Writing in your discipline is much different than most writing that students have done before - but the students need help. Consider one or more of the following (and Joyce is happy to help with them!):

Help Students Write in Your Discipline

Use class time to teach students how to write in your discipline

Provide annotated models from former student papers that illustrate your expecta-tions for writing in your discipline

Come to an FHSS Writing Lab staff meeting to “train” the student writing advisors about your expectations for a particular writing assignment – then require your students to bring drafts of their paper to the Writing Lab

Invite student writing advisors to come to your class to teach a mini-lesson on your disciplinary style (Turabian, Chicago, APA, ASA)

Get Better Results From Student Writing AssignmentsMaybe you are not getting the results you want from student papers. Maybe it is a good time to revise your writing assignments or grading rubrics. (Joyce also loves to help with these!):

Increase the number of opportunities for students to write without adding to your grading time

Create grading rubrics that represent your goals for student writing

Refine writing prompts so that they explicitly guide students

Require students to bring a draft of their papers to the FHSS Writing Lab; Provide minimum requirements (e.g., “Take a minimum 5-page draft . . .”; “Brainstorm with a student advisor to solidify your thesis . . .”; etc.)
