Late Krishibid M. A. Samad B.Sc. B.Ag (1943)

-Retired Director of Agriculture (Jute Production), Department of

Agricultural Extension, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of

Bangladesh.

-Ex-Chairman, Faruq Fertilizers Ltd., Dhaka

Commercial manufacturing and marketing of organic fertilizers in

Bangladesh is the idea of renowned agriculturist Krishibid M. A. Samad

well back in 1980s. Krishibid Samad, B.Sc. B.Ag (1943, The Bengal

Agricultural Institute, Dhaka, now Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,

Dhaka); a retired Director of Agriculture (Jute Production), Department of

Agricultural Extension (DAE); former advisor of the World Bank, Dhaka;

and former President, Krishibid Institution Bangladesh. He had established

Chitla Jute Seed Farm, Meherpur in 1950’s and Nashipur Jute Seed Farm,

Dinajpur in 1960’s under Jute Research Institute, Government of Pakistan.

These two farms are now under the control of Bangladesh Agricultural

Development Corporation (BADC).

With the declining soil fertility, Bangladesh will not be able to produce

enough food for her ever growing population in future. To avoid such

catastrophic event farmers of the country have to replenish organic

matter to their soil at the time of cultivation on regular basis. Homestead

composting prepared by farmers with no knowledge of analytical values

could not fulfill his seasonal needs. Kbd. Samad believed that there is a

need for commercially manufactured high quality multi-functional organic

fertilizer which is readily available to the farmers at peak season. The

fertilizer shall not only improve the soil fertility but also increase yield,

improve crop quality, reduce chemical fertilizer use and add values to the

produces that bring economic benefits to the farmers.

With that vision in mind, he manufactured his first commercial organic

compost in 1992 and named it as KOCH. The response of the market was

icy and not economically sustainable. Its’ use was only limited to the

nursery plants. When his second son Engr. M Omar Faruq, former

Contracts Engineer, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, Dubai, United

Arab Emirates returned home in 1997 after 20 years of successful

engineering service abroad took the initiative to enrich organic fertilizer

with macro and micro nutrients, gave a new brand name “ChookChook”

(which means “Uptake slowly”) and take to the field crops where it

needed most.

MOVING TO THE FUTURE A Sustainable

Agriculture in Bangladesh

Sustainability rests on the principle that

we must meet the needs of the present without

compromising the ability of future generations to

meet their own needs. In sustainable systems, the

soil is viewed as a fragile and living medium that

must be protected and nurtured to ensure its long-

term fertility and stability. With fast increasing

populations, shrinking cultivable lands, increasing

cropping intensity and so much talk on food security,

maintaining soil fertility is becoming one of the

greatest challenges in Bangladesh.

A good soil should have at least 2.5% organic matter,

but in Bangladesh most of the soils have less than

1.5%, and some soils have less than 1% organic

matter. It is believed that the declining productivity

of Bangladesh’s soils is the result of depletion of

organic matter due to global warming, use of

chemical fertilizers and no use of organic manures.

Thus, it is important to have organic matter in our

soil as it provides a vital link between food security

and sustainable agriculture.

The best means of improving organic matter content

in soil is alternative agricultural practices such as

crop rotation, recycling of crop residues, use of

cover crops, green manure, nitrogen fixing legumes,

animal manure and inoculums. But the practice is

critically dependent on effective implementation of

programs that require high level of farm

management skill and financial ability of the poor

farmers - in reality, both are absent.

The poor farmers of the country need readymade

and easy solutions for arresting nutrient mining and

depletion of organic matter in lieu of production of

costly and time consuming composting process.

ChookChook nutrient enriched organic fertilizer

provides that easy and affordable solution. Farmers

can get 20 kgs of organic matter and 16.5 kgs of

nutrients for every 100 kgs ChookChook applied.

ChookChook organic fertilizer improves soil fertility,

adds nutrients, increase microbial populations and

arrests nutrient erosion.

