INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION DAY 1 IN REVIEW

Friday July 06 2012

by Maha Aziz

Key Club International Convention (ICON) has been a wonderful experience so far Today

we had our opening session with speaker Eden Sher who plays a character on the TV show

The Middle She gave an inspirational speech on believing in oneself and never giving up

on your dream Next clubbers were allowed to eat lunch either in Downtown Disney or in

the hotel Promptly at 200 pm caucusing for the new international board candidates

began Though it was four hours long it was enjoyable and went by quickly Afterwards

clubbers ate dinner swam went to Downtown Disney and did other things

From 930 pm to 1130 pm clubbers danced for The Eliminate Project and raised money

to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the Earth a disease which still

takes the life of one baby every 9 minutes Through some creative fundraising at the dance

we raised US $53800 through the MNT Minutes that were held throughout the dance

where clubbers donated as much spare change as they could in one minute Some

clubbers also created a new dance move called the Eliminate move We were

disappointed when the dance was over The first day of ICON was a rewarding experience

and we are all looking forward to tomorrow Key Club is simply the best organization in the

world

Joining key club is a lot more than participating in events only to

receive service credits itrsquos a learning experience that I will carry out

through my life and itrsquos a way to help others while having a great time with

friends During a recent Key Club event I have attended the Dog Run my

fellow key clubbers and I aided the staff of a dog park where we helped

clean and paint the railings of the dog park located in Forest Park We

scrapped off the old paint from the railings and gave it a fresh new black

paint coat Inside the actual dog park we cut down the overgrown grass and

picked up the excessive pebbles on the area in which the dogs run This

would avoid any injury to the dog when they run wild playing with one

another With the interaction of the key club members we felt as if the work

we did were not work at all We enjoyed each otherrsquos company as we

painted and sang along to songs

The most memorable moment I would have to say I experienced

during this event was the encounter of the numerous dogs that were there

Firstly I thought the dog run park would be close for the day since the park

was occupied by our cleaning but several dog owners and their dogs

decided to come out for a fun day in the dog run park But that was not a

very fun day for me because I am petrified of dogs I remember talking to

my friend and then suddenly I glanced behind me and saw there was dog

coming my way I immediately jetted up the stairs and ran as far away as I

could from the dog Other than that terrifying encounter which I will never

forget I enjoyed mostly spending the day with my friends and my mother

who also attended the event I honestly enjoyed giving back in any little way

I can to my community Also everyone was from different schools so it was

very interesting to interact and meet new key club members in the same

division as myself After the work was done we all gathered to take a group

picture of our division members who participated in this event

The Dog Run

On June 23 2012 we had our annual Divisional Training Conference a leadership training program for both club officers and members Even though the program had so many beneficial workshops for us it only cost us $8 (which is a good thing for us since we didnrsquot have to pay that much) There were so many workshops being held at the program but unfortunately only three officers were able to attend the event so we werenrsquot able to attend every single workshop Hopefully everyone will attend the Fall Rally and help us get as much information from all the workshops Nonetheless the workshops that we attended gave us much valuable information Our club officers and I received many ideas from past and present leaders of Key Club Some of the information include how to run our club successfully what our duties as officers and members were how to be a successful leader how to interact with members and etc

I am really grateful for our Division for hosting the DTC mainly because this event helped me build a better relationship with Stephen Mnere (club Secretary) and Cindy Win (Club Editor) This event made us closer than before

Like any other events we had ample opportunity to make new friends because not only did our high school attend the event but also 10 other high schools attended Besides new people there was food too

There are many reasons to love this event So many important information gained new friends made relationship built foods and various stuffs were available for only $8 How cool is that I hope everyone attends this event next

year

By Sonam Sherpa

DTC (Divisional Training Conference)

Committee System Another new policy that new Executive Board has brought this year is the

ldquoCommittee Systemrdquo We will be doing the Committee System starting this year

Why are we creating a Committee System

- To create more Leadership position for the members

- To make our club more organized

-To compete against other club in LTC

Members are not required but it is recommended to join at

least one committee (Join the one that interests you) But why

should you join the Committee

- Did you know that Committee Chairs and Committee Members are

recognized as leaders So it holds more value in college application than

just being a member

We are creating 5 committees in our club this year and you can

join any of them All of these committees have their own goals to

complete Committee Chair for each committee will be determined

through the Membership Recruitment Competition More information

will be released in future newsletter

decided to come out for a fun day in the dog run park But that was not a

very fun day for me because I am petrified of dogs I remember talking to

my friend and then suddenly I glanced behind me and saw there was dog

coming my way I immediately jetted up the stairs and ran as far away as I

could from the dog Other than that terrifying encounter which I will never

forget I enjoyed mostly spending the day with my friends and my mother

who also attended the event I honestly enjoyed giving back in any little way

DTC (Divisional Training Conference)

Committee System Another new policy that new Executive Board has brought this year is the

ldquoCommittee Systemrdquo We will be doing the Committee System starting this year

Why are we creating a Committee System

- To create more Leadership position for the members

- To make our club more organized

-To compete against other club in LTC

Members are not required but it is recommended to join at

least one committee (Join the one that interests you) But why

should you join the Committee

- Did you know that Committee Chairs and Committee Members are

recognized as leaders So it holds more value in college application than

just being a member

We are creating 5 committees in our club this year and you can

join any of them All of these committees have their own goals to

complete Committee Chair for each committee will be determined

through the Membership Recruitment Competition More information

will be released in future newsletter

DTC (Divisional Training Conference)

Committee System Another new policy that new Executive Board has brought this year is the

ldquoCommittee Systemrdquo We will be doing the Committee System starting this year

Why are we creating a Committee System

- To create more Leadership position for the members

- To make our club more organized

-To compete against other club in LTC

Members are not required but it is recommended to join at

least one committee (Join the one that interests you) But why

should you join the Committee

- Did you know that Committee Chairs and Committee Members are

recognized as leaders So it holds more value in college application than

just being a member

We are creating 5 committees in our club this year and you can

join any of them All of these committees have their own goals to

complete Committee Chair for each committee will be determined

through the Membership Recruitment Competition More information

will be released in future newsletter
