am pleased and honored to join you inSouthwest Florida and to lead Florida GulfCoast University as we launch our second
dynamic decade of service in higher education. As I begin my term as the third president ofFGCU, I am inspired by donors, supporters andfriends whose generosity has transformed anemerging state-supported institution into a rap-idly growing, high quality university of choice. My colleague, Dick Pegnetter, and I extend ourheartfelt thanks and appreciation to you for yoursustained support. We are encouraged that, withyour continued support, we will maintainFGCU’s meteoric rise to preeminence.
FGCU’s fund-raising history is impressive.Following the close of the highly successfulDedicated to Greatness capital campaign at $218million, the 2006-2007 fund-raising effort exceed-ed expectations and reported an income of $30million as the fiscal year ended on June 30. Your
generosity has resulted in the implementation ofnew programs, the tripling of endowed scholar-ship dollars and the acquisition of land, education-al facilities and other resources for environmentalresearch. The pages of the Annual Report detailyour support and present truly inspiring stories ofphilanthropy. We promise to continue ourthoughtful and effective stewardship of resourcesas we prepare students to serve their communitieswith vision, wisdom and integrity.

record number of students enrolled and theFoundation met its goal of raising more than$30 million in gifts that will benefit today’sstudents as well as those to come.
It’s been another year of growth, marked bygroundbreaking on Holmes Hall, LutgertHall and Sugden Hall. A second parkinggarage and a new complex of residence hallsare on the rise as well.
As in previous years, the community hasgenerously supported the University. Wedeeply appreciate your commitment to, andenthusiasm for, Florida Gulf CoastUniversity. It is because of your generositythat we are able to grow and flourish, adding
new buildings and programs that are criticalto our mission of creating a University thatwill continue to meet the needs of the bur-geoning Southwest Florida population.
As the University celebrates its first decade,we can look back with pride and amazementat the dramatic way in which the communityhas grown and how Florida Gulf CoastUniversity has kept pace, introducing addi-tional degree programs, expanding scholar-ship opportunities and growing our athleticsprograms, all in response to your input andsupport.
On behalf of the entire FGCU FoundationBoard of Directors, we thank you for the sup-port and loyalty you have shown thisUniversity. It is because of you that this is theUniversity of choice for Southwest Florida.

ydney Kitson and his develop-ment firm,Kitson & Partners, arecommitted to environmentally
conscious growth and are proving it byincluding Florida Gulf Coast Universityin their plans to build a new communityin southern Charlotte County.
The firm gave FGCU 67 acres in themidst of its Babcock Ranch property inCharlotte County, as well as $3 millionto build an environmental research cen-ter on the site. The University will applyfor $3 million in matching funds fromthe State of Florida for the facility.
Kitson & Partners is a West PalmBeach-based development firm that spe-cializes in environmentally sensitivemaster-planned communities. The com-pany plans to build just such a commu-nity at Babcock Ranch, a 143-square-mile property that straddles the Lee-Charlotte county line. The Kitson devel-opment will occupy 17,806 acres while
the state will preserve 74,000 acres.Mr. Kitson, the chairman and CEO,
also serves on FGCU’s FoundationBoard of Directors. His company’s giftto the University came from his beliefthat the two entities share the same envi-ronmental goals.
Although the firm has been involvedin environmental programs elsewhere, the gift to FGCU represents its mostsignificant such commitment to date.Mr. Kitson envisions the University’sCenter for Environmental Research andOutreach as a place where people of allages will have the opportunity to learn.
“It’s important to have students getinvolved with environmental issues at anearly age,”he said.“We think the FGCUCenter can play a vital role in their edu-cation. At Babcock Ranch we will have a74,000-acre ‘living laboratory’ locatedadjacent to the Center. With such closeproximity,we are enthusiastically looking
forward to working with the scientists tohelp us make a better, more environmen-tally sensitive community.”
University researchers will play majorroles in assessing how to preserve theenvironment.
“The research on wetland and uplandecosystems on the Babcock Ranch prop-erty is a logical extension of the workbeing done on the FGCU campus,” saidDr. Bonnie Yegidis, then-provost andvice president for Academic Affairs.“Thework will showcase the best practices ofland management. It will help create amore sustainable environment not just inour region, but throughout the world.”
Mr. Kitson shares this vision.“We want to do the right thing for the
environment and set the bar high fordevelopment standards for the entirestate,” he said. “We view our partnershipwith FGCU as an integral part of ourcommitment to the environment.”

