 4% as Black and African American.

Student engagement in service reached great heights in 2014 with 188 students in London participating in voluntary activities and service learning. In Dublin, over 22 volunteer opportu-nities, mobile seminars, and study tour options were attended by students over the course of the year.

London students have the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized youth volunteering certificate through vInspired as a part of their experience. In 2014, 56 students engaged with the vInspired program and earned their certificate.

5 staff members also took advantage of FIE’s employee volunteering scheme, for a total of 7 days of donated volunteer time.

Commitment to the Environment

FIE continues to be on the forefront of engaging our students, faculty, and staff in sustainable practices.

The Spring Student Switch Off (SSO) competi-tion was extremely successful with a 15.9% average reduction in electricity use compared to the same period in 2013 and a high level of participation from students. As a result of taking part in the SSO, FIE was awarded with a GoAbroad Award for Innovation in Sustainability at the NAFSA 2014 conference in San Diego.

Our award was also mentioned during the Green Impact National Special Awards Ceremony in a section called ‘Celebrating winners from across the UK’ at NUS’ Sustainability Programmes Roundtable event.

A case study, featuring FIE’s SSO competition and wider sustainability initiatives, has also been included in the AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Educa-tion) Case Study Database as an example of good practice.

While study abroad will always have the academic experience at its core, students at FIE are offered an extensive activity calendar including co-curricular, extra-curricular, and volunteer opportunities to complement their overall experience.

As part of the dual-city Peace & Conflict studies program, FIE students attended the biennial Anglo Jordanian Society Fundraiser Dinner in London. The Anglo Jordanian Society is a registered UK charity that celebrates the long relation-ship between the United Kingdom and Jordan. The event was attended by HRH The Duke of Kent and HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan.

Accompanied by Professor Paul Arthur and FIE staff, the evening allowed students the opportunity to engage in dialogue about the Middle East in preparation for their departure the following day for the second phase of their studies in Amman, Jordan.

During the course of the evening, HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal gave an informative speech about religious complexi-ties and peace initiatives, and mapped Jordan’s place in the Middle East and the world.

Spotlight On: Dublin

In Fall 2014, FIE Dublin welcomed our first ever iCharleston program. Students shared classes and co-curricular activities with fellow FIE first-year students from the Franklin and Marshall College and the Drexel Freshmen Frontiers programs. Integration of all three of these programs, both academically and socially, was a huge success.

Since 2007, FIE has partnered with Dublin Business School (DBS) for its semester and summer programs. In 2014, FIE was asked to join DBS’ Board of Studies to further develop our relationship.

In 2014, the Association of Study Abroad Providers in Ireland (ASAPI) was formed and FIE was at the forefront of this development.

The Association of Study Abroad Providers in Ireland aims and goals include:

• To bring a unified voice to the Irish study abroad sector

• To serve as a platform for shared information, staff training, development, and support for everyone who impacts the study abroad experi-ence

• To contribute to discussions with relevant govern-ment agencies on regulatory guidelines

• To raise awareness of the sector amongst government agencies

• To deliver improved standards throughout Irish study abroad in addressing the needs of the present and demands of the future.

(ASAPI Mission Statement).

FIE received reaccreditation from the British Accreditation Council (BAC) in 2014. The BAC review process examines all aspects of FIE’s UK provision, including facilities, teaching, learning and student support with particular attention to health and safety standards in all classroom, housing and social spaces, as well as the effectiveness of emergency and crisis procedures.

In 2014 the Inspection Report, compliance with BAC accreditation was “fully met” in all areas, including: Management, Staffing and Administration, Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Student Welfare, and Premises and Facilities.

FIE received a commendable outcome from the monitoring visit by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education in 2013 and submitted an annual return in March 2014 that demonstrated that we are continuing to maintain academic standards and enhance the quality of student learning opportunities and information about learning opportunities.

FIE’s School of Record, Drexel University, provides support, advice and educational oversight on an ongoing basis, including new course and faculty review and annual re-review of selected courses.

In 2014 FIE submitted its Interim QUIP Report. The response received from the Forum on Education Abroad was positive and stated:

“Foundation for International Education (FIE) continues to be in substantial conformity with the Forum on Education Abroad’s Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad and demonstrates continuing commitment to quality improvement of its education abroad programs. Specifically we note FIE has responded to quality improvement suggestions made in the QUIP review by implementing improvements in the areas of assessment, program evaluation, student support and increased course offerings, among other areas.”