Besides, ChookChook is always available when

needed by the farmers at agri-input retailer’s shops

at hats & bazaars through a strong Supply Chain

network of Faruq Fertilizers Ltd. It is easy to

transport and less costly to stores during rainy

season or during floods.

ChookChook organic fertilizer works as a bridge

between the value added agricultural produces like

vegetables, corn, wheat, rice, pulses & oilseeds etc.,

and the value chain of town markets which is the

backbone of the Making Market Works for the Poor

(M4P) or Making Market Works for the Charland

Poor (M4C).

“ChookChook” brand nutrient enriched organic

fertilizer is a very popular organic fertilizer among

the poor farmers and is manufactured by Faruq

Fertilizers Ltd. (FFL) under license from the

Ministry of Agriculture, Government of

Bangladesh.

MAKING MARKETS

WORK FOR THE POOR (M4P) ChookChook NEO Fertilizer – an Input

For Value Added Crops

“I'm poor because I haven't found a way to

earn more money” - Krishna Bahadur Thapa from

Nepal replied to Paul Polak, founder of

International Development Enterprises (iDE). "What are we to do: the core farmers are now

selling the saplings?"- asked Khairul Islam to Dr.Urs

Heierli, Country Director (1987-99) of Swiss Agency

for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The

project (Village and Farm Forestry Program, VFFP,

1986) prescribes that saplings are to be given free

of charge to the poor farmers. Then, with a kind of

'coup d'oeil', speaking at virtually the same time,

they both said: "But what is wrong if farmers sell

the saplings? That means somebody is buying

them". In fact a business had been created at a

micro level.

Markets are at the heart of successful self-

sustained economic growth. Creating agri-business

opportunity for farmers like Krishna Bahadur Thapa

is required for maintaining a constant demand of

the produce that poor farmers cultivate. Linkage

with the Agricultural Value Chain (AVC) of the local

produces is a way forward for a sustainable agri-

business. But for the village produce travel through

the Value Chain up to the town market, farmers

need to (a) have value addition to their crops (b)

produce enough quantity to meet the demand and

(c) offer competitive pricing to stay in the business.

Most of the poor people in villages are small

farmers and it is crucial to increase their farm

productivity to cater the need of the value chain

demand after they are connected.

Increasing demand will put pressure on farm output

and farmers shall need to get out of the traditional

farming methodology and adopt new profit making

farming technology which requires replenishment

of organic matter and soil nutrients for value

addition and increasing crop yields.

ChookChook brand nutrient enriched organic (NEO)

fertilizers can help value addition and increase

yields of their produces. Both are income

generating tools for the farmers and are

prerequisite for entry to the agricultural value

chain.

Faruq Fertilizers Ltd., as a private sector

intervention, provides on-field and in-house

technical training to farmers, fertilizer dealers and

retailers for adopting sustainable agricultural

practice that will ensure constant demand of

ChookChook organic fertilizer in the emerging

market.

MAKING MARKETS WORK

FOR THE CHARLAND POOR (M4C) ChookChook Organic Fertilizer is

Excellent for use in Charlands

Charland area occurs along the major river

systems which have a complex topography.

Charland may emerge either as islands within the

river channel or as char attached to the riverbanks.

The active floodplain and charland soils occur in the

11 districts of Bangladesh i.e. Kurigram,

Lalmonirhat, Sirajgonj, Pabna, Jamalpur, Manikgonj,

Faridpur, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Chandpur and

Bhola. An estimated 6.5 million people about 5% of

the total population live on the Charlands which is

approximately 7,200 square kilometers or 5% of the

total area of Bangladesh.

The Charland has coarse textured soils, low water

holding and low nutrient capacity. There are a

number of soil health related problems in charland

which affect crop production. These problems are

depletion of organic matter, depletion of soil

fertility, nutrient deficiency, soil salinity, soil acidity,

moisture content and topsoil erosion. Soil organic

matter is a key factor in maintaining long-term soil

fertility since it is the reservoir of metabolic energy,

which drives soil biological processes involved in

nutrient availability.

