When I hear the music o Brad Mehldau I dont hear

Jazz, I hear Brad Mehldau; a voice, a melody and a

sound. O course I hear lots o voices that blend into

his particular resonance; J. S. Bach, Bill Evans, Keith

Jarrett, Brahms. His two recent releases, Highway

Rider o March 2010 and the brand new Live In

Marciac only re-arm and enhance the opinion

Ive had when I rst laid ears on his Introducing

Brad Mehldau CD o 1995. It is all so amiliar yet

dierent. I have devoured and lived by every one o

his nearly 20 releases ever since. Each one oering

quintessential beauty o sound in a modern sea o

cacophony; a tone innovator via innovation o nuance

    rather than blasting or aggression.

These latest two present a marvelous contrast and

serve to undisputedly re-enorce the astounding

depth and width o Mehldaus artistry. Highway

Rider is a 2 CD opus magnus studio recording

o compositions eaturing piano trio, a chamber

orchestra and everything in-between; swinging jazztrio action wanders into classical sounding orchestral

zones which drit back to solo piano soliloquies

snappy and slow, silky and edgy, all in two sixty

minute episodes. This months new Live In Marciac

presents again a two CD set (plus a bonus DVD).

This is Mehldau center stage, all alone but creating

orchestra and kaleidoscope o colors, moods, tones

rhythms, and dynamics with just his imagination, 2

hands and a piano; pounding intensity, multi-rhythm

chords ala Bach or McCoy Tyner give way to tender

heart achingly crystalline quiet beauty. He travels

swingingly rom two sted muscular to romantic

introspection and back all sprawled out in 2 60

    minute live concert cds.

Brad Mehldau pianist, composer, band leader blurri

the lines between jazz and classical in way that no

one has achieved so ar and likely wont come near

    or many many years.

I took my rst art class my sophomore year in high school.

All o my art training has come rom public school system.

In one year I ell in love with art, as I was continually

challenged to use something I had not oten used beore,

creativity. The next year I could not resist moving on to

the next level o art. Art 2 proved to be more challenging,

as creativity was encouraged even more in the projects

we would do. It was in this class that I painted my

George Washington painting, oten reerred to as Good

Ole George. I was pushed to a level o creativity that

was oten rustrating and tiresome, which in turn made

Good Ole George a very time-consuming project. I am

currently in AP 2-D design, which is a college level art

class. In total, I need 24 pieces or my AP portolio, 12

ront pieces and 12 concentration pieces. The ront 12

pieces are random, demonstrating diversity in medias,

while the concentration is 12 pieces on a certain subject

o your choice. Art has opened up a whole new world to

me, where it takes me in lie I dont quite know yet, but I

know that art has helped me develop my talents in many

    other aspects o my lie.

We have a diverse approach with

our main purpose to educate and

    enlighten the students o J. L. Mann

in the Visual Arts. Problem solving

and higher order thinking skills are

    evident in all classes.

Theres a story o an unknown author, in which a businessman on vacation meets a local in a pristine, beachy-type location.

The businessman asks the local what he does all day. The local replies, I sleep in, play with my kids, spend time with my

wie, fsh, and enjoy time with amily and riends over good dinner and wine.

The businessman is amused. He, o course, is an investor, well-educated, with a frm that is booming and more money

than he knows what to do with. He quickly begans to teach the local about growing businessyou should get a bigger

boat, and then youll be able to bring in a bigger haul. Then you can sell it and make more money. Soon youd be able to

grow into a larger company, and have a monopoly on the fsh industry in this region. You would have more money than

    you know what to with.

The local thinks or a minute, then says, And then what?

Well, the businessman replies, without skipping a beat, then you can grow the business or 15 years or so, and then youll

    be wealthy when you retire.

Yes, says the local, but then what?

Well, then, you wouldnt have to worry about anything. You could retire and simply live on the beach His speakingslowed as he grasped the reality that this man already lived the lie he wanted to achieve, a reality that the businessman

himsel had devoted 60 hours a week, as well as much stress and heartache.

I love this story, because it says so much in so little. It makes you think about so much in just a ew sentences. I dont know

who wrote it (every source I fnd says Anonymous) but its a true mirror as to what we do to ourselves every day.

An acquaintance and I were talking one day about retiring and I asked her what she wanted

to do when she broke ree o all the work and responsibility that we had been discussing

and retired. She said, I want to scuba dive all over the Caribbean. Oh, so you like

to scuba? I asked. No, actually, she had never done it. Never even snorkeled, never

took the frst lesson, but that was what she wanted. I couldnt help but imagine her

retiring and then realizing that she still didnt know how to do what she had wanted

    her whole lie to do.