he contributions of Edwin H.Bower are legendary, spanning40 years of service in Collier
County. Born in 1906 to humble farmparents in Michigan, he was theyoungest of five children and the onlyone to pursue and achieve a collegeeducation. As a newly minted CPA,after working for a large firm,he found-ed his own company in 1933 in Detroitin the depths of the Great Depression. This experience reinforced his basicvalues of thrift and a strong work ethic.
In 1965, his firm was purchased byArthur Young & Company, which laterbecame Ernst & Young. Freed frompast responsibilities, he moved toNaples, where he volunteered hisknowledge and expertise to many com-munity organizations.
In 1973, he was honored as Citizenof the Year. His belief that educationwas critical to society guided his gener-ous and quiet giving, which helped theyoung, the disabled and the elderly inneed. For his significant contributionsthat aided Collier County families andchildren he received the CosgroveAward in 1995.
After he moved to Moorings Park in1994,he perceived the need for a chapelthat would offer spiritual and musicalfood for the soul. His vision of thechapel as a beautiful architectural andmusical jewel was realized by hisdaughter and son-in-law, Marilyn andAlan Korest.
Because Mr. Bower loved his com-munity and wanted to improve thequality of life for so many,he became anearly supporter of FGCU. Joining himin his belief in the importance of educa-tion and in his deep appreciation formusic, the Korests chose to extend hislegacy to include the Bower School ofMusic at Florida Gulf CoastUniversity.
“We are very excited and pleased tohonor Marilyn’s late father, Edwin H.Bower, in perpetuity through the nam-ing of the Bower School of Music atFGCU,” Mr.Korest said.“This will notbe just another music school. BSM willbe one of pioneering leadership thatwill exert enormous influence in thiscommunity. The Bower School ofMusic will focus on providing its stu-dents with broad-based, creative andinnovative music education of academ-
ic and performing excellence.”The Korests provided the means by
which FGCU can indeed achievegreatness for the Bower School ofMusic. With the State of Florida MajorGifts Trust Fund dollar-for-dollarmatch, the value of the Korests’ giftbecame $5 million. Their endowedfund will support such activities as newfaculty positions, classroom instrumentsand equipment, scholarships, librarypurchases, marketing, music research, partnership endeavors, outreach pro-grams and public performance.
Of particular interest to the Korestsis that the Bower School of Music willsoon expand its degree offerings toinclude Music Therapy, a desired nicheof excellence for FGCU and one ofincreasing importance to SouthwestFlorida and beyond.

iven the limited amount ofdevelopment possible onFlorida Gulf Coast Universi-
ty’s main campus, securing nearby siteson which to establish much-neededprograms is critical to the institution’sgrowth.
That’s why the donation of propertyfor a research park on the site of TheFountains development is such a valu-able gift.
SouthStar Development PartnersInc. has generously offered theUniversity 20 acres – enough room tobuild a 200,000-square-foot center –within its community just east ofGateway and Southwest FloridaInternational Airport. The land is val-ued at approximately $3.6 million.
“The property is planned for use asa research park and, as such, continuesFlorida Gulf Coast University’s desireto be a leader in economic develop-ment within Southwest Florida,” saidDr. Joseph Shepard, vice president forAdministrative Services and Finance.“A university is more than just theoffering of classes in its academic core.It is an outreach and a part of the com-munity that is most tangibly seen viaresearch.”
Such a facility will likely attractpharmaceutical and biotechnologycompanies interested in teaming upwith the University, which would serveto stimulate the region’s economywhile providing valuable researchopportunities for FGCU faculty andstudents.
“The Fountains represents a devel-opment for the future by addressingmixed-use, sustainability and greendevelopment, all of which we believeare important to Lee County and itsfuture,” said Kimball D. Woodbury, executive vice president of SouthStarDevelopment Partners Inc. “An im-portant component of The Fountains, the research facility will help realize thegoals of the community and theUniversity. We are extremely excited tobe involved with Florida Gulf CoastUniversity in this new endeavor.”