In recent studies show that maize could be

cultivated in charland areas which has a high

market demand as poultry feed. But nutrient

uptake by maize is much higher compared to rice

and wheat, and consequently, high nutrient

depletion occurs in maize land.

If the poor farmers don’t get their expected yield

they will be at financial loss, their interest in

cultivation will diminish and they will sink deep into

poverty faster than can be imagined.

ChookChook nutrient enriched organic (NEO)

fertilizers can provide easy solution to the Charland

poor by replenishing organic matter, macro (N, P, K)

and micro nutrients (S, Zn, B, Mg, Mn) to various

crops like rice, maize, wheat, chili, ground nuts, pat

shaks, soybeans, sweet gourds, and sweet potato

etc. ChookChook provides 20 kgs organic matter

and 16.5 kgs nutrients for every 100 kgs applied.

Transportation of agricultural inputs is a major

limiting factor for the economic development of the

Charland poor. ChookChook fertilizers are easy for

transportation, simple to store and have no fear of

damage during rain or flood as it is sold in 2-kg

pouch compare to 40-kg sacks of other organic

fertilizers.

CHOOKCHOOK FOR

INCREASING

VEGETATIVE

GROWTH & YIELD OF

MEDICINAL PLANTS A Solution to

Commercial Cultivation of

Medicinal Plants

In Bangladesh

Knowledge of bioactivity of medicinal plants

existed in Indus Valley civilization (3300 BC), Ancient

Mesopotamia (3500 BC), Chinese yellow river

civilization (4000 BC) many thousands of years ago. It

was at the time of the Emperor Asoka's grandfather

Emperor Chandragupta, who was the founder of the

great Maurya dynasty (340-298 BC) that the first

European records of Indian medicinal plants appeared

which was used by the physicians and military

generals who accompanied Alexander the Great (356-

323 BC) on his campaigns against Indian continent.

Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC. However, the

international exchange of information on India’s plant

medicine predates Alexander as Indian coriander

seeds have been found in the tombs of the Egyptian

pharaohs. This means that Indian plants were being

traded to other countries at the time of India's ancient

Indus Valley civilization. Even today, people’s positive

attitude toward medicinal plants from prehistoric to

modern times is visible.

Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest systems of

medicine (1500 BC) in the world using medicinal

plants. It was flourished during the time of Buddha

(around 520 BC), and was the mainstream

medication techniques during the period of

Emperor Ashoka (304–232 BC). Two ancient books,

written in Sanskrit are considered the main texts on

Ayurvedic medicine—“Caraka Samhita (500-300

BC)” and “Sushruta Samhita (800 BC)”.

Ayurvedic treatments rely heavily on herbs and

their rich and well-defined herbal pharmacopoeias.

Historically, Ayurvedic medicine has grouped plant

compounds into categories according to their

effects. The compounds are described in texts

issued by National Medical Agencies in India.

Ayurvedic medicine is also practiced in Bangladesh,

Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan, and is being

produced with state-of-the-art high tech

machineries in Bangladesh in the forms of pills, oils,

and mixtures. According to the 2007 National

Health Interview Survey, more than 200,000 U.S.

adults had used Ayurvedic medicine in 2006.

Ayurvedic system of medicines is recognized by the

Government of Bangladesh and is a good

alternative medicine in both rural and urban areas.

Bangladesh possesses a rich flora of medicinal

plants. But the cultivation methodology remained

primitive and is not taken as a commercially viable

investment. The presence of big business

conglomerate like M/s. Acme, Square, Hakkani,

Hamdard in the Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing

in Bangladesh, demand for raw materials of

medicinal plants are increasing exponentially.

However, Ayurvedic medicine manufacturers are

importing 60-70% of plant materials from foreign

countries due to non-availability of enough

quantities of good quality within the country. It is

mainly due to declining soil fertility and improper or

usage of chemical fertilizer causes low vegetative

growth and yield of medicinal plants.

A sustainable approach to modernize nutrient

management of medicinal plants can only meet the

growing demand. ChookChook nutrient enriched

organic fertilizers when used helps increase in

vegetative growth, yield, chemical constituents,

fresh/dry weight and quality of medicinal plants.

