Welcome all to Cullulleraine Music Festival 2019 and thank you for making the effort to join us here and support this event now in its 5th year.

What better way to enjoy a festival than in this unique location that is Lake Cullulleraine, the place I spent many weekend hours as a child with my parents, playing cricket, tennis, football, or just escaping the heat of summer by swimming in the lake, some lasting memories of my childhood.

A generation later camping here with my own wife and children for school holidays with friends, making new friends, and creating great memories amongst our extended group.

This festival is a lifelong journey for me and with the event here at the Lake Cullulleraine each year I get to make and share some lasting memories with friends old and new, musical or not and to share them with you our guests and visitors to this special place which is Cullulleraine.

I would like to thank all of the members of our small committee who share a vision for this event and work all year to get this event up and running, not an easy task in a slightly remote location and over three days.

We are very lucky with the amazing support of our sponsors and volunteers and I thank them for their vital assistance.

I also wish to thank all of the amazing artists and musicians who underpin this awesome event with their incredible individual and collective talent, a gift to us all. Many of the performers are people I have met over the many years attending music festivals, so I feel events like this little festival are crucial to the health and wellbeing of the real Australian music industry and participants. Enjoy the festival.

Chris Rogers, Festival founder & Artistic Director

I am delighted, on behalf of our great committee to thank and welcome you to the 2019 Cullulleraine Music Festival. With sunny days forecast, this Festival is set to be a delight with a program aimed at everyone.

Last year Musical Artistic Director Chris Rogers delivered a great lineup, the bands were all brilliant and the rich mix of other activities created a fabulous, astonishing Festival, no matter what mother nature determined to throw at us…

This year we’ve mixed the iconic, Mark Seymour, Broderick Smith, Bushfire with the marvellous Sal Kimber and the Rollin’ Wheel and a three-day program of live music, the amazing Pitts Family Circus with drumming, singing and artistic workshops to provide an exciting community centred Festival.

Our committee, a team with many talents, has worked quite tirelessly to organise and deliver this mix of music, activity, food and culture and we thank them greatly.

Immerse yourselves with a range of foods, drinks and wares. Relax and take it all in, be glass free, green with your goods and smoke free within our precinct.

We thank the Mildura Rural City Council and all our Sponsors. They have allowed us to shape this event, here at Lake Cullulleraine within the wonderful Lake Cullulleraine Holiday Park.

We hope you enjoy this Festival and above all we hope you have the pleasure of being here, sharing culture, sharing country, sharing…

I acknowledge the First Peoples of the Millewa Mallee, the Ngintait, Nyeri Nyeri, Werigia & Latjie Latjie, on whose lands we gather and their across river neighbours the Maraura and Barkindji; we acknowledge their Elders past and present and celebrate the heritage of a land connected to people now and for millennia.

ARTISTS / PERFORMERS

BLUGURUA twisted tale of Indian, Blues, Celtic, Swing, Jazz, Bluegrass, and adventure.

All bets are off when it comes to what will happen at each show, with the genre and instrumentation changing from one song to the next, but you can expect soaring vocal harmonies, blistering guitar and fiddle, and then ‘instrument guest appearances’ by such as sitar, tabla, tenor banjo, didgeridoo, assorted percussion and of course triple Mandolin!

BRODERICK SMITHAfter 5 decades on the Australian music stage Brod has a long list of credits to his name, including fronting Carson, Broderick Smith’s Big Combo and ARIA Hall of Fame inductees The Dingoes. He has since released 10 records under his own name. He is considered to be a legend by his legion of fans, a consummate performer by many of his contemporaries and an elder statesman by the new guard of fellow musicians.

Broderick releases his brand-new album and first book, both titled Man Out of Time, and will be joined on stage by special guest Richard Tankard on keyboards and backing vocals.

BUSHFIREIn 1994, the ‘BUSHFIRE’ Band was formed in Mildura, home to most of its members, where Steve Curran and his wife Jo joined forces with the Harris, Rogers, Stewart and Tucker families (and many more) to share their love for playing music together. With original folk songs and Irish jigs and reels, the ‘Bushfire’ band is sure to create a lively and upbeat experience for everyone to enjoy.

With a mix of Irish/Australian and English old time dances with a twist, get ready to swing along the old woodshed floor, feel excitement in the hall, choose a partner and meet and greet on the dance floor!

TED TREVASKISTed Trevaskis is from Mildura and has been a singer/guitarist/songwriter for over 50 years, having been a solo artist as well as playing in numerous bands. With two Cd’s and several cassette recordings over the years featuring many original songs as well as covers of mainly country and rock genre,Ted has now turned his talent to a new direction. Over the past 15 or so years building guitars and other musical instruments and to date completed nearly 40 instruments, mainly guitars and cigar box guitars. Some of his instruments will be on display at the Cullulleraine festival. Ted also has a facebook site “Ted Trevaskis Fine Handmade Guitars”.

THE BLUESBERRIESThis Mildura band is made up of Ian McDonald (bass, vocals), Ian Smythe (guitar, vocals, harmonica, slide) and Neil Thomson (drums, vocals). The Bluesberries draw their musical influences to artists including the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Neil Young.

SAL KIMBER AND THE ROLIN’ WHEELHailing from the small, Victorian township of Tallangatta, Sal Kimber grew up surrounded by the beauty and space that today permeates her music. It’s country music, but not quite - it’s infused with soul and there are elements of pop in there too, but mostly it’s real Australian music telling real stories. Backed these days by crack band The Rollin’ Wheel, Kimber’s songwriting is strong and assured, evidenced by a number of awards and countless accolades. And where it all comes to glorious life of course, is on stage, the live setting where Kimber and The Wheel are truly at home, bringing these songs to life in front of the very people – hardworking, honest, you and me – they’re writing about. Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel on stage are a sight indeed, a joyous celebration, fluid and tight and yet also loose and free.

THE COULDRONA well-travelled Mildura based folk trio, having played in the U.K. for the past two years including the well-known Whitby Folk Festival as well as various folk clubs and sessions throughout the UK and Ireland. The Cauldron are also popular and familiar figures on many local folk music stages.

Their primary interest is in traditional music; however, their versatility sees them playing music from other genres, ranging from the familiar to the obscure. They hold the music they play in high regard and their instrumentation and contrasting vocals guarantee that an interesting and entertaining brew will be served up. Instruments include harp, concertina, guitar, harmonica and whistle.

THE PITTS FAMILY CIRCUSNot a musical act but a trully enchanting one none the less.

Two If By Sea gathers together some favourite melodic souvenirs from their musical and geographical travels, drawing on the rich folk music traditions of Scandinavia, Bluegrass, Klezmer and the Celts to present a collection of harmonies that have already delighted audiences around Australia and across the seas.

THE STRING CONTINGENTThis renowned acoustic chamber-folk trio have a unique sound that confidently walks the line between folk, classical, jazz, and bluegrass. In 2018, Australians Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) with Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar) took a road less travelled along the Savannah Way from Cairns to Broome to deepen their experience of Australia and form the basis of their 6th album, From Here or Somewhere Else. - capturing some of the landscape, isolation, history, beauty and peacefulness of the places they visited. Chris and Holly will be launching the album with special guest Rachel Johnston, who was a member of the Australian String Quartet for seven years and has become one of Australia’s best-known and most versatile cellists.