he Conservancy of South-west Florida and FloridaGulf Coast University are
teaming up to establish an innovativeprogram aimed at guiding all mem-bers of the community to a higherenvironmental consciousness.
This joint program is being madepossible through a $1 million endow-ment donation to the Conservancy byEdith and Ed Andrew. FGCU withthe Conservancy, in turn, will providefunding to launch the “K-to-gray”Environmental Education andOutreach program.
The University will apply for astate match of $750,000 and ananonymous family foundation willprovide an additional $100,000 inseed money for the project.
It’s a program that ConservancyPresident and CEO AndrewMcElwaine believes is critically need-ed, citing a study that indicated envi-ronmental education in the area is“kind of scattershot.”
In addition to serving on theFGCU faculty, the director of theprogram will provide outreach servic-es and coordinate environmental edu-cation across the five-county region, according to Dr. Donna Price Henry, dean of the College of Arts andSciences.
“The College of Arts and Scienceshas had a longstanding informal rela-tionship with the Conservancy,” shesaid. “The joint faculty position willstrengthen that relationship”as well asprovide in-service teacher education, which will enhance environmentallearning in the schools.
Mr. McElwaine said, “Establishinga partnership with FGCU has been agoal of the Conservancy for manyyears. Environmental education is anessential part of our mission. Thanksto this generous endowment fromEdith and Ed Andrew, our goal hasbeen realized. By working withFGCU, we can both be more effec-tive.”

uliet C. Sproul’s roots in CollierCounty run deep. She’s the grand-
daughter of Barron Gift Collier whoonce owned the land that is now Collierand Hendry counties. Just as her grand-father helped found Collier County, sheis further nurturing the county’s growthand prosperity by serving her secondterm on the FGCU Foundation Boardof Directors. This year, she also gener-ously donated $1 million to theUniversity in support of an FGCU cen-ter in Collier County.
As a managing partner of the BarronCollier Companies, Ms. Sproul believes“the FGCU Naples Center is the latestsign of a new vitality coming to CollierCounty.”
Because of the higher educationcomponent and cultural activities that
will be offered there, she is confident thedowntown area will enjoy a new level ofsophistication. This element added tothe existing elegance and charm ofNaples will likely attract businesses andindividuals to Collier County.
“The reason I gave is that I believe
the Renaissance Academy (FGCU’slifelong learning program) has done agreat deal of good for Collier Countyand, in particular, for Naples,” Ms.Sproul said. “I believe in education and,no matter how old you get, you canalways learn something.”

he University is committed tobuilding a signature educational
facility at the gateway to Old Naples. The 50,000-square-foot building willoccupy a two-acre parcel the Universitypurchased on the corner of Goodlette-Frank Road and U.S.41 (Fifth Avenue).
With Collier County’s populationprojected to double in the next 25 years, the Naples Center will help meet theincreased demand for academic pro-grams for undergraduate and graduatestudents, continuing education for pro-
fessionals and lifelong learning oppor-tunities for adults.
The Naples Center will enable stu-dents from Collier County to fulfilleducational goals that will lead them todesired careers. The most desired aca-demic programs in Collier County arebusiness, health and education.Lifelong learning program participantswill enjoy the personal enrichment andsatisfaction that comes from the con-tinued acquisition of knowledge andcultural experiences. From symposia on
global, national and local issues, per-formances by FGCU’s Bower Schoolof Music, exhibitions, hands-on work-shops, lectures and courses, the activi-ties within these walls will be distin-guished by excellence in teaching, per-formance and service.

