A LETTER FROM PRESIDENT MARTIN

Dr. Mirta M. MartinFHSU President

Dear Tiger Family,

From the moment I stepped foot on our campus, it was clear that Tiger pride

permeates every inch of Fort Hays State University and the surrounding

communities. I hear certain refrains being repeated, such as “Once a Tiger,

always a Tiger!” or “I am who I am because of Fort Hays State!” I find these

expressions of gratitude heartwarming and inspiring.

With state funding uncertain and the cost of education on the rise, your

generosity has never been more important. During times like this, families

come together to support each other. I am asking each of you to please make

a stand and give to the FHSU family. On behalf of the college, our students,

faculty and staff, please consider making a difference in the lives of the next

generation of Tigers!

We live in a world where an education has never been more valuable. Please

know that your contributions matter. Your generosity creates opportunities

for all those who attend this great institution.

It is an honor to serve as president of Fort Hays State University and I thank

you for all you do!

Supporting Fort Hays State’s hard-working students is easy.These individuals made the most of their gifts by working with knowledgeable staff at your FHSU Foundation.

“We’re happy to give back to Fort Hays State through a legacy gift. Pledging a portion of our estate to the university was a simple process and the staff at the FHSU Foundation has been great to work with.”

“Establishing a scholarship was much easier than we ever expected. One night, my wife and I talked about the idea of creating scholarships to reflect our individual interests. We decided to send an email to the FHSU Foundation and within two days we had a draft of what our scholarships would look like. It was a simple, yet exciting process.”

“I heard of an FHSU alum who left his life insurance policy to FHSU and it motivated me to do the same. As a professor, I see firsthand how hard- working our students are and I am extremely happy to support them. They certainly deserve it!”

“Inspired by the commitment shown by our parents to students at Fort Hays State, we decided to call upon the FHSU Foundation to create a fund of excellence in their honor. The fund supports students through out-of-classroom experiences, which we feel are key to a well-rounded college experience.”

POINTS OF PRIDE

To reduce energy costs, Fort Hays State University added two wind turbines, just west of the main campus. Their combined energy output covers roughly 97% of all energy consumption on the FHSU campus.

/ / THE WIND FARM:

// HACKATHON:

// ATHLETICS:

Dedicated in the fall of 2014, this modern, high-tech building is located in the heart of campus. Nestled on the banks of Big Creek between Tomanek Hall and Gross Coliseum/Cunningham Hall, the building hosts FHSU’s Department of Informatics, the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technologies (CTELT) and the Virtual College.

/ / HAMMOND HALL:

In the fall of 2014, a team of FHSU students was selected to travel to the Microsoft corporate headquarters in Redmond, WA, to compete in the Microsoft Hackathon—an app development competition for students. Among teams from 12 universities across the country, the team from Fort Hays State placed 2nd and won $20,000.

Fort Hays State is proud to support 18 athletic programs, including football, women’s and men’s basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball, women’s and men’s soccer, and others. Of the nearly 5,000 on-campus students, more than 450 are student athletes.

Compared to similar sized universities in the country, FHSU’s intercollegiate program is one of the most successful and extensive, boasting many All-American athletes, as well as eight national championships.

“It was truly an amazing experience,” said Brittani Tran, an FHSU team member. “We were not expecting to place at all with so many good teams competing. What pulled us through was teamwork. We relied on everyone’s strengths and used them to our advantage.”