How many o us have it all backwards?

Heres the best remedy Ive ound live lie by living. Want to spend more

time with your amily? Take a day or two o and do it. Want to learn

a new career that makes you happy? Sign up or a class and do it.

Want a new car? Hit the Motormile. (Okay, maybe that last

one doesnt quite ft, but you get what Im saying, right?)

I you want something, dont just sit there and want it.

Even the businessman thought he was progressing

toward the dream with all the hard work and pride

he took in every hour he put in.

Sure, in this society, work equals survival, but

theres so much more that we miss i we

have The Ideal as just the goal, and not part

    o the journey.

I noticed the car rst. More precisely, the Mercedes emblem on the ront o the car. Three simple lines

inside a perect circle. It was surrounded by a spectacular eld o red. A red that doesnt appear anywhere

in nature and is probably patented with a name like Mercedes Red. It was a convertible (what else?) andsince the weather was ne, the top was down. As my eyes danced rom the hood, over the windshield

    I saw her.

Ive always been partial to strawberry blonds. She had her hair pulled back but I could see a ew rebellious

curls reeing themselves rom their scrunchie bondage. She wore big, dark sunglasses, la Audrey

Hepburn. What was she hiding? She had a pretty smile. Not gorgeous. Pretty. Was she smiling at me?

Or just squinting in the sunlight? She wore a white oxord shirt, rolled up to her elbow with the top two

buttons undone. My brain fooded with a million questions.

What color are her eyes? Can she see me? Wheres she going? Where is she rom? Is that her car? Is she

married? Is she happy? Automatic or standard? Does she know how good she looks? What kind o books

does she read? What kind o movies does she watch? Does she get scared in a thunderstorm? Does she

get mad when people assume things about her? How does it eel to hold her? Could I love her? Could

    she love me?

Trac being what it is, I was soon going my way and she was going hers. I cant even say we had a real

connection. (Those damn glasses.) Deep in my heart, I hope I never see her again. Reality only complicates

things. Besides, what i she was just squinting and she chose never to grace me with her pretty smile? No.

I choose to believe that her smile was or me. And or that split second that our eyes met, we were in love.

Either way, to the strawberry blond in that red Mercedes: thank you.

    The madness began when

    both o my sweet sisters-

    in-law, Stephanie & Mollie

tried to talk me into joining

    Facebook back in 2007.

You see, back then, Facebook was just a college thing...

and even though I pretend like Im still in college, I wasnt

going to get on as one o those moms. Then, in June

o 2008, I was talking to a dear riend, Mark Kramer and

he said Kathryn, you HAVE to get on Facebook. YOU, o

all people, need to be on Facebook! The rest is history.

I COMPLETELY blame this addiction on Kramer. Myhusband thanks you.

I like to consider Facebook my virtual bar. Nothing makes

me happier than to be in my pajamas, drinking wine, on

my soa & talking to so many o my riends. The best thing

is the DELETE button - I use it oten. I wish I had that

DELETE button or real lie interactions. It would make my

lie so much easier. Even though it sounds ridiculous, there

are some abulous relationships that have evolved through

me being a social media junkie.

Normally, I treat Facebook as my personal social club.

Membership has its privileges. Everything is private and

only i youre my riend can you see anything - pictures,

inormation, my status updates...anything. On Facebook,

people sometimes get a bit serious telling their every

move step by step. My goal on Facebook is just to make

people laugh and connect with my riends. Period. I I

succeed in making someone laugh, my job is done. Trust

me,I ail many times TRYING to make people laugh.

Twitter is a bit dierent. Twitter is my way to connect and

engage with prospective riends on personal & proessional

levels. I have made some antastic connections! LinkedIn

is my proessional bridge to connect or possible

    networking opportunities in the uture.

Between these three levels o networking sites, Im

always connecting with dierent outlets and constantly

building my contact list. I love meeting people, connecting

with them and somehow creating some sort o common

ground. Being on common ground with everyone I know

is how I have luckily made so many genuine riendshipsover the years. Well, that and acting a ool. Either way,

the riendships that have been ormed are lielong &

memorable treasured riendships. That to me, is pretty

incredible and crucial. You can never have enough great

riends. Being thirtyish (humor me)..and a girl, it has

become increasingly more dicult to nd true dear

girlriends. It seems like girl riendships mainly stem

rom school age years, college years and wives o

    spouses riends.