Medicinal plants need organic treatment for

prevention of fungal diseases. Bordeaux mixture, a

French organic technology (1885 AD) to fight

fungicide can arrest loss of valuable medicinal

plants. Faruq Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures a

popular “Arjun” brand Bordeaux mixture for the

benefit of medicinal plant cultivators.

MAKING NUTRIENT ENRICHED

PHYTOPLANKTON & ZOOPLANKTON ChookChook-160 Fertilizer

An Organic Input for Vegetarian Diet of Fish

Phytoplankton is microscopic plants

that live near the water surface and create

carbohydrates through the process of

photosynthesis. Phytoplankton grows very quickly,

only living for a day or so and is eaten by bacteria or

zooplankton. When they die, they settle on the

pond floor and make the floor soil fertile and

nutritious food for floor crawling fish.

Phytoplankton needs two basic ingredients to

thrive: sunlight and nutrients. Being in tropical zone

Bangladesh enjoys warm and long sunny days

which help photosynthesis but at the same time

phytoplankton growth is limited by nutrients

deficiency in the pond water. When a plant needs

to grow, it uses solar energy to convert nutrients

like silicon and phosphorous into organic tissue.

When there is a lack of sufficient quantities of

nutrients in the water, phytoplankton cannot

complete conversion process that results in

retarded plankton population and fish remains

malnourished.

Besides they need a wide variety of chemical

elements i.e. nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) are

critical and are like fertilizers that we add to crops.

These elements are used to make proteins, nucleic

acids and other cell parts of the phytoplankton that

are essential for survival and reproduction. They

also require silicon, iron, copper, zinc and cobalt for

maintaining a healthy and strong growth.

Zooplanktons are microscopic animals that live in

deeper water and eat phytoplankton. As such their

bloom is tied to phytoplankton population density

in a pond. It is a vital component of sea and

freshwater food webs. The smallest zooplanktons

are eaten by the larger zooplanktons which, in turn,

are eaten by fish, aquatic insects and so on.

Zooplankton leisurely swims in the water and

obtain their energy from consuming organic

compounds, such as phytoplankton or other

smaller zooplanktons. Malnourished phytoplankton

can’t make zooplankton strong, energetic and

healthy.

Zooplankton are the initial prey item for almost all

fish larvae as they switch from their yolk sacs to

external feeding. Fish rely on the density and

distribution of zooplankton in the pond to match

that of new larvae which will otherwise starve to

premature death.

ChookChook-160 nutrient enriched organic (NEO)

fertilizer can provide easy solution to the fish

farmers by replenishing nitrogen (N), phosphorus

(P), Potassium (P), Zinc (Zn) and other trace

elements like silicone (Si), copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and

cobalt (Co) in the ponds. This increased nutrient

availability in the water accelerates exponential

growth of highly nutritious phytoplankton and

zooplankton populations that are essential source

of nutritious food web of the fish in a pond.

When both nutritious phytoplankton and

zooplankton are in the diet of pond fish in

abundance, it becomes healthy, stout, lively, shiny,

testy, and attains commercial size within a period

shorter than usual time making it profitable

business venture for villagers.

FFL ensures availability of ChookChook-160 nutrient

enriched organic fertilizer at village hats & bazaars

through its’ strong supply chain network.

14 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN VALUE

ADDITION TO CROPS ChookChook Nutrient Enriched

Organic Fertilizers

Value addition to an agricultural produce has a

particular importance as it offers a strategy for

transforming one set of characteristics to other

characteristics that are more preferred in the town

markets which makes the effort demanding and

profitable. Farmers of Bangladesh especially those

who are living in Charlands and pro poor areas are

selling their agricultural produces “as is cultivated”

at the nearest small hats. The income is not enough

to maintain their livelihood and reinvest in

cultivation in the next cropping season. Therefore, a

profitable value-added strategy is critical to the

long-term and sustainable economic development of

most farmers in Bangladesh.

