By combining thermal hydrolysis (a THELYS® process) with down- stream biological treatment, BIOTHELYS® can treat all types of sludge, whether industrial or municipal: > during thermal hydrolysis, a part of the suspended solids is dis- solved, producing a more readily biodegradable liquid sludge; > downstream, the biodegradable matter is usually treated using anaerobic digestion. BIOTHELYS® fits perfectly into the wastewater treatment plant and offers the following advantages: > reduction in the quantity of surplus sludge, whilst improving the quality; > reduction in sludge volume by improving its dewatering charac- teristics: final dryness of 28-35% after centrifugation and 35-50% after dewatering with a filterpress, without liming; > control of sludge removal costs; > reduction of digester size by feeding it with more concentrated sludge (> 10% of dry solids) and reducing the retention time; > increase in biogas production; > multiple recycling options for the residual sludge.
