Woman hit bybakkie fightingfor life

A 21shyYEARshyOLD woman is fighting for her life aftershe was hit by a bakkie on the Umgababa bridge overthe N2 on Sunday 4 May at around 930am

Reports from the scene indicate that two vehiclescollided the bakkie then veered off the road hittingthe woman who was sitting on the grass verge Shewas thrown through the air for about 50 metres andthe bakkie went over her before coming to rest severshyal metres away

Netcare 911 and paramedics found the injuredfemale lying unresponsive in the long grass next tothe road

Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise her Shewas placed on a ventilator and immobilised on atrauma board before being airlifted to King EdwardHospital mdash Supplied

The bakkie travelling on the N2 north collidedwith one of the cows killing it and causing severedamage to the vehicle

According to Netcare 911rsquos Chris Botha para-medics and the fire department found that the cowhad been killed on impact and was lying in the fastlaneThevehicleoccupants escapeduninjuredThetraffic department had to close the highway whilethe remaining cattle were herded off the N2

SPCA manager Tracey Girling said that the cowwasdeadwhen their inspector arrived at the scene

ldquoThe cows were apparently unattended and noherdsman was foundrdquo Girling said

Thenextdayinanotheraccidentfourcarscollid-edwiththreecowsontheN2northneartheUmgaba-ba off-ramp at around 730pm The cows were ap-parentlywalkingon thehighway spacedoverabout200 metres

Oneofthecowswaspregnantandgavebirthaftershewashit by oneof the cars but the calf died at thescene

One of the cars had overturned and rolled downtheroadandthewreckagecametorestonitswheelsThe occupants of the vehicles escaped uninjuredhowever the roadwas obstructedwhile emergencyservicesassistedwith theremovalof thedeadcattle

ldquoAny loss of life is tragic whether it be a humanor an animal Something has to be done about theunattended cattle roaming the streets and high-ways Accidents like these will keep happening un-less the municipality starts enforcing its by-lawsUnfortunately theSPCAdoesnothavetheresourcesto manage or control the situationrdquo Girling said
