Dear Friends of the Annunciation, On behalf of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and all of our parishioners, we welcome you with pride and pleasure to our Annual Greek Festival 2016. This is a very special time of the year for our church. Much planning and hard work goes into the preparation of our Greek Festival. We proudly serve the finest ingredients, including 100% real lamb meat, pastries made from scratch, the finest Greek wine served at our bar, and Christo's famous salad dressing on every fresh Greek Salad! Our recipes come from generations of f family traditions and honor. Please take a moment to review our program guide and support our banner and placement sponsors. Don't forget to watch our youth dance group perform folk dances from different parts of Greece on Saturday at 7:30 pm and on Sunday at 1:30 pm. Dance with us every evening to live Greek Music and stop by to purchase some raffle tickets at the raffle table and enter to win some great prizes. We have a small lexicon enclosed in the program guide. We encourage you to use and learn some of our Greek phrases during your stay with us and become Greek for a day! OPA! Enjoy your day! As the Greeks say, "Kali Orexi!" - Enjoy your meal.

Periodic church tours will be announced throughout the festival

Welcome! Orthodoxy – The Best Kept Secret in America

Many people have used this phrase to describe the Eastern Orthodox Chris-tian Faith, which, although fairly new to this country, traces back to Pentecost Sunday of the year 33 AD. Orthodox Christianity reached the shores of the Unit-ed States through the extensive wave of immigrants in the late 1800’s into the 1900’s, coming from traditional Orthodox lands of the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. As the American population welcomed these newcomers with their unique religion and customs, little did they know that the faith tradition of these immigrants had been handed down through the ages, unadulterated and unchanged. Some of the typical questions people ask about the Orthodox Church are: When did your church begin? Who is the head of your church? Isn’t the Ortho-dox Church a break-off church from Roman Catholicism? As stated above, the Orthodox Church goes back to the very beginning of Christianity. There is no earthly head of the Orthodox Church except Christ Himself. From the Orthodox perspective, Rome was one of the five administrative centers of the early Church, whose bishop was considered an equal to all other bishops of the universal Church. In the latter part of the first millennium, the role of the bishop of Rome eventually became inconsistent with this view. This issue, as well as other major dogmatic and liturgical issues, eventually led to the Great Schism of 1054 AD when Rome went in its own direction, while the eastern body of Christianity con-tinued on its original path from which it has not veered. In short, Orthodoxy upholds the entire Holy Tradition of early Christianity, along with the centrality of the role of Holy Scripture in the life of the Church. Ho-ly Tradition includes such things as liturgical practices, church doctrine, hymnog-raphy, iconography, church architecture, monasticism, and spiritual practices such as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Hopefully, you could join us for a guided church tour, where we can elaborate on the meaningful symbolism and tradition-alism found in all Orthodox churches worldwide. Thanks for coming and God bless! +Fr. Anthony Evangelatos Presbyter