So he understands something aboutcommunities and growth.
“The FGCU Naples Center is veryimportant for Collier County,” he said.“The Renaissance Academy has been very
successful here and it has about run out ofspace at the temporary Naples location. The Naples Center will give theRenaissance Academy a permanent home. Also within this building will be a variety ofcritically needed classrooms for undergrad-uate study and MBA programs.”
As land around the University’s maincampus in Fort Myers builds out, Mr.Pezeshkan believes development andgrowth of education centers in such placesas Collier County, Charlotte County andCape Coral will be essential to FGCU’sability to accomplish its educational mis-sion for the betterment of the region.

onors who remember Florida GulfCoast University in their wills pro-
vide gifts that last well into the future. They create an enduring legacy for
their family name. An endowed fund rec-ognizes a family for its generosity andlasts forever in perpetuity.
Sometimes a gift comes out of the blueafter a donor has made a quiet, anony-mous contribution.
Other contributors prefer to announce
their gifts before they die so they have anopportunity to get more involved withthe University by attending events withfaculty, staff and students and get a first-hand look at the programs to which theyhave given their support. Estate gifts cango toward scholarships, academic or ath-letic programs or any other area of inter-est at FGCU.
Estate gifts can make huge differencesin the lives of students.
Through such gifts donors can estab-lish endowed chairs or expand the scopeof programs about which they care pas-sionately, making the students’ academicexperience that much richer.
Estate gifts to FGCU also provide ameans for families to take care of theirhealth and family members first, thenapply the remaining funds to programs orscholarships about which they feelstrongly.
Organizations like FGCU that changelives are generously supported with estategifts. FGCU is improving the lives ofmany students with the help of estategifts from generous donors. This moneymakes a real difference.

That gift will create the Hans andErna Marie Siebert Fund for Excellenceto support student scholarships. Withmatching money from the state, the fundwill exceed $300,000.
“The Sieberts’ legacy reflects theirgenuine love for students,” said SteveMagiera, FGCU vice president of

Naples resident Elisabeth Schmidt, along-time friend of the couple, said,“The Sieberts were good to the public. They made numerous charitable contri-butions to support the community.”
The couple grew up in Germany, moved to Montreal, then New York, and, finally, Naples. In 1989, they were instru-mental in founding the German-American Club Harmonie of Naples.

uth Faith was a woman ahead of hertime, a trailblazer whose influence on
future generations did not end when shedied last winter at age 77.
“She was an accomplished yet unas-suming woman, someone who didn’t bragabout her successes, but they were legion,”said Steve Magiera, FGCU vice presidentof Advancement.
Few knew that she was a pioneer inaerospace engineering, he said, workingfor Douglas Aircraft in the mid-1950sand as an aerodynamicist for ACFElectronics, participating in the design offlight simulators for aircraft.
Ms. Faith left behind the Ruth L. Faith
Endowed Scholarship for Women inMathematics.
“She will help out young women foryears to come,” Mr. Magiera said, addingthat she wanted to make sure women hadcareer opportunities in mathematics.“Shewas clearly swimming up stream in the1950s.”
Ms. Faith moved to Southwest Floridain 1971 and got involved with FGCUthrough a membership with the serviceorganization, ZONTA International.

eading is the primary buildingblock for learning. Research shows
that children who enter kindergartenwith solid reading skills are far morelikely to succeed in school and in life.
That’s why the Early Literacy andLearning Model (ELLM) is such a vital
program. Supported by the NaplesChildren and Education Foundation, founder of the tremendously successfulNaples Winter Wine Festival, ELLM’sgoal is to improve literacy skills amongat-risk pre-schoolers in 54 CollierCounty pre-kindergarten, Head Startand migrant classrooms.
According to Naples Children andEducation Foundation ExecutiveDirector Dawn Montecalvo, “Thetrustees of NCEF are proud of theELLM results over the past years. Thequality of the education of pre-schoolchildren in Collier County hasimproved tremendously since ELLMstarted working with these early learn-ing providers. More at-risk children are
starting school better prepared to learn.”ELLM is implemented and support-
ed locally by Florida Gulf CoastUniversity and focuses primarily on 4year olds in sites such as GuadalupeCenter, Redlands Christian MigrantAssociation, Immokalee ChildrenCenter and 35 Head Start classrooms.
The program provides support andengaging material for children in theclassroom, encourages family involve-ment in children’s reading at home andsupplies professional development sup-port for the teachers.
All of these strategies combine tohelp Southwest Florida’s youngest resi-dents develop a firm foundation for agood education and a bright future.

