  • Before embarking on your latest advmture, you mustfust discover your onm strengths and weaknesses. You use drce to detrmin your inrtial scores. Onpages 2o-2r there rs an Aduentute Sheef whi'ch youmay use to record the details of your adventure. On iLyou will ffnd boxes for recording the scores of yourattributes You are advised either to record your scoreson lhe Adoenture Sheet in pencil or to make photocopiesof the sheet for use in future adventures.

Skill, Stirmina and LuckRoll one dice. Add 6 to lhe number rolled, then enterthis toLal in th sKrLLbox on lhe Adoenture Sheet.Roll two dic- Add rz to the number rolled, then enLerthis total in the sr^MNAboxRoll one dice. Add 6 to the nlrmber rolled, then enter[his total in the LUCK box.For reasons that will be explained below, yorrr scoreswill change constantly during the adventure. Youmust keep an accurate record of these scores, and forlhis reason you are advised to wrile small in the boxesor !o keep an eraser handy. But never rub out yourInitiql scores AJthough you may be awarded additionalsKr!!, srAMrNA and Lucx points, thefu totals maynever exceed their lflifi;"/ scores, except on those veryrare occasions when the text specifically lells you soYour srrlr reflects your expe*ise in combat, yourdexterity and agility. Your STAMINA scote is a measure of how healthy and physically fit you are- Your

LUcr score indicates how lucky you are. In all thesecases, the higher the score, the betteC

BattlesDuring yow advmture you will often encounter hostrlecreatues which will attack you, and you yourself maychoose to draw your weapon against an enemy youchance across. In some situations you may be givenspecial options allowing you to deal with the encounterin an unusual marmer, but in most cases you will haveto resolve battles as described below.Enter your opponent's sKrLL and srAMrNA scores inthe first ernpty Encounter Box on your AdoenlureSreel You shodd also make a note of any specialabilities or inshuctions that are unique to that paftic1llaropponent. Then follow this sequence:r Roll both dice for your opponent, Add its sKrLL

score to the total rolled, to find its Attack Strength.z. Roll both dice for yor:rself, then add your cr.nrent

sxrr-r, score to find your Attack Strngth.

3- If your Aitack Strngth is higher than your oppo-nent's, you have wounded iL: proceed to step 4. Ifyour opponent's Attack Skength is higher thanyous, it has wounded you proced to step 5. lfboth Atback Shength totals are the sarne, you naveavoided or parried each other's blows: start a newAttacl Ror:nd from step r, above.

4- You lEve wounded your opponent, so subkact 2

  • points from iLs srAMtNA score. You may use LucKhere to do additional damage (see below). Proceedto step 6

    5. Your opponent has wounded you, so subtract zpoints from your sTAMINA score. You may useLUcx to reduce the loss of srAMlNA (see below).

    6. Begin lhe next AtLack Round, starting again at sL?1 This sequence continus until the STAMINA scoreof either you or your opponent reaches zero, whichmeans death. If your opponent dies, you are free Locontinue with your adventure. If you die, youradventure ends and you must begin all over againby creating a new character.

Fighting More Than One OpponentIn some situations you may ffnd you'self facing morethan one person or creature in combat- SomeLimes youwill heat them as a single opponent, aL olher timesyou will be able to fight each in tum, and then again,at other times you will have to fight them all at thesame timel I[ they are treated as a single opponenl, thecombat $ resolved normally. When you are nstructedto 6ght your opponents one at a time, Lhe combat isagain resolved normally - except that, once you defeatan enemy, the next steps forward to ffght you! Whenyou find yourself under attack from more than oneopponent at the same time, each adversary will make aseparale atta& on you in the course of each AttackRound, but you can choose which one to fight Attackyour chosen larget as in a normal baLtle. Against any

additional opponents you lhrow for AtLack Strengthsin Lhe usual way. If your Attack Shength is greaterihan your opponent's, in this instance you will noLinflict any damage; yor: can regard it as having parriedan incoming blow lf your Attack Strengt+r is lowerthan your adversary's, however, you will be woundedin the usual way. Of course, you will have to settlethe outcome againsb eadr additional adversary sepa-rately.

