What is Finger Painting?An art technique that the paint is applied with the fingers, and the use of hands and lower arm. Use of the entire arm smoothes the paint on the paper prior to more detailed modeling with the fingers and other parts of the hand.

The History

Ruth Faison Shaw introduced finger painting as an art education. She developed her techniques in Rome, Italy, before patenting a safe non-toxic paint in 1931. After developing her expressive medium for children, Shaw devoted her attention to the therapeutic benefits of finger-painting.

- 6 bright colors- Some use instant pudding to use as finger print to eliminate children putting their fingers in their mouths

Big Idea: - Students will gain

and develop fine motor and visual skills. Finger painting is a form of “messy play” which provides a variety of sensory experiences for students.

Ideas for Unit PlanIdea #1: Mixing Colors Students will be in groups of

3 and share a set of primary paints and combine colors to create more colors.

Major Understanding:Students will learn about

primary and secondary colors. Students will also learn about sensory and feel the texture of paint on their fingers.
