A measurable impactCrane is providing the sea container market with a lighter weight Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) panel liner to replace stainless steel in the construction of refrigerated sea containers.

Crane Composites ArmorTuf-NXT is 61% lighter than stainless steel per square meter.

In total, specifying Crane Composites' ArmorTuf liner will save you 193kg (426lbs) per container versus stainless steel wall and aluminum ceiling liners.

With 50% of container vessel operating costs linked to fuel, the impact is notable.

What does this mean for your fleet?• Lower fuel consumption of vessel• Fuel savings of $74 per year per

container based on 30,000 average miles per year

• Meet road weight limitations• Limited draft port issues

A look at operating costsMaintenance and repair costs are a significant percentage of a container's operating costs. ArmorTuf-NXT line has an embossed finish that provides an impact and scratch abrasion resistant surface, resulting is less damage and fewer repairs for refrigerated sea containers.

When compared to stainless steel, repairing Crane Composites ArmorTuf-NXT lined containers can net a 35% reduction in costs through fewer and less expensive repairs.

Test ResultsBall Impression TestThe ball impression test determines what permanent deflection various materials experience if a specific ball shaped object was pressed against it at various pressures. In this test, a test rig was set up with a ½′′ ball on a hydraulic press, capable of measuring force in pounds. A sample of each material was subjected to 100, 200 and 300 pounds of force.

The test simulates the impact on sidewall liners from forklift or cargo loading. The test proved that composite materials, such as FRP, tend to bend then recover to their original form. On the other hand, the test results showed that although stainless steel is a very tough, durable product; when it is impacted it tends to take a permanent set based on the amount of force exerted.

What does this mean for your fleet?• Avoid common problems faced

by stainless steel containers, including: dents, delamination, and difficult and expensive repairs.

• A durable surface for your container with enhanced abrasion resistance, attributed to the embossed surface

Lower your Environmental ImpactA Life Cycle Assessment* (LCA) study comparing cradle-to-grave of an frp Sea Container Liner System and a Stainless Steel Sea Container Liner System showed that the frp Liner System has a lower environmental impact over a Stainless Steel Liner System.

The frp system has lower impact values in ten of the eleven analyzed LCA impact categories, and in seven of those eleven, frp values were less than 50% of the stainless steel system.

*Life Cycle Comparative Assessment of FRP Liner Versus Stainless Steel Liner Used In Refrigerated Sea Container, Final Report June 12, 2012.

Take steps to reach your CO2 savings goalsAn ArmorTuf container has a 41% lower CO2 emissions impact than a Stainless Steel container. The lower environmental impact of an ArmorTuf container will allow your company to be steps closer towards becoming a more sustainable company with a lower carbon footprint, through a more environmentally conscious solution.

We put more in...SAVING

Total Cost of Ownership When considering total cost of ownership, ArmorTuf liner proves that initial container cost is just the beginning of the story. Over the life of the container, the operating costs can be equal to or greater than the new container cost.

ArmorTuf offers a number of advantages that stainless steel can't match, particularly when it comes to the ability to withstand the rigors of loading and unloading, abrasion due to cargo contact, and other potential sources of damage and costly repairs. All in all, ArmorTuf liners result in savings over the life of the container, than result in a significant return on investment:

• Less Weight | Save 193 kg (426 lbs) per container, leading to significant fuel savings• Less Downtime | Fewer and simpler repairs reduce days out of service• Lower Maintenance and Repair Costs | 35% reduction in costs due to fewer & less

expensive repairs• Lower Carbon Footprint | 41% lower CO2 emissions impact per container, compared to

stainless steel

Savings in PerspectiveIn order to better determine your potential savings with specifying ArmorTuf, consider the following scenario:

• Refrigerated container fleet of 10,000 units

• Replacement cycle of 12 years/unit

• 6 trips per year per container (loaded or empty)

• 5,000 miles per trip

• $0.08 per KWH

• 35% reduction in M&R costs

• No growth, replacement of 833 containers each year through 2027
