Workshop Update 3 What We’re Up To 7-11
President’s Message By Sandy Sutton
Hello everyone! As our society starts to get going again, your Board has been considering ways for us to come together to support our craft and maintain our friendships during a time
when we still cannot meet face to face.
To facilitate this, we will be conducting a Guild meeting by Zoom
next Monday evening at our regular meeting time. You will need to download Zoom to your computer before then to access the
meeting. A big thank you to Trudy Cleveland, Michelle Howe, Mary Howland and Mary Lu Booker for heading up this effort for
the Guild!
We had to postpone our Auction that had been scheduled for May and have decided to hold it next year instead of the Quilt
show. This of course impacts our income for the current year, but I want to reassure everyone that due to our reserve funds,
we will have no problem paying our bills and continuing our
activities.
You should have received the current directory in the mail. Thank you to everyone who helped with this effort! Please keep
in touch with one another, and for our new members, everyone
now has your information!
I am looking forward to getting my activities back on a calendar, providing the structure for my days, weeks and months. It seems like I have been living in a time warp where it is hard to
keep track of what day it is, let alone the date! The good news is
that I have been getting a lot done on my projects!
And next Monday we will be hearing from some members about what they have been accomplishing during our time at home.
Looking forward to seeing you on Monday! And I am planning to
have a haircut before then!

Auction Update
By Julia Renaud
For the Calendar Girls Auction Committee
As we reported in the May Newsletter we had to cancel our Auction for this year
because of the Virus. We are returning all of the quilts that were donated to us. Thank
you to everyone who donated quilts.
Below are 3 quilts that were donated but we are unable to locate the owners because
there is no label on the quilts and there was no registration form with them. If you
recognize your quilt please contact Julia Renaud at 949-306-5450. They are beautiful
quilts so please contact Julia so she can get them to their owners.

Coming Attractions—Workshop Update: By Juliet Sandquist and Mary Lou Booker
There is not much to report on workshops this month as things are still a bit unsettled. Those who paid for the Trudy Cleveland workshop and the Anne Shaw
workshop will have their fees refunded. We are in the process of contacting the speakers who were scheduled for the rest of the year and are exploring possible options
for providing workshops as we move forward. Thank you for your patience!
2020 Guild Challenge
Winter Wonderland
By Pam Hadfield and Trudy Cleveland
We hope you are working on your Winter Wonderland Challenge. You still have plenty of time to complete it. Turn in time will be September 14, 2020 at guild or at a drop off place. If we are not back in the school by October, we will still have the Challenge in some way, shape, or form. Challenge quilts will still be judged by a qualified judge so we can enter the top 8 into the 2021 Ultimate Guild Challenge. So, take advantage of this down time in our lives and create an exciting Winter Wonderland
piece.

Sunshine and Shadows
This information is being shared with you in case you would like to
contact members or send cards to them.
Sunshine
Ursula Hartunian has recovered.
Shadows
Sandy Ingraham fell and broke her hip during her morning walk on May 22nd, and had surgery on May 24th at Hoag NPB. She has been transferred to the Acute Rehab Unit of Hoag Hospital where she will be for approx. 2 weeks and then she will go home, where arrangements have been made for her family to care for her and Tom
until she is fully recovered.
Lisa Dallman's mother-in-law passed away at the age of 94 from
natural causes.
Community Education By Fay Kerneen
Along with the Guild not being able to meet as a group in this unusual time, the events in which we would normally participate have been cancelled for 2020. The
Tustin Home & Garden Tour was postponed from early May to September, and that
date has now been cancelled. They plan to resume the show in May 2021.
And of course, there is no Orange County Fair this year (my personal favorite). The Fair Board is planning a virtual fair and has put out a request for short
videos. Not my area of expertise, but if anyone is interested in making a short
video promoting quilting, similar to what we do at the fair, please contact me.
Stay safe, everyone.

Philanthropy
By Julia Renaud
On Behalf of the Philanthropy Committee
I hope you are all staying in good health during this trying time. I’m sure I
can hear all your machines humming along making masks, Challenge
quilts, personal quilts and items for our philanthropy committee.
I’d like to share our report for donated items since our March Guild
meeting.
69 quilts – 64 baby quilts and 5 adult quilts.
47 bupees, 2 flannel blankets, 6 quilts donated to Stand Up For Kids,
41 pillowcases donated Hospice and 50 pillowcases to Vitas.
Right now the only agencies accepting donations are Vitas and Hospice for
pillowcases and Military Showers. We are still donating to the Military
Showers so please continue to make burpees, baby blankets and quilts.
In order for our committee to receive the items that members are sewing,
Stephanie Schneider, earlier this month, sent an email out asking if
anyone had completed items to contact her. She received quite a few calls
and the items were picked up. We will be continuing this process until we
have a guild meeting. If you have any items that you would like to donate
or if you would like kits for quilts, pillowcases and placemats please
contact Stephanie at her email: [email protected].
For the month of June we will not be having our sew day at Orange
Quilt Bee. Information regarding future sew days will forthcoming.
Please take care and hopefully we will back to together in July.
Thank you to Lisa and Pebble for the use of the
sewing room at The Orange Quilt Bee for our Philanthropy sew days.