pology, using his scientific acumen tohelp medical examiners solve the riddlesof unexplained deaths.Among the morenotable historic investigations he con-ducted were of Czar Nicholas Rom-anov, Francisco Pizarro, Joseph Merrick(the Elephant Man) and PresidentZachary Taylor.
The University of Florida’s MaplesCenter for Forensic Medicine bears hisname and, a decade after his death, theresearch and work he did there contin-ues. Florida Gulf Coast University nowhas a tie to this renowned scientist andresearcher through a generous gift fromhis widow, Margaret Maples Gilliland, who donated a collection of non-humanprimate skulls and bones Maples col-lected.
His widow said that FGCU receivedthe gift in large part because of Maples’connection to Dr. Heather Walsh-Haney, assistant professor of forensicanthropology at the University. Dr.Maples mentored Dr. Walsh-Haneywhen she was a University of Floridastudent. Remembering him as a“superlative mentor,” Dr. Walsh-Haneyassisted him in identifying the 110 vic-tims of the 1996 ValuJet Flight 592crash in the Everglades.
Mrs. Gilliland was also moved to
donate the collection to FGCU becauseher late husband had a special connec-tion to Southwest Florida.
“The first place he was heavilyinvolved with a medical examiner was inLee County with (former county med-ical examiner) Wally Graves,” she said. The two couples became close friends.
Dr.Walsh-Haney said,“A new gener-ation of forensic anthropology studentswill be able to look at skeletal specimenshe collected in Africa. It is a superiorcollection and quite a feather in our cap.”

cholarships change lives. For so manystudents, the lack of finances is the
insurmountable obstacle to furthering theireducation. For other students, scholarshipsare public recognition of distinguished edu-cational journeys or the encouragement tocontinue on this path. They often connectrecipients to the region even after gradua-tion, building a well-educated workforcethat will serve and lead our region andbeyond.
In the academic year 2006-07, 680scholarships were awarded from more than200 established endowed funds that con-tinue in perpetuity. An endowment isestablished with a minimum gift of$10,000 made over a five-year period. Thefund is carefully invested and 5 percent ofthe earnings are awarded annually as schol-arships. The contributing individual orcompany names the scholarship fund anddetermines the criteria for student selec-tion. The State of Florida matches endow-
ment gifts of $100,000 or more. The matchranges from 50 percent to 100 percentbased on the size of the contribution.
In 2006, the state established anothermatching gift opportunity and the commu-nity responded to the challenge withenthusiastic generosity. In fact, more than$362,000 was awarded to qualified studentsin its first year. The First GenerationMatching Grant Program doubles everyscholarship gift made in support of FirstGeneration students. The entire gift andthe match are awarded directly to studentswho are degree-seeking undergraduatesfrom Florida with financial need and par-ents who have not earned baccalaureatedegrees.
The reasons scholarships are establishedare as varied as their selection criteria, but inall cases, the sponsors know their gifts aremaking differences, changing lives and cre-ating a better community and world.