LuckAi various times during your adventure, either inbattle or when you find yourself in another situahonin which you could be eiiher Lucky or Unlucky (detaiJsof lhese are given in the relevant paragraphs), youmay use rucr to make the outcome more favourableto you. But beware! Using LUc( is a risky businessand, if you are Unlucky, fhe results could be disas-trous-

The procedure for Tesling yaw Laclc works as follows:roll two dice If the number rolled is less than orequal to your current LUc( score, you will havebeen Lucky and the ouLcome will go in your favour. If the number rolled js higher than your cunenf LUCKscore, you will have been Unlucky and will be penal-ized.Each time you Test youl Luck, you must subtracf 1point hom your current LUCK score Thus you willsoon realize that, the more you rely on your LUCK, lhemore risky this procedure becomes.

    11

  • L)sihg Luck in BdtflesFrom time to time you will be told to Test yow Luck, and you will thm leam the consequences of beingLucky or Unlucky. However, in batlles you alwayshave the ophon of using your LucK eilher to inflictmore serious damage on an opponent you have justwounded or to minimize the effects of a wound youhav just received.II you have just wounded an opponent, you r ay Testyour Luck, as described above. If you are Lucky, youhave inflicted a svere wound, deduct 2 extra pointsfrom yow opponmfs sraMrNA score. If you areUnlucky, however, your blow only sdatcies youropponent, you may deducl only r point from youropponent's srAMrN^ (so that, instead of inflicting theusual : points of damage you now ffict only r).Whmever you yourself are wounded in combat youmay Test vour Luck to try to minimize the wound. lfyou are Lucky, your opponent's blow only grazes you, deduct just 1 point from your own sraMtNA. II youare Unlu&y, youl wound is a se.iour one and youmust deduct 1 ,rtr4 srAMrNA point (i.e. deduct a tolalof 3 points from your srAMrNA).Remember: you must subtract 1 point ftom your LUCKscorc each Eme you Test yow Lu.k.

    More About Your Attributesskitl

Your SKILL score will not change much during thecourse of your advenhue. Occasionally a paragraphmay give instructions to increase or deqease yoursKrLL score, but it may not exceed its lnitial vaJueunless you are specifically instructed to the contrary. At various times during your adventure, you will betold to Test vout Skil!. The procedure for doing this isexactly the same as for Testing your lt,t./c. Roll twodice. If the number rolled is less than or equal to yourcrment SKILL score, you have succeeded in your Lestand the result will go in your favour. If Lhe numberrolled is higher than your cunent EKILL score, youhave falled the test and will have to suffer the conse-quences. However, unlike lcifirg your Luck, yan donot have to subtract l point from your srrrr eachtnte you Test your Skill.

SlafiinaYour srAMrNA score will change a lot during yowadventure, IL will drop as a result of wounds gainedthrough combat or by falling foul of traps and pitfalls, and it wlll also drop after you perform any particularlyarduous task [f your srevru score ever falls Lo zero, you have been killed and should stop reading the bookimmedia tely, Brave adventurers who wish to pursue theirqueslmust rollup a new characterand sfart allover again. You can restore lost sr^MrNA by eating meals orProvisions. You start the game without any Provisions,

    I

  • but durJng your advenLure you will be able to obtainmeals You must keep kack on yoor Adoenture Sheet olhow many meals' worth of Provisions you have left. Each fime you eaL a meal, you may restore up to 4Pornts of srAMrNA, but at fhe same time you muslremember to deducl r meal from your stock o{ Provi-sions- You may pause [o eat Provlsions at any Lrmqexcept when you are engaged in a baLtle.

LuckAddrtions to your LUCK score may be awarded in theadventure when you have been particularly lucky orhave created your own luck by some action Detailsare given, wherc appropriate, rn the relevanL part ofthe book. Remember that, as with sKrLL and srAMrNA,your LUcK score may never exceed its ,?ilial value

Every Templar knows about that feribLe period inRuddlestone's history. One hundred years ago, thekrng and head of your order at that time, Chivalras IX,had a brother, Belgaroth, who was also one of theKnights of Telak But Belgaroth was consumed withlealousy for his brother and desired to be king himselfAlthough Chivalras was in kuth a wortny monarcn,Belgaroth considered him a weak lcng and thoughfihat Ruddlestone should be ruled with an iron fist. Asthe years passed, Belgaroth spent more and more timeaway from the Citadel at his own castle on the edge ofthe Banarask Hills. During that time, he became cor-rupted by his own hatred and lealousy, so that eventu-ally he rejected Telak and tumed to worshipprng theDark Cods of Chaos, that they might grant him thepower to destroy Chivalras.