Some of our beautiful, donated quilts

“Here is a small wall
hanging I recently
finished. It was a UFO I pulled out at the
beginning of this stay at
home period. I painted
the doves, pieced the
border and machine
quilted it.“
Eileen Wintemute
“This is a wrap I
crocheted. (Okay, I
know it’s not a quilt,
but it’s a similar
hobby.)”
So, what have you been up to?
“This is a top I fin-
ished. It’s now
ready for quilting. It is my husband
and his friend on
our favorite river.
It measures about
36”x40”.”
Nancy Mueller
“I have finished many quilt projects and pillowcas-
es for family during this Covid time. I didn't get
many pictures. However, I am proud of the bigger quilt that I finished.
This quilt measures 74" x 87" and took longer than
usual because it was hard to get fabric supplies!
It is made with Moda Crystal Lake. It is quilted by
me on my Bernina Q20.
I made it to enter the Fair....but there is no fair this year...so I decided to be brave and enter in the
Pieces of the Past quilt contest!
Presently I am working on trying new things, for
example, I am trying my hand at prairie points and
a scalloped border on a toddler quilt.”
“I made this "memory quilt"
in April. I've had the pattern
by Java House for years and always meant to make it.
When the pandemic hit, my
guest bathroom remodel had
just been finished and it
needed some art. I added the
wording so we would always remember the toilet paper
hoarding of 2020.”
Michelle Howe

“I Embroidered on a jean
jacket for my daughter.”
“Close up of jean jacket for
my daughter.”
“Tooth fairy pillows for my grandkids.”
“Baby quilt for grand
niece.”
>
“Baby quilt for grand
nephew.”
“I haven’t made any quilts (too distracted),
but I have been
gardening, baking, and
making masks. I thought
you’d like to see this special mask that I made
with hexagons and
pentagons. I was curious
if the roundness of a
soccer ball could
translate into a comfortable mask. Yes, it can! It’s a fair amount of
work because it was English paper pieced; I did it
just for fun, not to mass produce.”
Jan Johnson
“Floral jelly roll with
scalloped edges by Jan
Johnson, quilted &
enhanced by Jean Impey
(sewjean.com).”
“35 "happy masks" sent to Chicago County
Hospital for Docs & Nurses, with Ric-rac ties and
dart nose holder.”

“Penny Sturges’ Mochachino
Bag—
I purchased the pattern and
fabrics for this Mochachino Bag when Penny Sturges
was our guest speaker in
August 2016. One more
UFO done!”
Tamara Ambroson
“I recently finished this
quilt using French General fabrics by Moda.
I chose this project
because it represents two
“firsts” for me.
First time making a quilt
with appliqué.
First time using mainly
red and white.
I used a French General pattern, “Maison de
Garance”, for the house. The farmhouse critters I
got off the web. Because of their intricate shapes, I ended up doing raw edge appliqué using the
smallest stitch length on my machine. I do wonder
if they will fray when washed.
It was a fun project!”
Katie LeFlore
“I made these blocks with my Bee Hive Project Group
(12 quilters from around
the country), in January
and quilted it in April.”
Pam Hadfield
“’Whale Watching for
Mason.’ A quilt for my grandson.”
“This Label is from
my challenge quilt
that I have
finished.”
Pat Chambers
“10 year old UFO.. it pays to
clean my sewing cupboards!”
“Philanthropy project”

So, what have you been up to?
Cheryl Herbstman
“These first 3 are from
Australia. They are from
Tess Harper’s “Camelot”
pattern. All sewn by hand,
and I’ve used fabric dye to
paint on the 2nd & 3rd
patches.”
“I got Alex Anderson’s book called “Paper Piecing”
from the library. It was an ebook. I wanted to learn
how to do it. However when this pineapple block
came up I found I was having trouble drawing the
template, so I bought the book- as the pattern
could not print being it was an ebook. Anyway, I
made 3 of them to give as Mother’s Day cards.”
“The first block I did from Alex’s
“Paper Piecing” book for a friend’s
birthday.”
“My neighbor had a baby
girl, so I made the new
baby a rag quilt.”
Sharon Bozman
“These are a couple
of projects I have
been working on.
This was a mystery
quilt offered by
Edyta Sitar. I did
this with a group of
quilting friends in
Northern California,
as a virtual retreat.”
“This is a UFO that I
finished. It’s a
modern take on the
1930’s Farmer’s
Wife pattern.”

So, what have you been up to?
Joanna Florence
“Who doesn’t need another
Fourth of July quilt? I am finishing this flag quilt to
help celebrate the
holidays! The pattern is
by Edyta Sitar.”
Holly Batterman
“I’ve mostly been working
on the Moda Blockhead 3 challenge, when I’ve had
time to sew.”
