Front Row Foundation This year at our 64th Annual Leadership Training Conference, we had the pleasure of having Jon Vroman, co-founder of the Front Row Foundation, serve as our keynote speaker. We are glad to endorse his organization as one of our district projects this year. Front Row Foundation was born in a community of close-knit family and friends who wanted to make a difference for those braving critical health challenges. Front Row volunteers do what they do because of their deep belief in the healing powers of the mind and its immeasurable ability to nourish the human spirit. It is our belief that a group of people united in passion and common purpose can have the power to provide life changing moments for others in need, and transform the quality of their life. For those who are facing critical health issues, any positive experience, especially those that involve their favorite team or musician, can be a life-changing experience. Our dream is to provide a Front Row experience that will allow individuals to set aside any physical or emotional challenges while they celebrate the beauty and emotional energy of life. Great moments in our lives are remembered forever. Together we can, and will create lasting memories for those in need; one positive, incredible and life-changing experience at a time.

Local Causes Just like the name reads, Local Causes encompass any service or fundraising projects done for your local homes, schools and communities. Collecting towels and blankets for a family whose house has burned down or raising money for a community member with cancer are only two examples of the many local causes that you and your club can take part in. Local Causes serve to encourage members not only to serve, but to take the many opportunities available to establish long lasting relationships with local facilities and organizations, which will allow for the spread of Key Club's spirit of service in your local community. Together, let's make our communities a better place. For service or fundraising ideas, please check our Paperwork and Resources tab.

Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation Lyme Disease was brought to Kiwanis' attention during 2000-01 when New York District Kiwanis Governor John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. It is a scary possibility to consider for New York State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the summer months. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. The spirochete which causes Lyme Disease can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection. the majority of people who aretreated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long-term problems. Peoplewho are not treated until later may have a more complicated outcome.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was one of past district projects. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. Their vision is to be the world leader in advancing the treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children. This vision will be pursued by providing outstanding patient care; by conducting basic, translational and clinical research designed to elucidate biological mechanisms, understand disease pathogenesis, improve diagnosis, enhance treatment outcome, prevent diseases and minimize adverse consequences of treatment; and by educating health care and scientific research professionals. Through these efforts they seek to cure and enhance the quality of life for an increasing proportion of children who come to them for treatment, and by expanding and sharing knowledge, to advance treatment of children with catastrophic diseases worldwide, while developing strategies to prevent catastrophic diseases in children.

Some Committee Chairs have also been placed as Committee Members on other committees. If you are in this situation, it’s because it is necessary for you to be under that committee since it fits your job description and will help improve your club. Divisional Training Conference Committee: Will begin to work as of next week! The committee will only exist until August 23rd, two months after the event has occurred. ALL PRESIDENTS: Are under the presidents committee, this is not optional.

WE ARE RANK ONE IN DIVISION 8A! The officers and I are very proud for this achievement! Also school is so close by! We are excited to recruit new members to the key club world! We did two events this month- The Summer Streets event and the China Beautification Day! We hope to have more events when school starts and we hope to meet new people. We also updated information about the committees. We want our club to be a really phenomenal club and committees are the best way for dedicated members to have more responsibility in the club. We hope everyone is satisfied with the committees they choose to be in and we hope that everyone will gain more leadership skills through the committees. Here’s to a great school year!

Summer Streets

By Sonam Sherpa

On three consecutive Saturdays in the summer, Department of

Transportation held this awesome event called Summer Streets in New

York City’s streets. It was opened for everyone to play, run, walk and bike.

This event’s goal was to help New Yorkers celebrate the most valuable

public space – our streets. On August 18th, Forest Hills High School Key

Club, with our Division 8-A, volunteered to help out during the event by

marshaling the routes and directing the participants. Surprisingly, instead

of very hot weather or rainy weather, the weather was fairly good: breezy

wind and warm temperature. Being able to enjoy New York City’s beauty

and being able to cheer for participants while volunteering, we found the

event to be so much fun. Participants especially were enjoying the event

through various interesting means such as free yoga classes, free dance

lessons, zip-line, etc. at several different stations. At certain times, we

wanted to stop volunteering and start participating in the event. But, at

the same time, we didn't want to give up volunteering because we were

enjoying it through cheering, and getting free food and volunteer gifts.

Besides volunteering, we had ample time to socialize with members

from our club as well as members from our division. As mentioned earlier,

the event was so fun and all of us enjoyed it very much! I will most likely be

participating in this event next year too! Overall, the event was an

excellent experience and we want to you to have those experiences too,

so come to this event next summer! I hope to see you next time!

China Beautification Day

By Perry Chu

On August 22nd 2012, a Beautification day was held in China Town around

Canal Street. The way I got to participate in this event was actually amusing. I was

really bored in the morning and asked around if there were any significant events

going on and a friend took me to the beautification day held in China Town. It was

a great experience and I felt so good about myself after the event. I thought the

event was well-organized and was successful. The streets were clean because of us,

teens, who actually took the time out of our homes and made a difference in the

community trying to put our efforts to make it a better place for people to live in.

What was most surprising was once people actually saw our cleaning the streets,

they actually helped us and also participated, which was a kind thing to do. During

the event, the staff controlling the event had us grouped together, depending on

the place we came from in the district or the organization we were part of. The

room was crowded and there was a lot of screaming and shouting. It was nice to

hear all the enthusiasm and all the spirits of people coming together as one. We

actually accomplished a lot on that day and made an impact on most of the

people living in that specific area. We cleaned up to 10 blocks or more. Although it

was a lot of walking, it was really worth it. I realized during the clean-up that people

thought of it as a treasure hunt because they were really amazed on the items they

saw. Most of them kept what they found. Unfortunately, I wasn’t so lucky and

besides treasure, I found the opposite of what I wanted to see or find. The

organization really spread its message out and most folks were inspired in the youth,

us, because we are actually making a difference and we attracted much attention

to help out as well. After the clean-up, we were asking people to vote and many of

us were rejected, but others took it into consideration and voted. It was a big

experience because even though I didn’t make friends with the people I asked for

the vote, I feel like there is a small bond between that person that would soon grow

in the mere future and me. I honestly believe there is a bond between us. I was

influenced to come out and do something with my life. I bet that others can be

easily influenced to do the same thing as well because everyone has a heart and

deep in their hearts, there is a space where people would finally understand what

society has turned into and would try to change it into the better.