here’s power in numbers. That’s why a group of friends pooled
their resources, donating $25,000 each tocreate a single fund totaling $150,000.Because the total amount exceeded$100,000, it became eligible for statematching funds, bringing the total of theendowed fund to $225,000.
That group included Joe and JoAnnCatti, Jack and Shelley Blais, Tom andLynda Case, David and Linda Lucas,Vito and Linda Manone and the lateFrank D’Alessandro.
“Everybody is fond of the Universityand so to be able to take advantage of thematch just made sense,” said Mr. Catti,
chair emeritus of the FGCU FoundationBoard of Directors and president andCEO of FineMark National Bank &Trust in Fort Myers.
Mr. Lucas serves on the FGCUBoard of Trustees while Mr.D’Alessandro was a member of theFoundation board.
Steve Magiera, FGCU vice presidentof Advancement said, “The FGCU
Foundation is very pleased that thisgroup of distinguished individuals is cre-ating a scholarship endowment to sup-port our students as they pursue theireducational goals. The fact that theendowment will be matched is a wel-come added benefit. The Blais, Case,Catti, D’Alessandro, Lucas and ManoneFamilies Scholarship will continue tobenefit our students in perpetuity.”
r.W.Bernard Lester has played an impor-tant role at Florida Gulf Coast Universityfrom the very start.
“When Alico, Inc. donated 760 acres for auniversity in Southwest Florida, Dr. Lesterwas there,” said Steve Magiera, FGCU vicepresident of Advancement.
When the agribusiness company donatedthree Eminent Scholar Chairs for theCollege of Business, Dr. Lester stood next tothen-chairman of the corporation Dr. BenHill Griffin III. He was the company’s pres-ident when it donated $5 million to establish
athletics at FGCU and build Alico Arena.“We enjoy watching things progress and
seeing the University grow,” he said. Now retired and living in Lakeland, he
and his wife, Elaine, still support FGCU.This year they established an endowedscholarship fund, the Elaine P. and W.Bernard Lester Scholarship Fund. The stateis matching their gift and 50 percent of theannual proceeds will be awarded as unre-stricted scholarships. The rest will be award-ed by the College of Business to studentswho need financial assistance for University-sanctioned travel.
Dr. Lester still takes a personal interest inFGCU. He has served on the UniversityBoard of Trustees since 2001 and theUniversity’s Lutgert College of BusinessAdvisory Council since 1998. He also was afounding member of the Athletics FirstFlight Club in 2001 and has served on theAthletics Executive Booster Board since2006.
The Lesters have cheered for FGCU ath-letes at hundreds of events, including all ofthe home basketball games.
“We have attended almost every sportthat there is,” he said. “We are big fans!”

“We’ve been in the hospitalitybusiness for 40 years and we can seean opportunity to impact the livesof these kids,” said Mrs. Carroll.“We want to enrich their lives withhospitality.”
The Carrolls want FGCU stu-dents to join ranks with the 70,000employees in the region’s resort andhospitality industry, she said.
The couple know that there arethings students cannot learn frombooks. That’s why they decided towalk them through the construc-tion of one of their hotels from the

with them right here in our ownback door,” she said. “We’ll supportthem in any way that we can.”
Mrs. Carroll sits on theUniversity’s Resort and HospitalityManagement Advisory Commit-tee, generating ideas for one of themost popular majors at theUniversity.

he University’s Athletics programmay be young, but it’s already garneredsome devoted fans.
In the past year, the Universityexceeded the annual fund goal of$500,000, raising an additional $1.2million for capital improvements.Thatmoney is particularly important thisyear with the higher cost of being aDivision I school and the addition ofthe women’s swimming and divingteam as well as men’s and women’s soc-cer.
Financial support is vital because thestate does not fund intercollegiate ath-letic programs at Florida universities.FGCU relies on two major sources offunding: a student athletic fee and pri-vate donations.
“Scott (Stevens) and I have taken aninterest in the Intercollegiate Athleticsprogram,” said Jeff Stevens of StevensIndustries. “Seeing a great complexappear in what was a ‘swamp,’watchingthe competitive fire in both the coach-es and the student-athletes, and being apart of the community support hasbeen energizing for us. With the moveto Division I and the caliber of compe-tition coming to Southwest Florida, weare proud to support FGCU Athletics.”
Fellow donor Mark Wiles feelsmuch the same way.
“Wayne Wiles Carpet has been anactive participant with the Universitysince its beginning,” he said. “We’veenjoyed supporting the UniversityFoundation and we take great pride insupporting the Athletic program. Iencourage all our area residents tocome out to the campus and to come
out to a ballgame – you won’t be disap-pointed!”
About 300 people have joined theBooster Club, which offers membersbenefits such as tickets to games, lunchwith the coaches and named scholar-ships.
The student athletes do their part byparticipating in various communityevents, including the Eagle MathProgram, which encourages some7,000 second graders to learn math, and the Big Brothers/Big SistersBowl-a-Thon.
The student-athletes help generateexcitement.
The women’s basketball teamranked number two in the nation lastyear, appearing on ESPN for thechampionship game. The men’s golfteam went to the national champi-onships as well. The men’s baseballteam beat Notre Dame.
“How many men’s teams in thefourth year of competition play NotreDame and win before a standing-room-only crowd?” said ButchPerchan, director for AthleticAdvancement.“The students have per-formed great on the playing fields andin the classroom. We’re awfully proudof these students.”