The problem lies with the lack of knowledge of

choosing appropriate crops for cultivation that has

demand in town markets, absence of technical

know-how of the best management practices of

plant nutrients, non-availability of quality

agricultural inputs like high yield variety (HYV) or

hybrid seeds, and appropriate fertilizers and

pesticides.

A strong and solvent agri-inputs supply chain can

provide quality seeds, fertilizers and pesticides for

value addition to the crops. A vibrant agricultural

value chain can bring dynamic wholesale purchasers

to village markets from town markets. Informative

training programs of market dynamics and linkages

to town markets shall make the Charland and pro-

poor farmers financially solvent.

Plants need continuous supply of proper food for

the development of their reproductive system and

to remain strong and healthy for producing new

generations. Nobody can expect higher yields,

quality fruits and edible leaves from plants by

keeping them hungry and malnourished.

ChookChook nutrient enriched organic fertilizer

guarantees availability of plant nutrients N, P, K, S,

Ca, Zn, Mg, B, Mn, Mo, Si, Co etc. in addition to

organic matter, oilcake, bone meal and large

brigades of helpful microbes.

Various research institutes under Bangladesh

National Agricultural Research System (NARS) had

carried out field trials of ChookChook organic

fertilizers in both on-station research farms and

farmers’ fields on rice, potato, tomato, okra,

turmeric, banana, tobacco, groundnuts etc. showed

that application of “ChookChook” brand crop-

specific nutrient enriched organic fertilizers can

effectively reduce 10% use of nitrogenous fertilizers

and 25% other chemical fertilizers like phosphorous,

potassium etc. without sacrificing higher yield of

crops.

Besides ChookChook fertilizer increases fertilizer Use

Efficiency and gives at least 25% value addition to

crops, fruits and forest trees that financially benefits

to a large number of farmers.

A VIBRANT SUPPLY CHAIN OF

FARUQ FERTILIZERS LTD. ChookChook Packaging is

Water Proof

Thousands of poor farmers in rural and

charland areas do not have access to affordable

agricultural inputs such as high quality seeds,

fertilizers and pesticides to raise their farm

productivity even though number of hats and

bazaars has been increased in the recent past. But

in the absence of reputed agri-inputs

manufacturers and importers, the quality of agri-

inputs available at the remote hats & bazaars is

deplorable and many times harmful to the crops. As

a result conscious farmers have to travel a great

distance in search of quality and reliable agri-inputs

and the travel expenses unnecessarily added to

their cultivation cost. Therefore, development of

qualified rural agri-inputs retailer’s network is

critical for accelerating the access of the rural poor.

Faruq Fertilizers Ltd. (FFL) has taken initiative to

serve the charland poor farmers with the popular

“ChookChook” brand nutrient enriched organic

fertilizers for adding value to the crops that will

have visible incremental financial gains (VIFG) to

the poor farmers.

ChookChook organic fertilizer is packaged in smaller

size 2-kg pouch to improve affordability of farmers

and for easy transportation by boats through

khals/rivers and by bicycle through narrow mud

roads.

ChookChook packaging is water proof to prevent

damages during rainy season, heavy rain or flood. It

remains intact even if submerged in flood water.

FFL always invest to make the supply chain vibrant

and ensure quality organic fertilizers that in turn

increases demand of ChookChook fertilizer.

Technical training is constantly provided to all

actors of the supply chain like farmers, fertilizer

retailers and dealers for maintaining steady and

sustainable demand growth of ChookChook

fertilizer.

FFL creates awareness among the farmers by doing

farmer (men & women) meetings at hats & bazaars,

distributing leaflets, hanging festoons and banners.

FFL regularly provide trainers’ trainings (TOT) to

Sub-Assistant Agricultural Officers of Department of

Agricultural Extension (DAE) in order to make the

ChookChook supply chain more functional and

farmer’ friendly.

The existence of innovative and vibrant value and

supply chain is the real engine for a successful M4P

or M4C approach. Value addition to crops at village

level is the core strength of all such activities.

ChookChook is the organic fertilizer that makes it

happen.
