IT IS A PLEASURE to welcome you tothe third annual Newcastle MusicFestival, which will feature more than
350 performers in 28 events. 2018 willsee a number of innovations in thefestival, including our first performers-in-residence (Sydney’s outstandingOmega Ensemble), and Music on a Plate– a lunchtime fusion of food withcontemporary and world music at iconicNewcastle cafes.
The Newcastle Music Festival has alwaysenjoyed a great relationship withumbrella organisations, and this year weare particularly delighted to welcometwo high-profile organisations – MusicaViva and Opera Australia (in partnershipwith the Newcastle Civic Theatre) –bringing the brilliance of violinist RayChen and the passion of Puccini’sMadame Butterfly to Newcastleaudiences.
Other outstanding guests will includepianists Tamara-Anna Cislowska andSimon Tedeschi, vocalists ElenaXanthoudakis, Michael Lampard, BradCooper and Sharny Russell, guitarists
Andrew Blanch and Ariel Nurhadi, andthe Australian Haydn Ensemble. Thefestival will again celebrate our finestlocal artists, including Sally Walker(flute), Peter Guy (organ), DeborahHumble, Christopher Allan and SueCarson (vocalists), Andrew Chubb(composer) and Scottish fiddle andpiano duo Chris Duncan and CatherineStrutt.
Contemporary music will feature in anumber of festival concerts – FlightHawk and imbi the girl appear inassociation with Lo-Fi, and the Music ona Plate series will feature BeriasMasseque and Vanishing Shapes.
An integral part of the festival has beenthe opportunity for communityinvolvement, and the Festival Choir andFestival Orchestra will again behighlights of the 2018 festival – thelatter joining Newcastle’s Christ ChurchCamerata in the Festival Finale.

THIS YEAR the Newcastle Music Festival is bigger than ever, with a widevariety of musical styles and performers – from classical to contemporary,
from chamber music to opera, and from folk music to jazz. We are immenselygrateful to our many sponsors and supporters, led by Prime 7, and to a numberof superb umbrella organisations, whose partnerships enable us to offer a feastof fine music.
Some exciting innovations in this year’s festival include:
Music on a Plate. Do lunch at the festival, in two events that bring togethergreat contemporary music (Berias Masseque, Vanishing Shapes) and superb foodat iconic cafes – The Umbrian and Momo Wholefood.
Ensemble-in-residence. The Omega Ensemble. Directed by clarinettist DavidRowden, the Omega Ensemble is a leader in the Australian music scene, andmembers of the ensemble will appear in four festival events.
The Art of Fugue. One of Bach’s greatest works, The Art of Fugue demonstrateshis skill and creativity in the most sublime way, and this masterpiece will wend itsway through the festival.
Music and Magic at MRAG. For the first time, the Festival ventures to Maitland,with a concert of jazz and cabaret in the exquisite setting of the MaitlandRegional Art Gallery.