ou have to step forward. That’s why Tom Taylor,
president of the Naples engi-neering firm Holes Montes,Inc., chose to support theU.A. Whitaker School ofEngineering at FGCU.
“It was not a hard deci-sion,” he said. “We came tothe conclusion that if peoplelike us in the profession did-n’t support it in a significantway, then how could theUniversity ask others to stepforward?”
The firm made a signifi-cant contribution to name theHole Montes Lecture Hall inHolmes Hall, the engineeringfacility under construction atthe front of the FGCU cam-
pus.The University will applyfor matching funds for theHole Montes gift to be usedfor equipment in the newbuilding.
Hole Montes is a long-time contributor to theUniversity, having supportedmany of its initiatives overthe past 10 years. The engi-neering firm is also a largecontributor to engineeringscholarships, helping to bringsome of the best and thebrightest students to theUniversity when the engi-neering program began in2005.
Tom Taylor has been apart of the U.A. WhitakerSchool of Engineering’s advi-
sory council since the pro-gram began.
“It’s important for ourcommunity to establish aresource for young profes-sionals in the engineeringfield,” he said. “We preferhome grown if possible.”
Everyone benefits from astrong engineering program,Mr.Taylor said.
“None of us graduatedfrom FGCU because it didn’texist,” he said. “The Univer-sity is such a valuableresource for our communityand we felt compelled to pro-vide in a significant way. It’sa major step forward for anyuniversity and brings it to theforefront of the state andnation.”

“The Swansons have played a criticalrole in the development of Athletics at

The couple are happy to supportFGCU’s Athletics program.
“The Southwest Florida communityhas been a great place for me, both per-sonally and professionally,” said Mr.Swanson Sr. “Cookie and I believestrongly in giving back to this communi-ty. We both enjoy our relationship with
the FGCU Athletics Department, thecoaches and student-athletes, and we sawthe need to help the program as it wasbeginning.”
The Swansons believe sports benefitstudents on and off the field.
“We believe in the role that athleticscan play in both helping a young persongrow and in shaping the character of ayoung person,”Mr. Swanson said. “We’vealways supported programs that helpyoung people. Providing good facilitiesand scholarships to FGCU has been andcontinues to be important to us.”

he alumni of Florida Gulf CoastUniversity embody the aspirations andideals of their alma mater as they blazetrails for themselves in the workforceand the world.
Keeping them in touch with oneanother and with FGCU is theresponsibility of the AlumniAssociation.
Allison Allie, ’06 (MBA), serves asdirector of alumni relations and exec-utive director of the FGCU AlumniAssociation, working to create rela-tionships with the 7,000-plus alumniwho have graduated from FGCU overthe past decade.
The alumni, whose average age is33, contribute in many ways, includingspeaking at events, setting up intern-ships and getting personally involvedin projects.Because the University andthe Alumni Association are so young, individuals who desire to get personal-ly involved can make a big impact.
“We are starting to see the alumnisupport grow by individuals givingback to University initiatives likeLutgert Hall and the Resort andHospitality program,” said Dr. Jennifer
Sparrow, ’98 (MEd), 2005-07 AlumniAssociation board president “Alumniare working with the University andare major contributors to the vision forstrengthening and broadening theUniversity’s objectives.”
It’s easy for graduates to supportthe University and stay connectedbecause 85 percent live in Florida and70 percent are residents of the five-county region.
“They are staying here and it’sexciting,” Sparrow said.
Alumni can stay in touch throughPinnacle, the University magazine, aswell as Eagle Entourage, the newalumni online community and a bur-geoning membership program.
Eventually, Allie hopes to establishalumni chapters throughout the coun-try to reach out to all FGCU grads.
“They spent four years here anddeveloped a family,” she said. “TheAlumni Association continues to keepgraduates connected to professors, students and the community as awhole. We strive to create new mem-ories for the future and continue thatrelationship for the rest of their lives.”

The annual event began in 1991, as thefirst fund raiser for the as-yet-unnamedUniversity.
Held at Mediterra, Bonita Bay Group’smaster-planned community in NorthNaples, the 2006 tournament included 62foursomes who filled two courses. The15th annual event raised more than