I never expected to make some o the best riendships I

have ever had by meeting them virtually on these

networks. NEVER. In the past three years, my world has

been rocked by some incredibly wonderul people that I am

ortunate to now call my dearest o riends that I would love

to tell you about, but youre going to have to check out my

Stacy Hammac Im A happy Girl!By Stacy Hammac

The best part about March in downtown Greenville is watching everything comeback to lie. The weather gets nicer, the fowers start blooming, people come out to stroll the streets, baseballs

back, and the sounds o music are everywhere. Even on the streets o downtown. Thats right, olks, Downtown

Alive and Main Street Fridays are back! And this girl couldnt be happier.

Thursday, March 17, marks the beginning o Greenvilles annual spring/summer outdoor music series. Between

mid-March and September, you can check out live music at Hyatt Plaza on Main Street every Thursday and

Friday night. Thursdays are the Piedmont Natural Gas Downtown Alive series, and Fridays are the BB&T

Main Street Fridays. Ive checked out the line-up, and I must say that Im impressed. And Im particularly

impressed with the number o local acts who are getting some much-deserved exposure.

To kick things o on Thursday, March 17, you can rock out with Greenvilles own Green Vegas. Billed as, One o

the most entertaining shows around, Green Vegas never disappoints. And the 17th just so happens to be St.

Patricks Day, so there will certainly be plenty o green everything. On Friday, the 18th, Greenvilles own Craig

Sorrells Project kicks o Main Street Fridays. A mixture o unk, jazz and general good times, this is a band you

dont want to miss. Im not exaggerating a bit when I say that these are two o my avorite bands around. And to

able to see them outside, back-to-back and FREE is a whole bunch o awesomeness in my book. As the series

goes on, the line-up continues to impress, with groups like Mighty McFly, The Note Ropers, Lionz o Zion, and

plenty more. For a complete schedule, clickhereor Downtown Alive or hereor Main Street Fridays.

Like any city-sanctioned event, there are a ew rules to remember. First o all, no pets and no smoking inside the

actual event area. Those are the biggies. These are amily-riendly events, so there are usually games and stu

up or kids, and a beer truck or us grown olks. A dollar and a valid ID buys you a wristband, and you can purch

tickets or beer or wine. A personal tip rom me to you, though, is to check out Blue Ridge Brewing Company an

Sky at Blue Ridge. For about the same price as the beer truck, you can get some o Blue Ridges crat microbrew

and the ood is amazing. You dont have to deal with tickets or lines (they sell it right out their ront windows), an

theyll even pour it in a plastic cup so you can carry it around in the event area. Now thats convenience.

For those o you looking or a more high-energy xperience, March 18th is going to be an event like Greenville

never seen. The olks that brought you Google on Main have come together again to bring you Xperience: thworlds rst immersive event. The unocial ater-party or Greenvilles TedX conerence, Xperience is open to

public, and promises to be a historical event o epic proportions. Its part laser show, part glow party, and all-

immersive. You ARE the party. Sounds like a good time to me!

Chances are, i youre out and about in Downtown during the month o March, youll see me. I might be walking

down the street, I might be watching a baseball game, I might be jamming out to a band, but I can guarantee yo

Ill be the girl with a smile on my ace.

    Te Ides Are Comig!

    Soothsayer

    Beware the ides o March.

    CAESAR

He is a dreamer; let us leave him

Ignore a dreamer at your own peril. Julius Caesar ignored a dreamer and doom set upon him.

Shakespeare may not have been there in 44 BC, but he sure knew how to turn a phrase.

Beware the ides o March was once a clich and is now only used by history geeks like me

and an odd actor or two who gets to say this line twice in a minute or two.

The bloody coup the revolution to come. Ironic, all these years later, that revolutions are still bloody, dictators still dont see them coming and dreamers are still among us.

It is the dreamer in this play that sets the stage and provides an ominous vision o a uture turning point.

Imagine us without the dreamers and you quickly see that monolithic things stay in control.

    Well, enough o that

Ask Mubarak i he read Julius Caesar lately.

Ask any CEO i some small and insignicant plebeian ever revolutionized the way he used to do things.

Ask any person on the street why they end up cheering the dreamer when they succeed beyond their

    wildest dreams.

When Rick begins to embrace the

struggle in Casablanca he is branded

as a rank sentimentalist, but when he

nods to the band to allow Victor Lazlo

to sing La Marseillaise we all pull orthe dreamer who is struggling to realize

that dream. And he gets the girl
